Hey

As time is getting closer to the final decisions of the people who will become doctors in 2006 I was wondering how Cali applicants did. How many schools did you apply and how many you got accepted to. If you guys want to share undergrad, major and stats it' ll better to get a pic of the applicants. If you are from another state and want to share, please do so! :)

Eduardo

P.S. By the way, I just put a pic of me in my profile, feel free to see it! :D

I live in Orange County. I applied to 13 schools, sent in 12 secondaries, got 3 interviews (UCI, Wash U, and USC), and was accepted to UCI and currently waitlisted at the other two. My GPA was 3.9 for science, 3.8 other. I had a 34R (10-11-13) MCAT, no volunteer work, clubs, or leadership activities. I had 2 years of clinical research on Alzheimer's disease and Downs Syndrome. I am a neurbio major and I like long walks on the beach.

Boy that was dry.

Hmmmmm. . . California (in my best Homer Simpson drawl)

From LA

I applied to 22 schools. . .
Interviewed at 13 (declined 5 others)
(interviewed at SF & LA, rejected by both! :( )
Accepted at 7
Waitlisted at 2
---------------------
Matriculating at: Univ. of Pennsylvania
3.86/34T

Hope this is what you were looking for!

i applied to 14 schools, got 7 interviews, and ended up on holds/waitlists for 6 of the 7 (i didn't wait to hear from the 7th before i made my decision). i was rejected at one :( , accepted at another  , and have since withdrawn from the remaining 5.

gpa 3.69, mcat 37R

Howdy,

Applied to 12
interviewed at 8
accecpted at 3 (Duke, UCLA, USC)
Waitlisted at 5 (Stanford, UCSF, Columbia, WashU, yale)
Currently holding the spot at UCLA and on the waiting list still at Stanford and UCSF

3.54/(40-42)O (13-15V, 14B, 13P)

You Guys are awesome, Thanks a bunch for the replies!

Vin Scully: WHat did you do to prepare for the MCAT that you did so good? And the rest of you, how did you prepare?

Eduardo

I studied the Kaplan Comprehensive Review book (only $70) and took 4-5 practice tests to prep for the MCAT

wow! not all the californians could have been this successful, right?? these gpa's and mcats are dang high!

hi there,

applied to 9
interviewed at 8, rejected one invite
waitlisted at 3
accepted at 4
waiting to hear from 1
most likely matriculating at harvard
3.8/35S

I didn't do super well on the MCAT (34T) and probably should have sucked it up and dished out the $1200+ for the class, but I used my $$ instead to buy all the course materials (via ebay) for Kaplan and PR. I also bought most of the AAMC materials and plugged away for 5 hours per day for roughly two months. . .

Good Luck! :)

I was lucky to get in to 2 Cali schools with my pitiful stats. 3.89 GPA, 30R MCAT (V9, 11P, 10B). I went to UC, Irvine for undergrad.

- Applied to 30 schools (that's right 30!).
- Got 22 secondaries
- 12 interview invites
- only went to 5 interviews
- Rejected from Stanford (pre-secondary), UCLA,
UCSF, UC Davis (all post-secondary).
- Accepted by UC, San Diego and UC, Irvine.
- Will matriculate at UC, San Diego with 100% certainty.

I was accepted to schools that were not my first choices but I'm ok with that.

So now that we have spilled the beans for you Eduardo, how about telling us your situation. Don't just ask people for stuff without giving something in return. Mr. Enrique Iglesias look-alike!

why do you think your stats are pitiful, Cambrian? 3.89GPA and 30 MCAT is pretty darn good to me Gosh, it seems like all of you are applying to these top 10 schools.....i'd be happy to go to ANY school when i apply this summer.

- sent primary to 25 schools ( waay to many in retrospect, but I was waiting for my MCAT scores)
- completed 14 of 25 secondaries
- granted 12 interviews (rejected pre-interview at Duke and Baylor), went to 5 of them
- 5 acceptances (UCLA, UCSD, UCSF, Harvard, and Johns Hopkins)

3.97, 37Q

Jeez, if your stats are pitiful, mine would be too shameful to even post here. You know, until I found this website, I totally thought my MCAT score was hot but now I know better it's soo not. A big blow to my ego. :D :D

Don't be discouraged -- this process is SO idiosyncratic. For example, I was rejected post interviews from Sinai, NYU, U chicago but accepted to Yale, Wash U and Penn. . .

Keep your chin up! You never know when you might get 'lucky' -- just apply to lots of schools in a broad range!

Hey the Fly,

Thanks for the encouragement. :) I totally ditto you on the the randomness of this application process. I've been fortunate enough to get into a UC school and a few other east coast schools...so not complaining here.

i just wanted to tell the latin dr. that your screen name fits you--nothing personal though. :)

Hmmm... this thread is beginning to get interesting!

Accepted to those top schools and turned down by those others? Now that's just another proof that this process is so FUBAR !!! Damn, I wish I had applied to the Harvard and Yale of the medical schools. But then again, I don't have your MCAT Fly!

Yo. 3.9/37

Of the schools I chose to actually go and interview... (As you can see, I really really really wanted to stay in cali or live in NYC, hehe)

Accepted:
-UCSD (where I'm headed, baby!!)
-Columbia
-Cornell
-NYU

Waitlisted:
-UCLA

Rejected:
-UCSF

i just liked that guy's picture thats all; as for UCs, i interviewed at sf, la and drew-la; turned down davis, withdrew from sd and irvine (they sent me a secondary in april). i am going to sf and withdrew from elsewhere. in the end, it does not matter where you go, as long as it is a US school and you do well on boards, you still will be a physician, don't sweat it.

By the way, I just read the thread more closely...

AND WOW. you guys are simply amazing. I'd like to give a big congrats to every1 that posted. :) :) :) :)
By the way, if you are holding onto a UCLA acceptance, how much ($$$$) will it take for you to drop it? hehe

Matthew, I don't have any UCLA acceptance to give. But damn, I would love to have your acceptances on the East coast. Yale, Columbia, woweeee !!!!

I know, it was completely f***ed up to say the least! Because the schools that shafted me gave notice earlier, I was (understandably) totally freaked for a little while before I started getting more admits! :)

I'll add in my .02.

3.38 Undergrad, 3.67 Grad. Masters Degree in Biochem, 2 years ER Volunteer, 2 years america reads volunteer. 37 MCAT (14B, 13P, 10 V)

Rejected across the board, except for USC.

Thanks Lady in red for saying that!

Thanks guys for posting all that great stuff, you guys are awesome, never had seen a group of people with constant high stats as yours! " keep REPRESENTIG CALI!!"

he makes enrique iglesias look ugly :D :D

I took the PR MCAT class. The class was not as helpful as just going through all the materials, and especially taking practice tests. If you just get the feel of how they ask the questions it makes a big difference.

Applied to 25 schools
Interviewed at 4 (USC, UVM, Hawaii, Syracuse)
Accepted at one (UVM)
Waitlisted at Hawaii and Syracuse
Added USC to my 22 rejections
Will most likely attend UVM, unless I decide to live in Hawaii or USC accepts my appeal

3.3UG GPA, 36 MCAT, PhD in molecular biol.

UCLA undergrad - 3.94/37Q
About a year's worth of clinical experience, two years of research, many years of music, couple other things...

Sent in 15 secondaries.
Rejected pre-interview from UCSF, UCLA, Harvard, Hopkins, Yale, Cornell, Stanford.
Received 8 interview invites (UCSD, USC, Baylor, Penn, WashU, UCI, Michigan, declined UC Davis).
Rejected post-interview from WashU :( .
Waitlisted at UCSD (bottom of pool), Baylor, Michigan (2nd tier), Penn (2nd tier).
Put on hold at UCI.
Accepted to USC.

Applied to: 6 (5 UC's and WashU)

Interviews: UCLA and WashU

Accepted: WashU

Waitlisted: UCLA

Rejected/Withdrew everywhere else post secondary

GPA: 3.9
MCAT: 37 (11,13,13)

Hey Matthew, looks like you and I are eerily similar, hopefully UCLA has spots for us both. Best of luck, I'm still holding out hope cause I really, really would like to stay in Cali.

Would any of you take UC Davis over Hopkins? Tuition difference is significant. And no, I don't know if I want to do primary care or research.

Premeds look at me like I'm crazy when I suggest this. Medical students say, "you've got an interesting choice." Residents say, "debt sucks."

Thoughts?

I would take any UC over any Ivy League schools. Yes, I'm utterly honest here. Money is a very big factor. 100K vs. 200K is no competition, guys. Remember that subsidized loans are only about 8K a year. Besides, CA is the best state.
I applied to around 34 schools
Turned in secondaries to about 20 schools.
Interview invites: 10
Went to 8 interviews.
Accepted: NYMC, UTMB in Texas (about to withdraw)
Waitlisted: UCSD, GW, UT southwestern
Acceptable, on hold: UCI, UCD, BU
GPA: 3.95. Undergrad: UC irvine. (i'm transfer student. UC GPA: 3.87)
MCATs: 32O (7V, 13P, 12B). I took MCAT three times. I got 6 on verbal in the first two. English is my second language.

sorrento - have you heard back about financial aid yet?

I thought that the difference between UC and private school would be huge, given the differences in tuition (10K vs ~30K) but the need based stuff from private schools will end up covering my tuition, leaving me to worry about living expenses, etc., while the grants I got from UCs didn't even cover half of the cost of thier tuition.

Think about debt as one of the main factors in your decision, but don't make money be the "be all, end all" in determining your final choice. Minimizing debt is important, but you need to consider the "fit" of the school to your personal tastes/goals as well.

Good luck!

My stats: 3.87 GPA, 28Q (9V,9B,10P)
Applied:22
Secondaries completed:17
Interview invites:8
Interviews attended:6 (UCI, UCD, U Miami, NYMC, Drew/UCLA, Meharry)
Waitlists:1 (NYMC)
Accepted:3 (UC Irvine,Miami, Meharry)
Waiting to hear from:2 (UCD, Drew/UCLA)

Good luck everyone!- There's hope for Californians with MCATs below 30!

What's so magic about WUSTL such that it was the only non-uc you applied to??

What about HMS, Yale, Penn, Columbia, Cornell --
why St. Louis over Boston, NYC, etc. . .

Just curious! :D

Here's to hoping there's a UC in your future!!

Let that be a warning to all you newbies thinking about procrastinating with AMCAS.

••••I didn't decide to apply this year until November. I'm graduating with only 3 years of undergrad, and I was initially planning on taking a year off to go abroad and do some medical volunteer work. Anyway, plans changed and I got my AMCAS done around November 16th or so, and just missed many of the application deadlines. WashU just happened to be a school that I read about in MSAR and liked. Part of me wants to wait another year and try for HMS or Hopkins, but I really loved WashU when I interviewed there, so I don't think I can pass up the opportunity. Plus, this application process really sucks as you all know well  and I don't really want to go through it all again.

This is what I don't understand about Cali schools. Every poster here has such competitive stats but many of you only get a few interviews at Cali schools. There are people who get interviews from Yale, Columbia, Cornell, WashU, etc and only get one interview from a Cali school. I still don't understand even though I've been through the process. Is it because Cali schools are super-selective due to the massive number of applicants applying every year?

Procrastinator, what undergrad school did you attend in Cali?

here is my story:
3.77/34R
-20 secondaries
-14 interview invites (went to 13)
-rejected pre-interview (Harvard :( , Pritzker, Rochester, NYMC  , BU, LL)
- rejected post-interview (Standford, MCW , UCLA)
- waitlisted: (U of Mich (1st tier), NUMS, UCSD, UCD, UCSF, Pitt, Sinai, USC) - I know, its a pit pathetic.
