This may be a no-brainer, but I made an account to put it out there since I'm having trouble making a decision still. I'd appreciate any input you guys have. Thanks in advance!

BU: ridiculously expensive, and also gave me no money. Boston also has a high COL. Compared match lists w/ RWJMS for what little information I could gain, and didn't see a gaping difference for IM (might be the field I'm interested in, though I don't want to rule out more competitive fields either). Based on that, no debt vs LOTS of debt seems easy.

But RWJMS is US News ranked 80 vs BU's 31, for what that's worth. No one seems to know what RWJMS is, even in NJ (even some Rutgers students!). I don't like research, but recognise it's a necessary evil for competitive residencies, so I'm worried about my opportunities being limited at RWJMS (less prestigious publications). Also, whether the faculty will have the same connections if I decide to pursue a more competitive specialty (there's an opthamologist in my extended family, so there's a lot of pressure to go in that direction) and need mentoring/recommendations.

TL;DR worried that RWJMS doesn't have the opportunity to compensate the money saved

Doesn't make a shred of difference - what was wise of you to do was look at the match lists. That there isn't a major difference is what to take out of that.

On your residency application they will be looking at your rec letters, your STEP scores, AOA status, whether you have research in the field, how much research you have, etc etc.The impact factor of a journal is such a minute factor in all of this, it is nearly irrelevant.

Medical school is 95% what you put into it, and 5% where you go. RWJ may not be a well known name among a random sample of undergraduates at Rutgers, but it certainly is in the medical community, and you will have all the opportunities you need to get a top residency. Seriously, you've won the lottery here.

I'm at RWJMS w/ a deans scholarship, and honestly, i believe i made the right choice. Its true that you have to work a bit harder to find that research position and you might not have the leader in a field teaching your class, but honestly, just because someone is a great researcher does not make them a great teacher. we definitely have some awful teachers, but we also have some fantastic people as well (ie seiden/mulheron/wilson) Ill be at columbia this summer without paying for 4 years of tuition. not a bad deal. you can always PM with any questions

take the money for sure!

RWJMS. Don't get me wrong, BU is a great school, but not 200K (not counting interest) better than RWJMS.
