I am going to SUNY Buffalo this fall and I'm beginning to look for apartments in the buffalo area. I was wondering if anyone has any information for me in terms of nice/popular places to rent in the buffalo area for medical students, and price ranges? Thank you guys.

I currently reside in Buffalo and will be staying here for medical school as well. If you want to live in a nice/safe area, most students stay in Amherst or Williamsville. It's about 5 miles from the South Campus where the medical school is. If you're looking to be closer to the "happening" spots (i.e. bars, popular restaurants, shops, etc) then you'll want to live near Delaware Ave, Elmwood Ave, etc near downtown. Hope that helps.

i just got my acceptance yesterday and am scrambling for an apartment. do you know where most of the M1's live, in terms of apartments/dorms, in Amherst vs. buffalo? I would prefer to live within walking distance, seeing as the big snow will be hard to drive in all winter. any suggestions on apartment complexes in hte area ? what is a reasonable rent for buffalo-- 500-700? any advice would be AWESOME

Definitely don't live in the dorms....i think being in your 20's is a little to old to have RA's and dorm rules to abide by. Buffalo is a little different from other college town in that students don't live in one general area. They are spread out all over. I live in Amherst which is a 5 min drive down one straight road to south campus. Ignore the snow factor....it is so overblown it's ridiculous. Buffalo doesn't even get the most snow out of all the cities in New York State, let alone the country. There really aren't any houses/apartments within walking distance per se. You would have to cross Main St, which isn't fun. You're better off living in Amherst where it's quieter and much safer (safest city in the US if you believe all the statistical analysis). Three of us pay $355 a piece for a 2500 sq ft, 3 bedroom/3 bath apartment. Buffalo is CHEAP in terms of cost of living. Hello,

I currently reside in Buffalo and finding an apartment is very easy. www.buffalo.com is an excellent site. Go into the classifieds section and not the apartment.com section. Driving around will also enable you to find a great deal. Williamsville and Amherst are great places to live...but are also the most expensive. You can easily find a place in Cheektowaga (where Cheektowaga borders williamsiville) for an awesome deal. Downtown Buffalo is also very nice as long as you stay in North Buffalo area (do not venture into west, south or east Buffalo). Hope that helps...expect to pay 350-450 for a 1 bdrm and 500-550 for a two. Make sure heat is included (cold winter and high heating bills). I actually live in an area where three apartments are opening. Two minutes from south, five from north. 550 for two bdrm heat included. Contact me for more info.

HI. I'll be coming to UB in the fall too! and I was wondering if going to the June Housing event was worth it? Thanks for all the tips on which areas to live/avoid. 😳

The area which most college students reside is University Hieghts(right off main on south campus), its typically a mixture of long islanders and minorities. The majority of upstate new yorkers live in the dorms/apartments. The apartments at UB are beautiful but tend to be a bit pricey. I would highly advise medical students to consider the apartments due their security and clean sorroundings plus the apartments include all utilities which tends to be a hassle when living off campus.

As a native Buffalonian and someone who is currently attending UB Med...

Amherst and Williamsville are nice, but there really isn't much going on out there. You will be close to campus, but often the people who live there are the one's who are unhappy with Buffalo because they never actually go into the city to do anything. However, this area is very safe, close to south campus, and there are a large number of med students who live here.

University Heights is a bit rundown and I don't think too many med students live there. It is mostly undergrads and there has been a lot of cracking down on the area lately for noise, garbage, etc.

My personal preference would be to live somewhere in the Elmwood/Bidwell area, Allentown, or North Buffalo. These areas offer the most in terms of restaurants, shops, bars, parks, etc. I would say this is where you will find the largest percentage of 20-something med school-age people in the area.

Apartments are pretty affordable almost anywhere in Buffalo, so it is more a matter of personal choice.

Check out the classified adds at www.artvoice.com for more apartment listings.

The above is obviously just my opinion. Amherst, etc. are nice places to live, but I tend to think the city offers a better experience than living out in the burbs.
