Amen to that! Although each time this thread gets bumped and I get an email saying there's a new message in it my heart does a little flutter. Hopefully it won't be too much longer until we find out! 🙂

Hey CCLCMer,

I was wondering if you know what CCLCM's policy is on deferring acceptance. With classes starting so early in July, that gives me not much of a vacation. I really want to rest up before medical school, but one month is very little.

Thanks

You do realize that if you defer, you'd be waiting an entire year to start, right? My understanding is that deferrals are possible, but only if you have a very good reason. I'll be honest with you: "only having a month to rest" doesn't sound like a very legit reason to defer your acceptance to me unless you have some kind of medical condition. But it's not up to me, so if you really think you need 13 months to rest for whatever reason, then you'd need to talk to the admissions office. Probably you should get in touch with Dean Franco specifically.

CCLCMer,

There is no need to be sarcastic about it. Some people have their reasons for needing time off, and I don't really want to divulge mine on this forum. A lot of people take time off between undergrad and medical school because of the stress of four years of undergrad. If I knew that I initially needed time off, I wouldn't have applied this year. However, certain things have come to fruition recently, and having only one month is too short of a time for me; especially since I want to go into medical school with a fresh mind and body. I don't think that any medical school, CCLCM included, would want one of their students to start the year in the wrong frame of mind. I only asked you this question because you have been extremely helpful to everyone on this thread. You can understand that I was surprised and a little insulted at your sarcastic and insensitive reply to my question.

I really don't read CCLCMer's response as either sarcastic or insensitive. You posted with very limited information about your reason of deferral and did kind of make it sound like you just wanted an extended vacation after undergrad (which you explain is not the case... but we surely could not discern that from your post). I think other SDNer's would have responded in the same way CCLCMer did. It seems that the general rule is that schools are much more flexible with granting deferrals when there is a pressing or emergency situation, family crisis, health issue, etc. These things certainly do come up for some applicants and can be completely unforseen. I truly hope by the time you start med school you feel ready and refreshed.

I would only wonder if CCLCM might have a harder time granting deferrals since their class size is so tiny compared to other med schools. But I tend to think their administration is understanding and you should definitely discuss this with them. Best of luck!

Wow, you took my last post completely the opposite of how I meant it. I apologize if it came out sounding sarcastic. I certainly didn't intend to insult you or suggest that you should post your personal issues on SDN. But I did want to make sure you understand that you can't defer your med school acceptance without having a good reason, and what you said ("With classes starting so early in July, that gives me not much of a vacation. I really want to rest up before medical school, but one month is very little.") doesn't sound like much of a reason except that you just feel like taking a longer break. You don't have to tell ME the real reason, but I think you need to have a better reason to give Dean Franco if you want her to grant you the deferral. And I also wanted to make sure you realize that a med school schedule isn't run the same way like in undergrad. You can't take a semester off for a few months break and then start classes in January or something in med school. You only can start in the summer, no other time. So if you do defer from CCLCM or anywhere else, you'd have to do it for the whole year, and you'd be taking over a year-long break. So that's another thing you should consider, if you really need that much time off or not, and what you would do during that entire year off. I think after 13 months you'd probably be so well rested you wouldn't need to sleep for your whole first block. 😛 (That's supposed to be a joke, not sarcasm. :scared: )

Right, this was basically what I was trying to say. No disrespect intended whatsoever. If you have a good reason, it is possible to get a deferral. I know of a couple of people who did get granted deferrals, even though the class is small. But again, you should have a good reason to ask for one.

Hey CCLCMer,

Thanks for responding. I guess I just took your reply the wrong way. It isn't that I want 13 months off, it is just that 1 month maybe too little to sort out my situation. I understand that by deferring you come in one year late. Thanks for your insight into this issue and all the other issues you have been able to help people with on this thread. I think it is the most helpful thread on this forum because you actually give a sense of credibility and honesty to the thread. Thanks for your help!

So..........any february interviewees have any news?? maybe this could be the week?

i am starting to think it's waitlist? kinda sad but i would rather accept the truth 🙁

i am still going to hope for an acceptance, but I think the majority of people are put on hold initially anyway.

My understanding is that people who haven't heard yet will have to go on hold until more spots open up. Second look is next week already, so hang in there, guys. More spots should be opening up soon. :luck:

Wow, that sucks. So much for "February interviews" aren't for the waitlist - had I known that I would have tried to reschedule when I got the invite back in December. Plus, it'd be nice for the school to actually let us know that we're all on hold until post whatever date instead of just making us wait for letters in the mail indefinitely, especially since they require a decision by April 15th.

wow, yeah. i guess we'll have to wait for post April 15th. what a bummer. it would be nice if all interviews were done in time for everyone to have a chance of hearing something and attending second look.

Yeah...another february interviewee here. I got a sense the entire time I was there that I was interviewing for a waitlist spot. Oh well...it said on their website to apply early.

True, although if they accept the August MCAT (no longer a problem this year I presume) they should continue to consider those applications for full acceptance or let you know the interview is for a waitlist spot when you get it. I received my invite on December 13th, but since I was also coordinating with the Case University program, the earliest date I got was in late February due to the whim of whoever I talked to at Case that day (since they require you to coordinate with the university program before the college program). Other people at my interview date weren't invited until mid/late January.

No, being on hold is not the same as being on the waitlist. I'm sorry if I didn't make that clear. Some people who are on hold are going to be accepted but there's not room for them yet. CCLCM doesn't overaccept like a lot of schools do. Only 32 people are accepted at any time. So if you're a later interviewee and they want to accept you, then they have to put you on hold until someone else drops and there's a spot, and then you'll be accepted without going on the waitlist. As far as I know, the waitlist hasn't been made up yet, but I think it will be soon.

If anyone is reading this who is getting ready to apply now, it's definitely better to apply earlier. All of the Case programs, including CCLCM, are rolling. So you want to get your apps in as soon as you can. Also, make sure to keep on top of your letters of recommendation. If the school is missing some of them, your file won't be complete and you can't be invited to interview until you're complete. Apparently that happens to several people every year.

:luck: to everyone. 🙂

 my app was complete in early August. i think part of my file was misplaced because I called every month or two to check on it and i finally got an invite at the very end of the cycle. oh well.

Hello CCLCMer,
you have been extremely helpful and we all thank you for that. i'm a little confused about this on hold/waitlist thing. so from what you said, if people were to be accepted straight out of the on hold pool if one of the spots opens up, isn't that essentially a waitlist? also, i dont know if this has been covered before, but is the onhold/waitlist ranked? Thanks so much.

Did they confirm that your app was complete? If so, then you were complete. It took them several months to invite me also. I was complete in September I think and didn't interview until January.

For future applicants, what I'm saying is that if you don't get confirmation a few weeks after you think you've submitted everything, you should contact the admissions office and find out what's missing. That goes for any med school, not just here. CCLCM is pretty nice about emailing you to tell you that they're missing letters or whatever, but a lot of schools won't do that. So it's up to the applicants to keep tabs on their files being complete.

I'm not totally clear on how the waitlist works either. But it's definitely different than being on hold. What happens is that after your interview, you get a ranking based on your interview, app, letters, etc. There is a score cutoff, and people who score above that cutoff are immediate accepts. If there is a space open at that time, they get called right away. But if not, then they go on hold until a space opens up. Then they get accepted. But they were already ranked as immediate accepts from the beginning, there just wasn't space for them.

Ok, so there are also a lot of people who score below the cutoff but not so low that they get rejected. Those are people who ultimately go on the waitlist. I think that the waitlist is not ranked. But I'm not sure how the adcomm decides who to take off the waitlist. I will try to find out more about this from Dean Franco for you.

i got a hold letter...so did some people get waitlist letters?😱

exactly what I was going to ask. I thought there were only 3 outcomes post-interview: accept/on hold/reject. I suppose you could be "an immediate accept if a spot opens up" while on the on hold list, but you wouldn't know about it? this process is rather confusing, but i think we are getting somewhere heh.

Yeah, I was confirmed complete the first week of August. I'm not complaining because I was really happy to get an interview at all... just wish I had been able to interview earlier in the year.

And I think at this point a waitlist hasn't been made so there isn't a difference between waitlist and hold YET. I imagine they'll make a formal waitlist around April 15??

I'm not sure whether Dean Franco contacts these people to let them know or not. I know that she does call the people who are immediate accepts when there are open slots. Sorry that I can't be more helpful.

Ok, I spoke to Dean Franco briefly yesterday afternoon. She said that the interviewees are all ranked, and the lowest people with no chance of getting in are already off the list. I assume that means some rejections were sent out, but she didn't explicitly say that. Apparently there are rare occasions where someone's file goes back to the committee and their rank changes, but not often. The next acceptances are lined up and ready to go out as soon as some people drop. She expects that to start happening around mid-April, since our drop date is April 15. So the likeliest date you guys will start hearing is around April 16. A few people may also hear around May 15.

I know that people can still get accepted up until right before school starts, though. People don't usually drop in early summer, but it happens occasionally. There is at least one current student who got in off the waitlist in mid June a couple of weeks before orientation started. Good luck, everyone. 🙂

thanks for the info, CCLCMer! I guess I will just have to sit tight and hope I was highly ranked and that a spot opens up.

Thanks for the update CCLCMer. Sigh...

are you female or male?
i just wanna see those who are eager to get off the waitlist are like me (female) or not...

wait i thought we just figured out that there is no "waitlist"... LOL.

Anyway, I'm on "hold", and I am a member of the female gender as well.

Damn, and I was just about to send an update/LOI with transcripts and 2 LORs. I am wondering if I should forget since i am already ranked🙁

Also female. Woot.

Um, I think you should still do it. Who knows, it might bump your ranking up/get your reconsidered and if you really wanna go there, it would suck to possibly not get in and then have to wonder whether or not an update would have helped. I think telling them it's your top choice based on x, y, or z reasons if it really is might also help since it's such a small program and they probably want to fill from the hold/waitlist with people who are actually going to come. Just my uneducated opinion though.

Am I the only guy on the hold list? lol...but yeah, I want to get off the hold list too

Yeah, I would send it anyway. It can't hurt, and it might help. And at least you'll know that you did everything you could. Good luck, I'm rooting for you guys. :luck:

any news? I haven't heard from them.. and it's almost 4 weeks since my interivew

nothing here. and it's hard to stay optimistic knowing their class is full and they're already having second look. i don't even know why they interviewed us.

I have been wondering the same thing. Why did they interview everybody in February when it appears that the class was already filled. If I had known this, I definitely wouldn't have wasted my money to go to Cleveland. This is so frustrating...

Also, I was told, too, that we would receive a decision four weeks after my interviews. Well, it has been 4 weeks and I have heard absolutely nothing. More waiting appears to be on hand, the bane of our existence as pre-meds hanging on by a thread to sanity.

Agreed. I certainly could have used the extra money spent on hotel and airfare, not to mention shleping around Cleveland in a few feet on snow for four days. I just wish they had A. offered me an earlier interview since I got invited in December and B. made their acceptance/hold policy known before the interview (or even afterwards for that matter - there's been no transparency other than that found on SDN).

Oh well, good luck guys! Hopefully it won't be too much longer. :luck: :luck: :luck:

Aww, I'm sorry you have to wait so long to hear. 🙁 I know it's really sucky. But I think you'll find out whether you got accepted or waitlisted within the next few weeks. And don't think that you can't get accepted just because you interviewed late. There are several people in my class who interviewed in January and February last year, including me. There will definitely be some more spots opening up by mid April. Dean Franco said that she has some more acceptances ready to send as soon as that happens. Good luck, you guys.

anybody any news???

no mail today...

all my mail goes to my mom and she's starting to get disappointed that i am not receiving anything from the school. I just want to get a mail so at least if i am waitlisted, i can send renewed transcript and a new recommendation letter. anybody willing to call the admission's office? I called them last week so i feel i shouldn't :scared:

CCLCM does not seem to have a ranking separate from Case in any of the published lists, any ideas on where it would be if it were rated on its own? I realize that the first class hasn't graduated yet, so there are no statistics to base it on, but just wanted to get an idea about whether it would be considered as a top ten school, top twenty school, etc.

I don't think you're going to hear much for at least a few more weeks yet. Dean Franco told me after April 15 when I talked to her a couple of weeks ago. Sorry. 🙁

No, there isn't any separate ranking for CCLCM. Even after our first class graduates in 2009, we still won't have an independent ranking. We are part of Case, so we're ranked wherever Case is ranked. If it is really important to you to attend a school that has a top ten or top twenty ranking, this might not be the best program for you. We're kind of an untraditional program. 🙂

sorry if this was answered already but on the hold letter it stated we would know by mid-April what our status was...that includes continued hold, accepted, and perhaps rejected?
