BU March Decisions?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm in the same boat as far as BU being my only option. I'm getting through this by watching a lot of episodes of "The Office Season 2" on DVD since I have the day off from my excruciatingly painful job today.

Oh, and I still have not recieved a reply from my interviewer. The thing is, I'm a little optimistic because my interviewer was/is so sweet, and it seemed to go well. Plus, I'm in trustworthy mode right now. That could be naive, but oh well.

I think they're still making decisions as we write and rant, so here's to you all!

I think we should try to refrain from contacting our interviewers unless they contact us first.

One interviewer has forwarded an applicant's email request to Dean Witzburg. If you're already accepted I don't think it would hurt you but if you're waitlisted there's no telling how admissions committees takes these sort of actions. Admissions committees are like a huge mystery and I'd rather not do anything that would risk them even being mildly irritated at me.

Clearly, the interviewers that are friendly with their applicants and like going the extra mile have already contacted their applicants or will do so of their own initiative in the next few days. If an interviewer doesn't contact you, he or she probably doesn't want to be bothered. In fact, some med school specifically tell you not to contact your interviewer except for a thank you card.

Don't get me wrong, I'm flipping out on the inside but I don't think contacting interviewers is a good idea especially since the Dean of Admissions is now aware that applicants are bugging their interviewers.

Thanks Thayer...thats some sound advice. Good luck to ya in the application process:luck:

1)Check email
2)Wade through spam folder
3)Check SDN
4)Repeat

AAAARRRRGGGHHHH!😱

Good luck, everyone!

I'm going to go ahead and wholeheartedly disagree here. You are certainly speculating that the one email that was forwarded to witzburg had significance. That interviewer may not even have been on the adcomm. That's a stretch to say that Witzburg is now aware that "applicants are bugging their interviewers." I have had dialog with every interviewer I have had, and they have all been very receptive to have been contacted.

BU is late and they are aware of it. It's a ridiculous comment to assert that your potential success as a waitlist candidate could be impaired by having sent an email to an interviewer. Should you look up their home phone numbers and leave messages breathing heavily into the phone? No. But sending a politely worded email that reasserts your interest in the school (thus the apologetic intrusion) is not threatening your chances.

When did admissions turn into McCarthyism?

I agree, contacting an interviewer should be no big deal. Most tell you to email them if you have any questions.

I'm not emailing my interviewer mostly because I'd rather get an impersonal rejection than one from a real person. I don't want to feel someone cringing as they write the "I'm sorry, but..." Maybe I just want to stay in denial until the inevitable...
Or maybe I'll have to start obsessing about something else when I finally find out... This has become a way of life, it's been going on so long.

hey guys...just wanted to let you know that i just got contacted by my interviewer (this is after I received my acceptance package in the mail)...so im guessing they havent given out the full list to the interviewers yet or some interviewers are just getting around to it...hang in there

I wonder if the rejections are really informal. One person posted that they were rejected... sounds like its not just one large button that we guessed before...

The reject letter was from the dean who I did not interview with. Very form letter..

keep in mind that the population on SDN is very very small. Im sure if someone on here got it there is high likelihood many others have gotten it too but either dont post or dont know about sdn.

Was it by email?

Did you say it was by email? Was your email on the To: line or was it some generic group email.

So why can't they send them all at once? They must know who they're accepting by now! I'm beginning to wonder if BU can't get its act together to get the notifications out...

Just for the record, I was flipping through some old journal entries I had written back in high school, and came across one where I was freaking out about a Math final exam. Ironically, I sounded a lot like I feel right now. Moral of the story: while things might REALLY suck right now, chances are pretty good we're gonna laugh at ourselves in the future. Just food for thought 😉

(My mother is so cute. She brought a bunch of kirspy kreme doughnuts to work today and handed them out to people if they would promise to send positive vibes for me towards the BU admissions office. *sighs* Man I love my parents. lol)

So yeah, hang in there everyone!

BOSTON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

OFFICE OF ADMISSIONS

This email is being sent to inform you that new information regarding your
application to Boston University School of Medicine has been posted to

Dear Mr. xxxxxxxxxx

The Committee on Admissions of Boston University School of Medicine has
completed its review of your application. It is with great regret that I inform
you that we will be unable to offer you a seat in the class entering in the fall
of 2007. This is a disappointment, as much for those who are responsible for
the decision as it may be for you, the candidate who is turned away.

Most of the candidates we are considering this year are qualified to attend
medical school and are likely to make important contributions to our profession
and to society. Sadly, with almost 100 applicants for every seat in the class,
we are forced to deny many exceptional people.

We acknowledge and respect your accomplishments, and recognize that our
inability to offer you an opportunity to complete the admissions process is a
loss for Boston University. Please accept our best wishes for all your future
endeavors.

Sincerely,

Robert A. Witzburg, M.D.
Associate Dean and Director of Admissions

just got my decision from my interviewer AND the BUMEDS thing

freaking waitlisted. 🙁🙁

last year, the waitlist DID NOT MOVE, so i'm not all that hopeful.

DAH!

CONGRATS to the rest of you guys!!

Really sorry to hear sendwich, hopefully theres good movement. Did you get that email too?

Oh, that's a bummer. I remember Dean Witzburg saying that they take most of the people on the waitlist. I don't know tho how that squares with what you know about the waitlist . . . But yeah, keep your chin up! I think you still got a shot.

I feel like if I don't get in, I won't be able to go to medschool next year. Anyone else in the sinking ship?

How do you cope?

I feel the same way. My ship is sinking deeper and deeper by the minute. But don't despair, results are not in yet. Its almost 5 pm, I'm thinking today is not the day so I'm trying to just keep calm at this point. Tomorrow is another day...with good news for all of us I hope!!!

It seems alot of people are starting to hear though. Plus I didnt get my interview invite till almost 630, so its possible they may just be there late trying their best.

On a separate note any changes on status page? Mine still says the same old message.

for those thinking about emailing interviewers- I honestly dont think it'd hurt given BU seems to have a lax policy of letting interviewers notify applicants. and no call from interviewer is not a bad thing-- mine said he had been on vacation recently and been catching up on clinical stuff lately, hence he hadn't had a chance to call.

everyone deep breath. I know what you're all going through- i'm actually a reapplicant who has received scores of waitlists over the past 2 years, so I know all about the anxiety. take it easy and think of the nice weather.

good luck everyone... 🙂

p.s. regarding the BUSM status page, even though my interviewer told me i was in, my status page still reads "under consideration"... so dont read into that too much now.

Hey Sendwich, I've been cheering you on since following this post. You never know what will happen. If you are top of the waitlist thats an excellent position to be in (second to being accepted). Just keep the faith.

my status is something like "we have offered you a place on the waiting list" so maybe some people's statuesesesessese are different?

SUNY Upstate here I come. Came in email and I was deferred candidate

Sorry to hear about the email. 🙁
On the other hand, congrats on SUNY Upstate!

Upstate's a good school. Are you a NY resident? If so, you're going to come out with way less debt than a BU med school grad...

Waitlisted! Why?!!??!??!

Waitlisted! Why?!!??!??!

Honestly, I think a BU waitlist is still optimistic-- Witzburg says he keeps only a very small waitlist every year and many students often get in off of it. Compare that to UPENN or Yale in which the waitlist is literally 200 people and has like 4 ridiculous tiers. at least at BU, you know that your spot on the waitlist really means Witzburg's crew sincerely cares about your app!

Dont lose hope Voice and sendwich!!! 🙂

When did admissions turn into McCarthyism?

Okay...there's really no need to be rude with "ridiculous comment". I was just voicing my opinion and saying I like to play it safe and some schools do tell you not to contact your interviewer.

Perhaps, my view is colored by the fact that my interviewer did not seem like the type who wanted to be bothered with followup emails. If I had a good rapport with my interviewer I would be more inclined to contact him or her.

Sorry to hear it...

It does suck but I wouldn't get ahead of yourself. Remember that BU is one of the biggest med schools in the country... given that, some solid waitlist movement is inevitable.

I'll be pulling for you.

I'm sorry to hear that sendwich, but I think they are using the wait-list different this year because of all the problems last year. Also, BU dropped in the USnews rankings from 28 to 34 or something so there will probably be a few less people that accept their acceptances this year, and I know of two GMS kids that were accepted in January that are probably going to go somewhere else, so there should be some movement on the list.

what is the waitlist movement like?

NOOOOOO!!!!!! This is a travesty. This upsets me. I was and still am pulling for you 100%. I seriously feel like we're all in this together and I wanted all of us to get accepted (screw what the odds are).

But what the posters above are saying is right, you're at the top of the waitlist. You're first in line when spots become available. Don't lose hope, hun! ::hug:: ::hug::

what is the waitlist movement like?

Were you waitlisted, Voice?

Last year there was no waitlist movement because more people chose to come to BUSM than they anticipated. They were over by like 20? 30? people. I talked to Dr. Broitman about that and he said he thought it was because BU received a bump in the US News and Report rankings (only because of an increase in grant funding for BU med school for the year).

I don't think that will happen again this year. Cause usually there is waitlist movement. I'm going to contact my academic advisor and see what I can find what the waitlist movement has been like historically. I'll get back to you guys if I find out anything.

I think it was appropriate, rather than rude, but we are entitled to opinions. This is an extremely anxiety-inducing process and the stoicism it requires for most people to maintain their sanity throughout is phenomenal. When people (as people do on this site) give advice authoritatively, pre-meds eagerly listen. Any insight, be it right or wrong, that may give applicants some sort of foundation, some bearing as to what is going on, they feed off the authority in the tone, rather than the quality of what it conveys.

When you post advice that caters to that fear and anxiety and debilitates applicants to the point where they are terrified to open a dialog with an interviewer (someone with whom they should have established a relationship, someone who should know them well, someone to whom the applicant likely revealed very personal information) I think it is ridiculous. You know no more than they, and to assert that they are endangering themselves by getting up the balls to email an interviewer, you are indeed being ridiculous.

I find it highly offensive that you are accusing me of using fear tactics and fear mongering. If you review all of my previous posts you'll see that I have been nothing but supportive to all of the people on this thread.

It was never my intention to scare anyone and if I did so I apologize. I don't see myself as an authority on interviewers. I'm basing my opinion on what I have experienced and what I have been told by interviewers or admissions staff. And I don't consider myself "authoritative" at all. I'm premed, just like everyone else on the forum. I don't know where you get the idea that I could influence anyone on this board from a position of authority.

Please calm down.

I know we are all tense and wound up about the wait. At the end of the day everyone is entitled to an opinion and lets not try and make peoples day worse than they already might be. I think it ultimately depends on the comfort level that was established with the interviewer. The final consensus I think on this thread is that its ok to email the interviewer if you feel comfortable. It probably won'y have any bearing on the outcomes tho since decisions have already been made.

Jesus, I freaking love posts that start with "I find it highly offensive..." Doesn't matter what comes after that, I'm entertained.

I'm glad you can still be entertained. 😛 Are you waiting to hear from BU?

Did you guys hear about the 2 surgeons in Russia who got into a fist fight during a kidney transplant? The attending had to complete the operation, and one of the surgeons was KOed.
Crazy stuff!

I'm glad you can still be entertained. 😛 Are you waiting to hear from BU?

Yep, and I live in Cambridge. I'm at work right now so I'll be finding out what's in the mail in about an hour.

I live in Allston and I checked my mail before I headed to work late today (I made sure to wait for the mail). Nothing. Hopefully, the BU powers that be have already sent you a nice fat envelope of BU love.

Good luck! :luck: :luck: :luck:

Maybe they're doing this notification thing in alphabetical order. I haven't heard anything yet and my last name starts with S.

What about you guys?

Muchas gracias. I used to live in Allston on Holman St., near the Public Library. I really liked that neighborhood. Good luck to you too! (And thanks for having such a nice sense of humor.) 😀
