BU March Decisions?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
holy mother of snap! You step out for a few hours to have a few drinks with a birthday boy, and you return to find the world has freaking exploded! I guess we'll find out tomorrow. Just like to say good luck everyone, and hope to hear from you guys on the flip side.

c'mon everyone, settle down. remember, no news is still good news. if your acceptance is coming via snail, you don't want any emails. so the later you get the envelope and find out via a fat packet, the better.

and everyone remember that Dean Witzburg told everyone in the wrap up session that BU accepts approximately 300-ish out of 1000 that they interview, so with 1:2 odds, the odds are (relatively) good; although I'm not sure if the goods are odd or not yet.

good luck everyone!

Good luck, my nuckas.

lol thats 1:3 odds bro but im sure you just fatfingered the wrong button.

Either way its still decent odds. You gotta figure at least 1/5 of the people that interviewed had the stench of anxiety rolling off them, another 1/10 spoke in an unprofessional way, 1/5 were just plain ugly and annoying, another 1/20 probably broke down and cried or had a psychotic episode.

I can use math to convince myself that I've been accepted.

1/5 + 1/10 + 1/5 + 1/20 = 55%...we're most of the way there to (virtual) acceptance by this reasoning.

Unfortunately there's also a chance that 1/30 of interviewees had the stench of anxiety rolling off them AND spoke in an unprofessional way AND were just plain ugly and annoying AND broke down and cried or had a psychotic episode, so our odds of gaining acceptance to BU just went down a bit. 🙂

I'm hoping none of this happened to any of the people on this thread. Best of luck to all! :luck: :luck: :luck:

Just like to say that for better or worse, I'm glad we're all freaking out together. This would be so much harder if I didn't have this thread to rant on about my own admissions insecurities. So yeah, one way or another, thanks guys, and again, best of luck to you in the next twelve hours or so.

I'm the exact opposite. I'm checking mine obsessively. click. refresh. click. refresh. click. refresh...

I wish I had your mentality. The thing is even if we are accepted our interview may choose to send an email or nothing at all. The suspense reminds me of some crazy horror movie where you yell at the screen.

joining the anxiety party with you all...good luck to everyone!

anyone tried calling the admissions office to find out their fate or to verify that we really are hearing today?

Patton, why not be the rep for the rest of us and call? i vote for Patton! 😀

I received a phone call this morning from my interviewer... status page still says "Your application is now under consideration by the Committee on Admissions."

Anyone gotten the rejection email yet?

every time someone asks the "who was your interviewer?" question I hold my breath...and then sigh with relief when I hear it wasn't my interviewer.

Anyone else interviewed by Prof. Leeman? Does it mean anything to get a Ph.D. instead of an M.D. as an interviewer?

Haha, same here, one of the reasons why I ask is to relieve the tension. 😀 😀

do we know that rejections will come in an email? i know they did last year but i need confirmation.

So btw, I know i haven't been the most active SDN member, but I'm an okay person and I'll post as soon as i now anything so you all dont have to worry about me messing you with. i'm too nervous right now to mess with people.

Good Luck everyone! I hope you all are myu classmates next year

I can say for certain that it doesn't matter. BU interviews about 1,000 applicants, they ask the faculty (many of which are Ph.D.'s) and physicians associated with BUMC and BUSM to interview applicants. In this way, it spreads out the workload so that each person only has to interview a few candidates instead of like 20.

In fact many of the members of the admissions committee are Ph.D.'s, not M.D.'s though some hold both degrees.

I'm fairly sure I read that the first batch of deciscions contained rejections via email.

Yea they did, deferrals and rejections came by email. I assume it will be the same for rejections and waitlists this time...

I wonder if they're doing it differently (than Jan) this time with acceptance letters mailed out first and then rejection-waitlist emails sent out once the post is out. None of the BU GMS people I know that interviewed at BU have received a rejection-waitlist email and it sounds like no one in this thread has either.

good point. perhaps they are prioritizing getting the acceptances out since it's getting so late in the year.

regardless if one is accepted, waitlisted, or rejected, they said we would hear at the end of the month. So its either today or tomorrow.

You could actually have and advantage having some of the PhD's over some of the MD's as interviewers like Dr. Leeman and Dr. Vaughan. They are on the actual admissions committee, whereas some of the interviewers are only on the interview committee like Dr. Traish. So if you really impressed people on the actual committee MD or PhD then they could have more influence on your decision. I also know that in years past Dr. Leeman has called the people instead of sending the letter. Also I live two blocks from BUMC and I got no letter from BU in the mail today.

Someone earlier mentioned second look being on the 28th of April. What is the second look?

It's when they invited accepted folks back to see the school again. aparently BU likes it if you bring your dog/family/boyfriend

Okay, if they accept around 333 (i know its around 300-ish) out of 1000, then that is 1/3 probability of admission, but its 1:2 ODDS! remember, Pr[X]=n/Total, which is 1/3, while Odds[X]=n/(Total-n) or =Pr(x)/(1-Pr(x)), both of which give you 1/2.

So VoiceofReason, its 1:2 ODDS but 1/3 probability of admission. but then, i'm sure we all got fatfingers in today's obese pandemic world... and I actually study fatfingers/odds/probability/diseaserisk for a living.

[This was a public service announcement, sorry for the interruption; now back to our unified whining for decisions!! :scared: :scared: :scared: ]

the thread has quieted down quite a bit, now im worried

Oh no. I live in Allston-Brighton. If you didn't get a letter and you live 2 blocks away then I doubt there's one waiting for me in my mailbox. They must have sent the letters out late yesterday afternoon.

I just want to know at this point. I've like mentally prepared myself only to find that the day of reckoning has been postponed. Ugh.

I tried calling the office, no one answered though. Anyone else give it a shot?

I think someone posted that they were sent out late yesterday... well at least thats what the interviewer said to the person she called

i'll be the lookout for you guys here in Boston. I'll give a sign with my lamp how the British are coming.... 1:idea: if by phone, 2:idea::idea: if by snail, 👎 if by email. Then i'll ride my internet and hollar on SDN

😀

Do you think it would be acceptable to email the person who interviewed you, if you don't hear any thing by say 3 today? They obviously know the decision.

Perhaps the interviewers that actually sit in on the admissions comittee meetings would know, but would the other interviewers (such as the Ph.d's recruited from affiliated labs/hospitals) be notified of decisions as well?

Edit: If your interviewer seemed open with you during the interview, I don't see why it would be wrong to try and see if they know anything, given you ask politely.

I find this lack of rejections disturbing.

My understanding is that all of the people involved, interviewers and committee members, have a copy of the acceptance list.

i wish i knew more about rejections, but i'm not sure i'd want to look at this page if i just got one. Do we know if ALL the letters were mailed yesterday or just a portion?

Hello everyone,

This is my first post...but I've been lurking on this thread for a while since BU is my first choice. I just called the admissions office about 10 minutes ago and they said that everything will be out by TOMORROW 🙁 .

She also did say that you should watch out for both email and snail mail as you could get an answer via either one (although she didn't specify that ONLY rejections would be send email, etc....she just said to keep an eye on both).

😱 😱 😱 😱 😱

Thanks for calling VivaPortugal, but 👎 on decisions being released tomorrow :scared:

thank you for that info. Anyone get a call from Dr. Caruso?
