GEP here chiming in on the waterproofs/wellies. We have used them once for an afternoon with pigs (that was pretty early on in the first semester) and we used our wellies and boiler suits twice when we had horse handling and intro to the clinical exam of the horses. So, you will need them even if you only use them a couple times. But, I used them all while I was doing my EMS over Christmas. SoBe is right about the wellies. They don't check that they are steel capped so you can get away using those without but I would at least get some with reinforced toes for working around large animals (I had a sow run right across my foot as she fled in panic from a roll of hay).

Yeah, good point about EMS..you would definitely want them by Christmas break in the 5yr. Thing is, so many students sell theirs, you can get them on the major cheap rather than paying top dollar at Hewat's.

I have used mine a LOT, but not for school - taking the dogs out back in the garden during all of the snow and to the park after when it's been really muddy. But, you can get some pretty polka dot ones for that kind of stuff

FutureVet - go for it. They are hot, hot. I will just drool on yours, if that's ok.:meanie:

Thanks guys! (Studied my ***** off for that hellish test - I think my ochem prof is a sadist).

Flyhi & futurevet - I really like those boots! If I was still riding, I would definitely be ordering those or the ones that SoBeVet posted - I didn't even know Muck boots made tall riding boots. Wish I had known that a few years ago - I destroyed my lesser quality tall boot SOOOO fast.

Hmmm, looks like I have some boot shopping ahead of me😀

PS - I love reading your blogs guys - although I am pretty far behind. Part of my anal nature makes me read them in chronological order, so I am not very far along yet 😳 Guess I could stop visiting SDN and have more time, but we all know that is never going to happen!

I have to read them chronologically too! And I get sucked in and have to finish it. But then I'm sad when I caught up to the present and there are only a one or two new entries to read!

Hey so question, I am thinking about visiting edinburgh and I know that if u contact the admissions department they can set u up with a tour but I was wondering if they can do tours on the weekend or if it is only on weekdays? Also is there a good place to stay in the area around the school? Thanks!

Current students: what's your impression of the class size? I was flipping through VMSAR today and saw there are 171 students at Edinburgh, and the average for a US school is 80-140 (and people comment on OSU feeling big). Do you have humungous lecture halls?

Info gathered from my visit... There are several great hostels in downtown Edinburgh. The bus line runs everywhere so it doesn't really matter where you stay, but since you're trying to get out to Easter Bush it might be easy to find one near that bus route. The area around Holyrood Park is gorgeous!!!

I showed up unannounced and got an impromptu tour from a staff member. It was fun being able to walk around and see the campus (although now they've moved it) without the pressure of being with an official tour group. I would assume you could do that on a weekend too?

Have fun on your visit! Oh, and make sure to take the train to visit Glasgow too 🙂 Even if you're not applying to their vet school, the city is lovely and of a very different character than Edinburgh. (Like comparing Chicago to Minneapolis). There's a really good Tapas restaurant downtown if you're in the mood for Spanish food. Lots of authentic Indian food in Scotland too (strangely, imo).

I actually just sent Victoria Doggett an e-mail today about visiting! My dad and I are heading over there in a few weeks to check out the school. I don't know about the weekend tours but when I visited Edinburgh last year I stayed at the Armadillo Guesthouse, which is relatively inexpensive and conveniently located to the City Centre. When my parents came to vist (I was in England for the year) we stayed in some nice self-catered accommodations along the Firth that had good bus access and was apparently a good deal (but I wasn't paying that time, so...😀)

Lots of authentic Indian food in Scotland too (strangely, imo).
When I visited a friend in Glasgow, she told me that the city had been named "Curry Capitol of the UK." Go figure.

Do you have humungous lecture halls?
I was wondering about this as well. They mentioned that the GEP first year is only about 60, but it seems like the next few years would be a huge adjustment.

Unfortunately guys, I will not be seeing you next semester in Edinburgh. I have decided to go to my instate school for many reasons, but mainly because of the money I am saving and the equally good education I will be getting there. I wish I could have my adventure in Scotland, but I guess that will have to wait for another time. I wish you guys the best of luck and I know you will have a blast..

It is really kind of sad...I feel like I am saying goodbye to friends even though I have not met most of you nor really know any of you outside of your SDN opinions.

Aw that is bittersweet for sure! Good luck though, any school will prove to be an adventure, and an amazing one at that!

I still don't know where I am headed yet, I can't imagine making a decision... but I do very much love Edinburgh, and it is tied for my number one choice.
I wish I could visit so I may be persuaded a bit more...

I would think the tours are just during the week, but not sure. Yes, there are plenty of places to stay relatively close to the school...not a problem. Once you schedule, let us know and we can point you in the right direction. You may want to also ask admissions, as they may have relationships with some places for a discount.

Good Luck!

Congrats on your decision, I know I probably would have made the same decision too if I were in that situation.

If you are in Scotland over the next 4 years fee free to visit!

Just was reading the thread about backpacks vs mess bags and saw that Flyhi, you wrote that no one uses laptops for lecture...is this true for GEP as well? I have been debating about using a program like Onenote or Evernote...but if it is not practical to take notes with your laptop, maybe I wont even bother with that.

Oh I will definately be going. I had planned a 3 week trip for last summer, it got bumped to this summer and then when I thought there was a good chance I was going over for school I canceled it...It is now back on for next summer 😀

Hiya everybody! :hello:

I've been a little bit of a lurker on this thread for awhile... I've been accepted into the GED 4 year program too! Still waiting to hear back from some other schools. Also very hesitant to accept b/c I've still got tons left to do on my MS degree and promised to finish this before I went to vet school... AAAALSO my brother's wedding is Aug 27th and being the best man, it'll be hard sneaking out of that one.... :ninja:

But the current Dick students have been great! Extremely informative, helpful, etc.! I love it! Thank you and hopefully we'll be future class-mates with the rest of the C/O 2015 😀

JBJay - Your brother is not by chance marrying a girl who is going to Edinburgh? Very slim chance, but there is a girl on the FB group that is going to Dick Vet and coming back that weekend (pretty sure) for her own wedding!

Good luck with your other schools!!!

Edit: bad spelling

What a koinkadink on the wedding dates! He IS marrying a girl, but not an Edinburgh girl... But still, it's a small world, huh?

Thank you for the good wishes! This waiting is horrible!!! Envious for all who already made up their minds and are finally putting this whole process behind them.

So I am probably the most paranoid person out there but are you guys doing anything to get ready to go??? I know its like six months away or smthin but I cant help but feel im forgetting things. Especially the housing situation I know most people wait and do it then but it makes me paranoid that I will arrive with my dogs and then have no where to live ahhh 🙁

The only thing I can cross off my list is submitting my FAFSA! Now I just have to wait to get the results of that in order to request a GradPLUS loan, then I can send in my financial guarantee and my deposit, and once the school gets that then I will get a CAS and then I can apply for my visa! I feel like there is a lot to do but it has to be taken one step at a time because each thing on the list depends on the item before it being completed.

As far as housing goes, I just look around websites for fun to get a feel for what is out there. I'm definitely going to wait until I get over there to find something. I am starting to think about moving though because I need to sell most of my belongings (including my car!) in order to have as much money as possible to get things set up! I would really like to find out what I need to do for EMS so I can determine when to quit my job and know when to try to sell my car... sooooo much to think about. Sorry if my rambling is overwhelming!

A few people in the GEP bring their laptops and take notes but not many (maybe 4 out of 60). The instructors provide you with their notes and it is easier to just write on those, in my opinion. But, whatever works best for you is what you should do.

Current students: what's your impression of the class size? I was flipping through VMSAR today and saw there are 171 students at Edinburgh, and the average for a US school is 80-140 (and people comment on OSU feeling big). Do you have humungous lecture halls?

Yes, there are 60 of us integrating with what are now the second years. We have a few classes with them now already because we are catching up with them on animal body and AWHAFS lectures. The class size is around 170 (someone correct me if I'm wrong) so the lectures are in pretty big lecture theatres. But, for AHWAFS and clinical skills practicals they split us into smaller groups. I don't such a big class will be a problem.

Yeah, I think the class sizes are fine. Even in our intimate group of 61 right now we are further broke up into 4 groups for practicals, labs, etc. So next year, we will be joining 120 or so students but I imagine the only time that we will be the whole group is in lectures. Professors are more than available for questions, office hours, etc so I wouldn't let the big size scare you too much!

Do you print the notes off beforehand from eevec?

Initiate panic mode. I have been hearing much talk of FAFSA, and though I am a complete idiot when it comes to this loan stuff... I am starting to worry that I was meant to do something with this recently. I don't know for certain where I am going yet (Edinburgh is a major possibility). But I am going to be needing max loans. I still have time to take care of all this, right? All I need is a simple yes to ease my mind. I think I may try and hire a financial adviser of some sorts, though, maybe I should contact the schools, they're generally free...

In a word, yes! 🙂 I know a lot of schools had priority filing deadlines (mine was always March 1st for undergrad) but I think that was to get the best grants and so that really doesn't apply to us for professional school. But I think you can file your FAFSA and list all of the schools you are thinking of going to so that you get considered for loans for each of your programs. Then you only commit to one in the end obviously. I THINK that is how it works anyway. I'm very spoiled so I always had my dad do my taxes and FAFSA in undergrad, but this time he only did my taxes and then we did the FAFSA together and it was a total breeze. Only took about 15 minutes I would say, but do have your tax info handy when you get ready to fill it out.

thanks ckd!
I was spoiled too with undergrad, all I know about it is that I know pay a butt load each month... they could bill me more by accident and I would have no way of knowing it.
I wish I could say it would be a breeze for me to go over things with my dad, but he makes this sort of thing a tedious and unmanageable process. It will probably take us all day... so I am looking forward to that.

Do you print the notes off beforehand from eevec?

At the beginning of the year we paid £35 for lecture notes. They are given to you in a packet at the start of each new section of a module. Some instructors are better than others about the organization of their notes. Some write them out like they came from a text book, others just list bullet points and still others print out their Power Point slides. Sometimes as well they will put their Power Point presentations on EEVeC along with the notes in your packet. Better still is one professor who not ony puts his slides up but also has an audio of the whole lecture to go along with the presentation. It's hit or miss on who is more on top of things but it works for the most part. You quickly figure out who is good and who is not. For the latter I just record the lecture and type up my notes later.

I think i'm the only one in the 5 year program who uses a laptop. I also only bring it for a certain lecturer since she hand-writes her lecture on the whiteboard. I use my laptop for her since I can type without getting writers cramp. She frequently does diagrams in her lectures so I do have to switch to the paper notes to copy those down, so its a little fiddly. All the other lectures I just make amendments to the provided notes as they are exactly what the lecturer is covering.

Do you print the notes off beforehand from eevec?

We get the notes provided, but as DogTyred said some are just a few pages of typed text and others are the printed out powerpoint slides. Since the powerpoints are usually posted on Eevec you could print them out and one of my friends does.

Personally i'm a little peeved about paying £35 for notes when I could have printed them off myself. Especially since they don't usually get them to you early. It would be nice if they gave you the whole pack at the beginning of the year and not little bundles throughout. For example we just finished exams and start our new semester on Wed. Personally I would like to look over some of the notes but we don't have the printed ones yet; we'll get them on Wed in class. I could print them off now since they are on Eevec now, but then I would be paying for them twice.

The lecture hall isn't huge; the 5 years are in Cairns (which you won't be). I'll give you an idea. There is an aisle that runs up the middle, with 5 seats on each side with a shared desk in front of the seats. There isn't alot of room, imagine being on a plane...

I've talked to some of the 3rd years about the lecture theaters that we will be in next year and they describe them as about the same but without the windows we currently have.

Hiya everybody!!

I know this questions been brought up before in other threads

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=385461

(and maybe even this one but I couldn't find it) but I'm curious how you all feel about the differences between the DVM and the BVSc. I know that it's only a title, but do you worry that clients / others might judge without that "doctorate" attached to things (especially if practicing in the US)? And what about the ability to call yourself "Dr. ________"?

And if any of you are in the same shoes as I am, what do you tell your worried mother that thinks you won't be respected with "just a BVSc", even if its from a world-renowned University like Edinburgh?

Ugh! And what about all the BVMs out there from unaccredited Universities cramping our style??:barf:

Not worried about it at all, really. It's just letters, afterall. If you're worried about it, think of it this way, there's more letters in BVM&S. And, if you practice in the States you can call yourself Dr. You said it yourself, The University of Edinburgh is world renowned. Go for the education, not what you get to put behind your name in the end.

If you are still worried about it, this might make you feel better. I did extensive research on this, talking to people other than admissions and professors from Edinburgh and students who go there/plan on going there (no offense to you guys of course) I wanted to get a non bias answer. The admissions of my in state school that I was considering going to along with Edinburgh told me that University of Edinburgh was a wonderful school and they had a wonderful program, and that VMRCVM doesn't think twice about the BVSc or any other non DVM degree when they are hiring faculty as long as they have the credentials they are looking for. She also said that it is the same everywhere else, no one cares what the Degree's letters are, just that you have some. For someone who wanted me to pick their school and to still say going over there would give me an awesome education says something. I also talked to a resident who is from Australia to see if she had any problems getting her residency without a DVM and she said she had no problem at all and got her first choice. Although I ended up deciding to go with my instate, it had nothing to do with not getting a "DVM", mostly money 🙁

Copy, paste, FWD: MOM READ THIS AND QUIT WORRYING!!!! 😡

👍 Thank ya!!

I agree, which letters you have don't mean much, they all mean Dr. ___ once back in North America.

One thing I learned semi-recently, unless you are a medical doctor or a PhD here you don't get the Doctor title.

I would say for the most part, it does not matter, but it might. You will get some other fancy letters behind your name 'MRCVS'...'Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons'. My opinion only, but I would think it MAY affect you if you want to own your own practice (in the US, anyways) someday and hang your sign in the window. I know many vet students, let alone the layperson, who do not know what the heck a BVM&S is.... My concern with this was on the marketing side of things and not being a DVM. It's like being a DO instead of an MD...there is only a small percentage of the public that understands and knows the difference.

Just my .01

Good Luck!!

Bumping this thread up, since it looks like I might be joining y'all this year for the 5-year program, unless I magically get off a waitlist at my top choice here in the states!

I know we're all sort of in a holding pattern until we get a little more info, but I spoke to Victoria this week and she said we'd get student mentors in the next few weeks. Woohoo!

wow, you think you are finally coming over?? are you waitlisted at tufts again? Good Luck!

What type or recorder to you use? Does it work from farther up in the lecture theatre? Do most profs allow you to record lectures?

Yup, and Purdue, so we'll see! I'll keep you posted - I'm coming over in May for a visit/vacay anyways, so maybe I'll see you then!

I just use my iPhone and it does fine from the back row of the smaller lecture theatre and about the middle of the large ones. Most professors use microphones (on days when the batteries aren't shot) so that helps. Also, none of the professors tell you that you can't do it.

I got an e-mail from Victoria today giving me the name of my student mentor 🙂

Well... just got a rejection from my in-state school... looks like it is confirmed that I will be joining y'all in Scotland! Im upset about the rejection, but not as much as I thought I would just because I think I am super excited about having the opportunity to go to the University of Edinburgh (even if it is going to cost 2X as much haha). Anyway I look forward to meeting y'all in a few short months

Is your in-state school Florida? I like to think my rejection from there was a blessing in disguise 🙂 Even though my SO and pup are still there. It is truly a fantastic school and braving my first winter over here wasn't too horrible! Congrats on getting in here 👍 We did rectal exams today and I felt the ovaries! Just reminds me how lucky I am to be in vet school, and an amazing one at that!

I second that! Not many vet schools allow you to even touch an animal first year, let alone rectally palpate cows. So excited for Friday, now!

Aw, thanks FinleyMonkey and DogTyred. That is very reassuring. Yes, Florida was my in-state, I graduated from U of Florida so I always thought I wanted to go there for vet school, but like you said I'm hoping it is a blessing in disguise. I LOVED everything I heard about Edinburgh (the school and the city) at the reception, it seems like a truly fantastic program. It is just scary, pickin up and moving (and leaving my horse) but I do think it just wasn't meant to be with Fl. Y'all are a great help and thank you for making me feel better. I am sure I will have more questions shortly, now it feels like I have so much to do to get ready!

I went to UF for undergrad and then a Master's, so essentially I had been in Gainesville since 2004, and LOVED it and wouldn't have minded staying there for vet school but the opportunity (once you get over the instate vs out of state/country tuition) to go somewhere else is amazing. I even thought of reapplying and not taking the opportunity here so I could stay there (but they are pretty fickle so I would have never actually chanced it). But at the end of the day, it is so different here; different place, different opportunities. I went back for Christmas to do some EMS at the dairy unit and worked with one of the LA vets from UF who was REALLY impressed that I went here and went on to say how this is such a great school, wow you are really lucky to have gotten in there, etc. So at the end of the day, I'm really glad I made the leap of faith to come here. Ahh okay back to studying I go.

Haha oh, that is great! Now I am pretty excited. There is not much I can really do until after I send in my deposit correct? I have filled out my FAFSA and I am working on getting some experience with sheep (that was one of my conditions) but other than that, is there much I can do or do I kind of have to wait until I have an unconditional offer? It is a bit overwhelming with all the things that need to be done, I sure don't want to procrastinate!

Congrats Knockout! I know how you feel with IS, if I had gotten in, I would have had to go financially, but luckily I don't have to worry about that!

As for things to do, you can email Kay about EMS if you want before getting your unconditional offer. There is a FB page too if you are interested. The link is on the previous page I think.

Thanks Packen! I will get on top of that 🙂 I'm pretty excited. I am in the 5 year program, so I'm sure some things will be different for us, but I do remember them saying we could contact Kay anytime about EMS.

There's a FB group for Dick Vet Freshers for 2011, too. I'm also accepted to the 5-year program, and am tentatively planning on going based on whether my waitlists move, along with my cats and possibly boyfriend, although thinking about what to do with my horse for 5 years makes me want to cry. Ignoring that problem. Knockout we should be friends if we're both going! 😀

I am also in the five year program, and slightly cheated and joined the GEP program facebook page because well everyone is paranoid and it helps to answer some questions. There seems to be a few of us on it.

Yeah, don't listen to anyone when they tell you to buy your waterproofs and wellies right away cause you don't need them (unless you are GEP...may be diff't). Pig farm is after Christmas break.

If I was going to treat myself to some boots for around here, I would get these: http://www.smartpakequine.com/Produ...Dublin+River+Boot-_-NA&cm_vc=UpSell#pnlMiddle

I've heard they are awesome and I want some. Congrats on the O-chem!!

In response to this, what I REALLY want is a pair of these: http://www.smartpakequine.com/ProductClass.aspx?productclassid=8767&cm_vc=Search

But they'd never see a farm, that's for da*n sure! I have a pair of knee-high Mudruckers that I absolutely adore for barn work in the winter/wet springtime, which will be coming over with me.
