This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It is rare that I curse a winter storm (I might be the only person left here on the east coast who loves them). :xf:

You are not the only one...I love snow and I really don't see myself getting sick of it anytime soon as long as I dont move to Antarctica...that being said, I am nervous for my nonrefundable flight tickets.:xf:

Packen: yay the more the merrier!

This weather might make for an interesting drive. I'm staying in NJ with my bf and taking NJTransit into the city. I would love to stay for dinner, but its chinese new year and Im going back to celebrate with his family (i'm white and he's chinese). But it might be a great time to check out china town and see their celebrations! I've been up to this area a lot of times and I'll probably be walking from Grand Central Station up to times square and over to the cornell club if anyone wants to join me.

BClove: I'm planning on wearing light brown/tan pants and vest with a light blue collard shirt that i wore to VM.

I hope to hear soon about the weather and if there will be any change in plans!

Ah! That email I just got from Brendan was not exactly encouraging! I am hoping the reception is still going to happen, but everyone definitely be safe travelling.

I know, right?! Fingers crossed. I feel bad for those stuck in Edinburgh that can't get here... but hopefully it's not as bad as they're predicting. Stupid ice. I will be so upset if its canceled. Those of us in NYC should still have a celebration, faculty or no faculty!

Boooo! Brendan and Neil Hudson ARE the show! They were fabulous. Really hope it works out for you guys. Have fun!!!

My flight to newark for tomorrow was cancelled 🙁 im still going to try and see if I can work something out (there was a stop in philly and the flight from philly to newark was cancelled) stupid ice! Seriously, I live in pittsburgh and its just raining (which is odd considering its pittsburgh) how much worse can new york be? It probably can be worse im just upset that I may not be able to go

You can totally get to nyc from philly, I think its super easy. Of course I say that because I live outside philly and just drive in. But I know there are trains from 30th street station, its just a matter of getting there from the airport. But let me know if you have questions regarding the area. Not that I can be of too much help but I can try.

You can still get there! There are trains going from philly to NYC. it might be a bit of a shuffle from the philly airport to the 30th st train station, but you can take SEPTA from 30th st to the trenton transit center and then NJtransit straight into NY penn station. Here is the schedule for the 3rd:

Hope it helps and I hope you can get there!

southjerseybell is much more helpful than I! haha thanks for filling in the details I could not.

Just got an email though, hopes are high. I am wearing my pajamas properly tonight! 😀

All systems go for the reception!

Safe travels everyone, can't wait to meet people tomorrow!

Woops! I didn't see you had the same thing up :/

I'm so glad that everything is going as planned. I hope everyone can still make it!!

Yes, that is a relief for sure. I am excited too!

I'm trying to break my lurking streak. 🙂
I too will be attending the NY Reception and was wondering if you guys know what the dress code is? I guess we just follow the Cornell House smart casual dress code??

I was at last year's, and outfits ranged from jeans with a nice top to full suits. Some of the professors were wearing jeans as well. I went with nice black pants and a button down top. Simple without being too casual. Be comfortable while also staying within business casual guidelines.

thoughts on a sweater dress with tights and tall boots (thinking equestrian style boots )? I cannot dress myself. I assume this will be fine, but naturally, I panic. Alternative is my suit, I hate my monkey suit.

Haha I hate my monkey suit too, I think im going to be wearing nice black pants with a sweater, I think that will be fine. My mom keeps telling my that I should wear something nicer but oh well. So excited!

You should be fine in that! Just remember that it's liable to be COLD and windy in the city, and depending on your method of transport, you'll want comfy shoes. We took the train in and walked, and I wore flats and shoved heels in my purse to put on when I got there. You could always do suit pants with a sweater on top!
Also I can't wear dresses without feeling awkward, so I'm biased. 🙄 My rule of thumb is "would I wear this out to dinner with my boyfriend's family/my grandparents?" As long as the answer is yes you'll be ok. 😀

Ah, yes good way of thinking about it. I do realize it will be cold, I plan on wearing snow boots and changing when I get there into something more appropriate. I have a few things to go through and try on, thanks for the help!

How was it, how was it????? :hello:

It didn't happen yet! Well the SF did, but NYC is tomorrow! So pumped 😀

I am also going to be wearing comfy shoes and then changing. We are coming in from Penn Station, but might spurge for a can depending on how cold/ windy it is.

I can't do dinner tomorrow 🙁 Parents want us to have dinner with them, since we leave on Friday.

Can't wait to see everyone, probably going to wear grey pants and black shirt. I have super curly hair.

Oh and super CONGRATS to you BClove!! I lurk on the vmrcvm thread, but typing on my phone is a pain so only responding to one thread.

The SF reception was very nice! If I wasn't already sold on Edinburgh, they would have sold me! I am sure that I want to go there and I can't wait to get started. Professor Corcoran actually remembered me from the tour he gave me a few weeks ago which was nice. Dr Hudson and Victoria Doggett were really nice and helpful as well. It was nice to finally meet the person I have been e-mailing a million questions too! Since I have done so much online research and talking to you current students online I didn't hear much information I didn't already know but it was good for my mom to go and hear about the program and meet the staff. And, the weather was very nice. 🙂 Good luck to all those traveling to NYC!

It is nice that everyone is saying what they're wearing tomorrow (of which I still have no idea), but is it bad that I will really probably only know who you are when you tell me what your avatar is on SDN? I can't keep everyone's outfits straight, but I have been looking at your avatars for a while now lol.

and thanks Packen, I am really counting on tomorrow to complete all my information so I can start figuring out where the heck I want to go. 🙂

Lol, lets all make name tags that include our name as well as SDN names and pics!! 😉 That way we will all be able to identify each other and connect them to our SDN.

I will also be walking in sneakers to the club and then switching into heels once I'm there. (giant purse FTW) Can't wait to see you all there!

(And woo for the one San Fran rep on SDN!)

(And woo for the one San Fran rep on SDN!)

Fine, fine! I'll check in from SF! 🙂 I'm still here being touristy with my mom but I had to check in here to see what the news on NY was. I'm on my phone so I won't write a novel but I will agree with everyone that the reception was excellent. Like zap said, there wasn't much information that was new to me but it was great to have my mom hear about the program from someone other than me (also, I'm sorry I didn't get to meet you zap!). It was also comforting to meet the person who has been on the other end of all the emails in this process. Overall, I loved it and my mom now understands that this is an opportunity that is impossible to turn down! 🙂

Another SF check in, same as everyone if you have researched the school its mostly info you know. They do give you a little leaflet thing on which buses go all the way and the areas they go through, which you can probably find on the bus website but was nice to see on one page. Also the professors are really enthusiastic and fun so it made you happier knowing how crazy dedicated they are to the school and program. Although no one was scottish, which made me laugh a little- my mum was the only one with a scottish accent.

I will be at the reception. I am staying the week. My friend is coming with me to the reception and we'll probably be getting some dinner afterward. I'd be happy if you came! I have a feeling a quite a few of us will want to do some dinner afterward.

I didnt even put the two together that you were who I met today and we had talked about dinner on here, lol oh well. We can get dinner when we are in Edinburgh! (if i got there 🙂 )

This thread almost fell off the main page! We can't let that happen! 😛 I got home from San Francisco last night and I just watched the DVD that came in the reception portfolio... exciting stuff! Some of it is kind of outdated by talking about Summerhall and whatnot but it's still really nice to see more visuals of the campus and the city. 🙂 So how did everything in New York go? Has anyone been swayed by the info session?

This thread almost fell off the main page!

I was literally just thinking this earlier today! The reception was so lovely, great food, and great information. Met some other SDNers which is always cool, and although I cannot say I am 100% swayed, they definitely did a great job in getting all the information out there for us to digest. I still have an interview left and some thinking to do... but I am very much leaning towards the UK one way or the other (Edinburgh vs. London).

Yeah, I'm sorry that I didn't get to meet any SDNers at the reception but we should all meet up before school when we are in Edinburgh!

I thought it was wonderful as well and it was nice to put some faces to the names on here. I would say it has pretty much swayed me as far as which UK school to go to (RVC is my other choice) if I choose to study abroad.

The reception was great and it was really nice to meet some others on this board. It didn't really sway my decision too much since I already decided to accept Edinburgh's offer, 🙂 but it definitely helped me feel much better about my decision!!

As someone who is really interested in research, I feel this school can really offer some great opportunities. I am so excited!!!!

Although no one was scottish, which made me laugh a little- my mum was the only one with a scottish accent.

Ooooh that was your mom?! That actually made my day because she was the only Scottish accent I got to hear at the reception 😛

Same here! Edinburgh has been my first choice for a while and I'm definitely accepting. Is it too early to make us a Facebook group for Dick Vet GEP 2015?? 😳

haha oh we'll have plenty of time for that in Edinburgh. Like it's been mentioned before, us SDNers should get together in Edinburgh prior to school starting.

AGREED! It was my top choice and the reception helped finalize that decision. I'm so excited!! Now I've got to worry about housing.

I am seriously considering living in the dorms for the first few weeks before all the other students arrive and spending that time to look for housing. From what I read from current students, moving over during the festival and trying to find pet friendly housing might be too much, and not possible. I figure once I get settled, then have my pup sent over. As it is now, I am having a hard enough time convincing hubby to watch her for that 5-6 weeks - long story, but she and his little dog do not get along and it stresses him out to have them together by himself.

I made a group! Search for "Dick Vet GEP 2015" on Facebook. I'm the only one in it so it's kind of lonely so far. 😳 There's also a "Dick Vet Freshers 2011!" group that I requested to join. 😀

I hear you on the dog thing. My poor dog probably feels like an orphan being shuffled from one household to another due to various issues (ie bf's apartment complex less than amused with an 85 pound dog when their policy is 25 lbs and under... whoops). So if your hubby is too stressed maybe look for another temp home for your pup; one of my old co-workers has mine now (she is a saint). Those first 5 weeks are grueling, and combined with, oh you know, moving to a different country, can get a little stressful! Don't fret though, it can be done if unavoidable. Good luck!

I agree, I am seriously considering doing that as well. I think it would be much better to get to know everyone and get settled in and find roomies (insert excited face).

I am in the same boat as far as dogs go. I have no desire to leave my dogs behind for any moment because I do extensive training with my dogs, and unfortunately the people who could watch them (including my parents) are totally clueless on training (and very stubborn to learn new things) and I have a very impressionable puppy right now that would just gobble up all the bad opportunities he will be allowed to have. The thought of having to do damage control with him when he gets here gives me a headache.🙁

Facebook won't let me know it exists...says there is no such thing. I even just typed in Dick Vet and went through them all by hand (figuratively). It did this to me for another group a friend made too and I've checked my settings and can't figure it out. I think it has something to do with the new facebook

*bump* also, question, if we firm our offer but still have to meet conditions can we start the loan process/ housingprocess? Or do we have to wait until our conditions are met?

I would definitely ask Victoria that question. I would think you have to wait to get the official letter she spoke about, but I could be wrong.

BTW, I am seriously disappointed that none of the current students mentioned that you and the school were TV stars 😛 (Sincere apologies if you did mention it and I forgot!) I just watched about 5 min of an episode (have to get to class soon) but started hysterically laughing (ppl in library gave me nasty looks) when they stuck the chameleon in the ziploc bag to anesthetize it! I don't have much experience with exotics - but for some reason watching them stuff that lizard into the bag just made me crack up.

A bit OT... but it I figured it might be good to get a discussion going, maybe throw ideas around for EMS hours prior to going over.

I am going to of course contact the woman in charge of it (Kay Aitchison), but thought perhaps if anyone here had any ideas we could chat about it. I know we are getting mentors and stuff who we can discuss this with, but I figured here would be a good place to bounce ideas off one another (current students feel free to throw some advice out too - I know you are probably way busy but you guys are wicked helpful, so thanks in advance)!

Maybe this was discussed already too, I am not sure, anyway... I am rambling... just been thinking a bit about it since the reception!

Futurevet- I am not really sure what I am going to do about EMS yet. I think my first step will be to email the Dick Vet contact and see which ones I may already get credit for. Also I am hoping that I can combine some bovine EMS with my suggested experience.

Ok, another off topic question, but I just rocked an A on my orgo test and am planning on celebrating with new shoes.:soexcited: I was thinking of buying some boots for school, but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. Right now I am torn between Wellies and Muck boots (love muck boots - but not sure if they would be appropriate) or do you really only need good boots once you start full time clinics last year? So it wouldn't matter what I came over with...

I brought my muck boots over and so glad that I did! You will use your wellies/muck boots from 1st year/GEP onwards, especially for EMS work. The dairy and sheep farm provides you with waterproofs and wellies but the pig farm requires you to bring your own gear. Although the school says you have to wear steel-toed, they dont check as long as they are not pink polkadot rain boots. I have had no problems wearing my reinforced muck boots around the farms. 😉

BTW, my muck boots are the Tall Brit Colt from Original Muck Boot Co.

Yeah, don't listen to anyone when they tell you to buy your waterproofs and wellies right away cause you don't need them (unless you are GEP...may be diff't). Pig farm is after Christmas break.

If I was going to treat myself to some boots for around here, I would get these: http://www.smartpakequine.com/Produ...Dublin+River+Boot-_-NA&cm_vc=UpSell#pnlMiddle

I've heard they are awesome and I want some. Congrats on the O-chem!!

Also, don't know if we've posted it here or elsewhere, but several of us have blogs about the school/city.

Mine is: http://roadtodickvet.blogspot.com/ and SoBe has her link in her signature.

Don't mind my last blog complaining about the healthcare system...just one of the things you will need to adjust to here. :beat: 😀

oh my gosh, flyhi, I NEED THOSE BOOTS. Present to myself for getting into vet school? Don't mind if I do! Thanks for showing those... if I get them, will you be mad??

Packen - congrats on OCHEM! That is quite the accomplishment! Major props!
