Hey guys!

Not sure where to post this and I couldn't find a similar thread. I'm deciding between Boston University or University of Florida for medical school and was wondering if anyone had some insight? UF is my state school and would be cheaper, but I've lived in FL my whole life and would love to get out, especially to an amazing city like Boston. Anyone have some pearls of wisdom?

where do u want to be after med school? Would you rather end up in florida (or the southeast in general) or the northeast? or somewhere else?

also, how are your finances? could your parents help you out to alleviate the additional cost of BU?

any particular interest in specific specialties which one of the 2 may have a better program for?

First off, good problem to have!

I grew up in New England and Boston is a great place to spend your early 20's and is an all-around fun city. I live in FL now, specifically Gainesville, and it's pretty boring/depressing here. I'm not sure what the COA difference is, and I'm usually a state-school homer, but you should definitely give BU a hard look. Considering these are going to be some of the most difficult and most trying years of your life, you definitely want to be somewhere you are happy. You will be able to pay off the loans (and I'm sure BU will hook you up with something, being a private school) on a doctor's salary, it's really just a matter of time. UF is on a P/F system I believe, not sure about BU, but that's something to consider.

I guess the next question you really need to ask yourself is where you want to do your residency and practice. Obviously, UF's match list puts a lot of people into FL while I'm assuming BU matches more people into New England. At this point, talk to as many students at both schools as possible but I might lean towards Boston if you understand the financial consequences that come with it. Good luck.

Yes and also I was thinking that Boston Medical Center would offer a different training experience considering its urban location. What do you think?

Do BU students have the opportunity to do anything at MGH, Brigham, Beth Israel, Mt.Auburn etc?

yeah if they do an elective rotation at harvard.

I know they go to Boston Medical Center and shriners, but I am not sure where else.

BMC and VA hospitals are the main rotating hospitals for BU. At the VA, you work with residents from BU and Brigham.
You can do away rotations at MGH, Brigham, etc.
