Is UCSD hold as hopeless as a UCI hold? I was put on hold there recently and was wondering what the chances of an interview are.
Couple people here have gotten UCSD interviews a few days after being put on hold. So anecdotally, you have a chance. Same with UCSF. I haven't heard about anyone getting off UCI hold.

When were you complete? I've been complete since 9/13/04 and haven't heard a peep from them. But yea, a hold at UCSD isn't that bad. UCI, that's a different story.

I was complete on the 17th of September, but got put on hold at the end of last week. 🙁 I'm hoping to still get an interview as well.

I took the August MCAT so I was complete when the scores came in I suppose.

it seems that stats and number do not matter in this admission process ....

OH MY GOSH!!!

I went to open my mailbox today and found an unexpected surprise. My interviewer at UCI sent me a book. She sent a card too and said that she when reading it so she thought of me, the work that I do and that I should have a copy and would find it interesting.

UCI was low on my list of UCs but it has shot up there. What amazing faculty!

wxl31, that is so awesome!! She must have really liked you. 🙂

yea..."on hold" at uci as well...i wish the uc's gave us 1% of the love that out-of-state schools have..... 👎

So does "on hold" at UCI mean you are rejected. I have been "pending review" for a month now but I'm starting to think this is better than being "on hold" Any consensus guys?

my friend who's on hold called them. they said it pretty much means rejected. i'd say its better than on hold, u should call them and ask. actually, call the director and ask.

I called the UCI admissions office as well. They said the Hold means you will be reviewed at the start of the new year for interviews, and that YES, there are people on hold that receive interviews! There is still hope!

you're complaining about not seeing any movement for a week with the california schools? maybe it'll make you feel better if i tell you that i've been pending review at uci for 2 months now?

im not complaining about me not having any movement, well not necessarily, just that all week people have been talking about nothing but auburn and usc football. there are 15+ regulars on this thread that have heard very little this week, it seems. sorry to hear about UCI

they said first acceptances come out january 15. oh, btw, i called ucsd, and they said something like ,"sure, you have an interview." (well thx for telling me!! O: ). so i owe you a beer ;P.

sweet! alcohol based wagers are the best! ill bet you 30 beers you dont get a full ride to hopkins, harvard, and columbia

hmm that wouldn't be a very fair bet, but only because i applied to only hopkins out of the 3 😛.

I emailed UCI about the "on hold" thing last month... and no one has replied yet... I guess I should call them to see if I get another answer different from what you guys got .. lots of different interpretation of the "hold" status at UCI already =)

Still in the no interview zone. I'm glad to hear that I still have a shot with an "at hold" at Irvine though.

keep your hopes up medikit...i'm sure your chances are still good. I've been waiting over 2 months for UCSD and just got invited for an interview today, so they're still handing them out. It's just taking some time.

Does anyone know how long it takes to go from "review in process" to hold or interview at irvine?

swimerpaco, it took me more than three months to go from pending review to on hold.

yeah, I was pending review for 2 months, and now it changed to review in process. I should have attached a little locator to my file so I can track when it gets shuffled around.....but that would be a little too crazy, even for me.

Oooh, "review in progress" sounds promising! I must have missed that when my file was being reviewed ... I stopped checking so regularly after the second month. 😉

Does anyone know what time the UCLA interview day runs (start and end)? Thanks in advance (I'm trying to book plane tickets).

they dont really have much planned. my interview was at 11, i was done by 2.

Ha. In my case, it ended at 6:00. I don't think you'll have to worry about that, though. 😉

it started around 9 and mine ended around 3:30. it depends on when you're interview is (usually in the afternoon). you could probably call the adcom and ask what times the interviews usually end at...just to be safe, i wouldn't book a flight before 6. g'luck! :luck:

Hey there-

So I was wondering what you guys know about UCLA interviews. I'm out-of-state (so yes, I know my chances are slim and then made slimmer by not have an exceptional gpa/mcat) and I've been complete since the end of august, and I haven't heard anything. Do you know if I could have hope for an interview yet? Have they rejected anyone yet? I'm not unhappy about how this process has been going, but I had hoped they might give me a shot.

Best of luck on everyone's interviews and acceptances. =)

At my UCSD interview recently, I spoke with an out of state applicant who has a UCLA interview coming up. So they have given out of state interviews. I dont know if this is the information you wanted. It is still pretty early to give up hope.

Thanks.

I had known they had given some out, to some people complete around the same time as me. Which was why I was assuming it was the equivalent of a rejection, but I don't know whether or not they have rejected people yet. thanks tho.

I was the only one in-state at my UCLA interview, actually.

UCLA doesnt preference based on in-state residence so that shouldn't hurt you. That said, your file was already probably reviewed once and you've been most likely put on hold for further review before a decision is made.

Stanford University School of Medicine has a new curriculum and has also revamped its admissions process this year. One of the major changes in admissions is that they are now sending secondaries to all applicants (i.e. they no longer screen at this stage). Unlike a number of other schools, they don't have a 'hold for interview' category. Applicants are notified that they are either rejected or invited to interview. In past years, some applicants were notified of decisions as early as September, but this year very few notifications have been sent out--but they will be coming soon. Stanford doesn't anticipate starting interviews until January 2005 (although there might be a few in December) and they will interview ~550-600 as in past years.

Because of the scholarly concentration requirement of the new curriculum, Stanford will be looking very closely at scholarly activity that goes beyond just going to class. In most cases this will be research but is not limited to research (and not confined to bench science). So be sure that you answer the secondary questions very thoughtfully if you are applying this year. If you will be applying in the future, it is important to note that they are looking for a very strong background in more than one area (i.e. scholarly activity/research, clinical experience, leadership, community service, other extracurricular activities) and not just one area (e.g. research) unless it is truly exceptional experience.

Good grief! Forgive me for sounding cynical, but what the f*ck do the adcoms want from us? 'A truly exceptional experience'? So we basically have to be superhuman to get in? Sorry for sounding bitter, but I've had no life for four years in hopes of getting in somewhere good. I've done two clinicals and I'm presenting my research at the Biophysical Society conference in February. I have a 3.74 and a 36. And I've gotten 4 rejections. What, exactly, is good enough for these people?

what school did you go to?

That's exactly what I think is killing me. The University of Houston is a fourth-tier public school. I know people from Rice with similar credentials who got interviews at the places that turned me down (UCSF, etc.)

i haven't received an invitation to interview at USC. Am I late in the game or is it still early?

it's still early for them, don't worry.

that might be the reason you haven't heard from them yet. they probably go through the best applicants from the top schools first. i know it's unfair but this is just another aspect of the admissions process that isn't fair. congratulations on presenting your research at a conference by the way. i hope they give that it's due credit in evaluating your application. i go here, have pretty good numbers, and have publications in international clinical journals and i still haven't heard anything, so don't feel bad. i've learned quite early on in this process that they don't really select people based on obvious indicators of who's most likely to succeed all the time...

hi guys, just wanted to spread the word that i'm waitlisted at uci. interviewed on 10/11. check the status page if you interviewed that day.

i am out of state (FL) but i had a question about UC collaboration. do the uc schools discuss applicants at all? i was just wondering if they weer all individual, non-communicating entities or if there was in fact some communication. also, does anyone who has interviewed at ucla know their statistics from last year? i.e. # applicants, #interviews granted, # acceptances given? if so - they do they give data for out of state as well?

thanks,

e

same, interviewed at uci on 10/11, status page says nothing new...

UC Davis rejected me today (pre-secondary). No surprise there. Just wondering what took them so damned long. I'm guessing the other UC's will be rejecting me soon (low MCAT, and out-of-state). I just want to get it over with!

Are you sure about that Cat's Meow? I have been waiting for their secondary for a long time now and haven't received anything yet! Yesterday they e-mailed me requesting some more documnets and that was it! Are you sure they're not screening this year? (I really hope to get one!)

Did they reject you by e-mail or sent you a letter? Or did you see it on their application status page?

So what does "Alternate List" mean? Is it a waitlist that is presented to the ad com at each subsequent meeting, or does it go before the ad com only in May 😕 ?

They sent via email, and this is THE ONLY thing I've heard from Davis. They didn't confirm my AMCAS or anything. The only reason I knew they had my AMCAS was I searched around their website and found a logon page for current applicants, and my status page said they had received it. Otherwise, NOTHING. Oh well. I didn't really think I had a chance at Davis with a 23 MCAT score. Such is life! 🙂

Do you have good GPA and EC's? I'm curious about that since I think I've got it ok in everything except for my MCATs! My MCATs is similar to yours, 23P, so I know that I have low chances, but I'm hopeful.

Yeah, I'm solid otherwise. I've got alot of leardership with minority groups, some clinical (not a ton) experience, years of research (including a master's degree in molecular biology), awards, honors, 3.6 GPA, blah, blah, blah. It kills me that this stupid score is going to be my downfall. I guess you have to play the game though. I'm already preparing for next year. April MCAT . . . Here I come!

I'm thinking alternate list is like wait list.

I know they must have told us something about waitlisting during the interview...but i dont really remember what they said...it's all a blurr...
