Hello all. I was curious if any of you had any ideas for car rentals during an elective rotation. Do most of you use the bus when your at your elective rotation the whole month or mostly rely on the bus? I will be in a city where I don't know anyone at all and need some efficient transportation but can't imagine paying for a rental car for a whole month. Just thought I would ask.

I’m doing electives in Michigan right now. Last month I didn’t have a car, and it sucked. 30 straight days without leaving the square block around the hospital … ugh. This month I got a month long rental off of priceline. Even with all the discounts for membership to professional organizations, it was still cheaper to just do the “name your own price” and I ended up getting it for a pretty reasonable price. It’s awesome to have a car around for running to the store, or just to get out and see the city.

I think it completely depends on where you do your rotation.

I used the bus while I was in San Francisco and it was fine.

Since you are asking this question, I assume you own a car. Your previous posts indicate you are in OK, or KS and if so you can drive to either coast in a weekend. Even if you are on the East or West coast you can take a three day weekend and get your car to the other coast. So don't waste hundreds of dollars paying for a rental and save the cost of a plane ticket by driving your own car. Plus medical books are very heavy so with the ridiculous new baggage policies you will not be able to pack much baggage.

This is what I was thinking, unless you have a reason you can't drive, why not? Make a quasi-fun road trip out of it. While gas prices are pretty high driving is still usually cheaper depending on how long the flight is.

Figuring out a new city's geography can be hard enough let alone figuring out how to use its transportation system. Unless you are going to a place like San Francisco with a well established public transit system I would drive out myself.
