No Love from EMORY, COLUMBIA AND UIC =(

its always lovely when you end the week on a crappy note.

I have nothing constructive to add except that this was a bloody week of rejections for me as well. After entering the week with 5 IVs and 5 rejections, I ended the week with the same 5 IVs and now 13 rejections...ouch!

Two IVs for me so far guys.. Politely disregarded by many and waiting to hear from more than a few.. Seems like the season is coming to an end though.. I've heard that the number of applications to programs are actually less than a couple of years ago.. Don't know how true that is but the subject is open to discussion.. anyone can lend me their night goggles so I can see whats at the end of this DARK tunnel..

A waitlist does exist for UIC (University of Illinois at Chicago), but it is not clear if all applicants who do not receive an interview initially are placed on this list. Hope this helps.

If you practice more and impress them strongly, two interviews are enough. I have a friend who matched to Boston University IM with just two IV 2 years ago. If you prepare well, try harder, anything can happen.

Did anyone hear anything from Newark Beth Israel, New Jersey. I heard that they sent out invites.

anyone hear from scripps, cedars, cal pacific?

I think Cal Pacific invites later...like maybe even in March...unless they have changed things vs. a couple of years ago when I interviewed. Some places still send out interview invites even in March, and definitely in late February, so if you haven't been rejected from places yet, don't lose hope.

This has been the case for our program since ERAS began accepting cardiology applications. Our volume went down about 25%. Although I'm not sure why this is, I've speculated that it's because the timeline is so much shorter now. Although you guys have the ability to start your submissions in July using ERAS, in the old days we used to start accepting paper applications starting around the first of October, so applicants had three months to apply/complete their submissions.

Although the volume has decreased...I've got to say that the competitiveness of the candidate pool has grown. Maybe it's due to more people utilizing the internet to pare down their list of programs, I can't be certain. When considering the quality of applicants way back when we were getting paper applications and our volume was higher, more than half of them didn't meet minimums.

:luck:

I am a PGY-3, large university residency program, research in residency, few pubs, strong letters and usmle scores. I did not apply last year because I was asked to stay to be chief.

Only 5 interview invites to date. Comparing myself to my colleagues who applied to other subspecialties and have >10 interview invites; this is truly a humbling experience.

Is there a magic number of interviews needed to match successfuly??

magic number = just one good one ;-)

jokes aside our program director advised applying broad, going to at least 10 interviews and ranking favorite 8. With that said its obvious that this number is very different depending on the applicant and the programs involved.

on a separate note i'm not looking forward to this week. contrary to majority here that want answers and state not hearing back is torture... to me hearing back can as easily mean a rejection as it can stand for an interview (looking at recent trend more likely the former). as long as you're not rejected you're in the game... as more interviews go out the lucky ones with double digit interviews may have to start thinking about dropping a couple of appointments and well if there is a wait list you may get some good news. rejections are final people. once a programs says thanks but no thanks that's it for them.

i just hope this week doesn't pick up on the same horrible barrage of crap news that last week ended on. 😉

ps: chris stop reading this post. you matched already you lucky s.o.b.

hey does anyone know how is Lahey Clinic for training? im interested in interventional.. any advice will be appreciated..

I just want to say thanks for all your input and insight, you have no idea how great of a service you are doing for all the applicants. Getting a little insight and encouragement about the system during this very difficult process is really reassuring. I only wish more doctors and attendings would take your approach.

Thanks again.

Some food for thought. I was rejected by the University of Rochester in early January. But, two weeks later, I was invited for interview. Have HOPE; don't give up.

rejection... than an interview?? 😱 good to know. congrats on the interview bro

Anyone hear anything from UF-gainesville, USF, or Miami?
Also, anything from UNC or Wake?

Last year I got a rejection from Northwestern but they said they may contact me again later. I ended up getting an interview a few weeks after that. Ultimately, I went back for a second look which was accomodated very warmly, indicating they were serious about me as well. Ended up going elsewhere, so I don't truly know if I could've matched, but the feedback was very strong (which is encouraging coming off the reject list).

has anyone heard from NYU med center, mayo rochester, ballor dallas, oshner or CCF?

I have not heard from NYU, CCF, or baylor dallas. Actually, I haven't heard from any of the new york programs such as all the Einsteins. Has anyone else?

To question above- I got an interview from Wake Forest approx 1 month ago and from Univ of Florida-Gainesville 2 weeks ago. Nothing good recently.

My update:

IV: Emory, Wake Forest, University of Virginia, Duke, Univ of Colorado, UT-Southwestern and Florida

Reg: MGH, Northwestern, WashU, Texas Heart, Vandy, UPenn

Waiting on: Cleveland Clinic, Michigan, UAB, Brigham, Beth Israel Deaconess (Boston)

I have not heard from the NY programs, except from Columbia.

I can't wait for tomorrow...I actually like Fridays the best because Fridays seem to bring in the invites and I love golden weekends (I am on elective now). 🙂

I would like to see people posting minimum (or basic) requirements from fellowship programs from your own hospitals. Fellwoship program at your own institution, how do they sort 500 to 600 applications. Do they have any minimum score(USMLE) criteria? I heard there few programs look minimum 90 on both steps and never fail on step three etc..

This information will help all the applicants

PregramCoordinator your input will help alot here

Program Name:
Score requirement:
Research: Must / optional
any other criteria

Personally, I think this belongs on its own thread. This thread seems to be more directed to people who have already applied and are patiently- and agonizingly- waiting for interviews, and relying on the help of their colleagues to give a sense of who's inviting and who's not. I think at this point we know two things- 1. cardiology is a hard match and 2. there is not always a decipherable logic to who gets what.

I think this point in my career- having applied for college, med school, residency, and now fellowhip- I can confidently say there is no magic formula for entrance to prestigious places, but perhaps some necessary screening. Higher scores and more awards is better. The opposite is worse. Everything in between, you apply and wait. I had a sense of where I would be competitive and where I wouldn't and I suspect most of us do. It's not always accurate, but you click submit on 12/1/08 and spend the subsequent days afterwards praying.

Email from University of Tennessee, about 50$ sur change. I am not sure how many of us received this email. ProgCoordinator, your input will be very useful. I received a total of 4 email this year. Initially, I just ignored. BUT now the process is getting tougher, I really don't want to miss any chance. Should we pay or not? Any input?

I kind of doubt the ProgCoordinator will tell us the name of the school/hospital. I think the rest of the info would be really helpful for upcoming application cycles. I'm actually gathering info for my husband who will be in this mess next year. I find the whole thing very interesting and pretty much a crap shoot.

Thanks. I decided to let it go. Today actually is a pretty quiet day.

🙁 back from 1st IV. Sent thank you email to 5 people, only 1 response to day. No reply from PD, Associate PD, PC. Don't think I screwed up. So sad.

Thanks prog. coord.

One program sent me an e-mail that they would be ranking me but were unable to interview all the candidates. Its hard to make out what this means. Does it mean that I am a back-up for them in the sense that they would interview only their most desirable candidates and put me lower down the list or does it imply that they dont even have to interview me.. (thinking more of the former- but dont want to influence everyone elses opinion).. ??

Anyone hear from the Illinois Programs? Rush, Stroger, or Loyola?

has anyone heard from NYU med center, mayo rochester, ballor dallas, oshner or CCF?

Got an IV at Ochsner several weeks ago. Nothing from Baylor Dallas. The southeast programs seem to be slow to respond (or maybe its just me!)

Has anyone heard from the UT's (both Texas and Tennessee), UNC, Wake, or UAB.

Also, did anyone apply to MUSC (non-ERAS) or hear from them?

By the way, my current stats:

PGY-3, AMG, large university program, average scores, great letters, and some pubs in good journals. Also, will be taking one-year research position next year prior to fellowship (pending a match of course 👍)

IV - 5
Rejections - 8
Waiting - 22

Brown (Rhode Island) sent out Invite today.

Also, Wake Forest is already interviewing, to answer the above post.

Mount Sinai (main program) is inviting, or in my case, rejecting.

Rejection from Einstein (PA) via ERAS

Interview from Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston today.

Rejections: MSSM and Einstein PA

AMG (PGY2)
Incredibly nice and well liked by my friends and family
Low average board scores
Middle tier IM residency
Many publications, posters, and presentations
Likely solid letters of recommendations
IV: Dartmoth-Hichcock, UMDNJ (Cooper), Henry Ford Hospital, Iowa, New Mexico, Yale, Utah, OHSU, Mayo Jacksonville.
Reg: 23 (No clear trend. rejected by many of my " safety" schools as well as high end academic programs)
Waiting: 35 (most of which have sent IV and/or Reg to many of those posting on this site)

I heard nothing today...no rejections no invites

Just curious when did you hear from U of New Mexico?

Rejection Albert Einstein.
