It seems that the whole issue of the dean leaving, etc. has kind of died down. Has anyone heard anything new? The only information I have heard I got from this site and would be interested in learning more. Later. Joshua

Haven't heard anything about the dean, but i do have a question on immunizations. Did anyone who get them have to get a booster? I haven't had any immunizations since i was a kid. Should i just go get my titers measured, or probably get a booster first? Also, i was told by a nurse that you can't get a tetanus shot anymore unless you need it because of an injury. how much does all this stuff cost anyway???? thanks!

No word about the dean situation, the Midwestern web site doesn't really seem to offer any new or for that matter, changing, information about the school. As far as immunizations go, don't get boosters, just get the titers drawn. Overall I had to pay just a small amount for my titers, because insurance paid for most of it and I had the labs drawn at the hospital where I work so I had a discount. I think at orientation there will be a titer draw for a discounted price. On the issue of tetanus, its true that there is a shortage and its not supposed to be given unless a patient is at risk,(i.e. recent penetrating injury). I would call the health office at midwestern to discuss this, or try to contact your primary care doctor to discuss it, if you have one. If you say you are going to medical school and you absolutely need one, then he or she will probably decide its okay to give you one. Its not that much in short supply that they can't give you one booster. Josh, thanks for putting this thread back to the top.

well I went to the MWU website today and there is noone listed as dean of the chicago college of osteopathic medicine in the 'governance' section on the website. Also, on the CCOM homepage there used to be a 'Dean's Message' Link, which seems to have disappeared. So, it must be true. As far as news that's about the best I can do. As far as immunizations go I would just get the titers. I would think that you should be alright and if not you can get them administered at CCOM during the orientation.
Anyone have any exciting plans for the summer? I would have liked to have gone to Europe for a couple of weeks before school started but the finances just aren't there, with having a pretty expensive apartment and a mediocre job it just doesn't work out. I am going to just relax as much as possible this summer and spend some quality time with friends and family and just get myself mentally ready for the road ahead. Hope everyone is doing well.

Joshua

I'm going on a cruise to the caribbean for 7 days with my girlfriend. At first, we thought it was too much money, especially when we should be saving, but I decided to go ahead with it, hopefully it will be fun. Ive never done one before. Im also going to be doing a lot of running, biking etc., im doing some triathlons this summer, including Mrs. T's in Chicago the week before school starts. That should be my last big effort to race because when school starts, I know the time will be pretty limited to work out. I quit work in mid July, can't wait for that. Although working at an ER has been great, after I found out I got in ive just lost any desire to work anymore, i just want to go out and goof around all the time. It reminds me of my spring semester of senior year in high school after I'd already been accepted to college. When are you guys moving in? The LLC dorms start moving in on the 27th, so I think I'll move in that day. I'll be in the area the week before for the race, does anyone want to get together before oreintation starts? It would be a great way to start the school year.

Don't know if anyone else heard this, but i just found out that the out of state tuition has gone up for this year. it is now 31,430. oh well, whats another $1500 a year added onto the 100,000,000 im already gonna owe!! by the way, i know that some students from other schools are using a list serve on Yahoo to communicate with each other. does anyone know how this works??

whats all this talk about having titers drawn at orientation? Dont we have to get our medical forms sent in my july 1st?

they do have to be in by July 1st. But you can opt to have them done at school during the orientation. The cost to have them done is about $285. This price was much cheaper than the cost of getting it done by my PCP. Hopefully they coded it in a way that is covered by my insurance. Look through the information that was sent from the office of student services. Later.

Well it looks as if CCOM has hired a new dean. Someone on another thread said they met her over the weekend. Her name is Karen Nichols and I did some searching on the internet and found a Karen Nichols that was the assistant dean of graduate medical education. I am guessing that they just promoted from within. So, this should be the new dean. She has an impressive CV. Here it is if you would like to see it: Click Here . Just an update. Hope it helps. JOSHUA

Sorry, i should have put this post under this topic, but i started a new one.

Did anyone else get a letter from CCOM today with their e-mail account info. I just checked it out, and everyone is listed on it! The server is up for our incoming class.

I'm planning to visit the LLC dorms next week or the following week. If anyone would like me to ask any questions about on-campus housing during my visit, please post them in this thread.

I too got my email account from CCOM last week. I was wondering if since they have the email accounts up and running if there was a possibility of doing a listserv for the 2006 Class? I am really not familiar with what a listserv is or how it operates. If anyone knows anything, maybe they could set one up and notify the admissions office of it and they could tell all of the incoming CCOM students about so that we could have a forum for our class. I think it would be nice to be able to talk to members of the class before school starts.

JOSH

Two of us are planning a day trip to CCOM next Monday (6/24) to check out the bookstore, talk to financial aid, and pretty much check the place out. We know there aren't any med students taking classes, but since we have the day off we might as well go. My name is Mark Philips and my friend is Jim Pavlich. If anyone is interested in joining us let me know.

[email protected] :D

I forgot to mention we are both going to be M1s this fall.

Hey, does anyone know when we are going to receive any further info on class schedules, orientation dates, confirmation of housing agreements, etc..? I haven't heard anything for a long time from CCOM (except my email address) and I was wondering if anyone has heard anything. I emailed the office of student services, and haven't heard any reply. I presume they are very busy. Just wondering about this, Im excited to start.

I called them last week to ask them something about my transcripts, and they told me that we will be getting out orientation packets around the middle of July. Also, we are supposed to be recieving our financial aid info around that time to. Has anyone had their blood titers drawn yet? i'm having mine dones in two weeks and was wondering how much it costs? they couldnt give me a price until they bill it to the insurance company the nurse told me. i already know my insurance company wont cover it, so does anyone know what im gonna end up paying??

I had my titers drawn some time back and I added them up when I got the invoice for the services and it came out to something like $400-$500. I was astonished at how much it cost. In my opinion I think you would be smart to just wait until orientation and go with having the titers drawn by the school, I think that the cost for them to do it is only $280. If that works for you I would do it. I haven't gotten the bill from the insurance company yet, but hopefully my PCP coded it in a way that the insurance company won't pay for it. And then if they do bill me for it I hope that I have stopped working so I can claim that I am unemployed and therefore cannot pay. I also was getting nervous that they forgot I would be attending since it had been so long since I had heard anything from them. Then I got my email address. Can't wait to start.

I hope to give some advice as a Chicago native that may be helpful. Although I got into CCOM I could not stand the thought of living so conveniently close to my family, and I could probably only afford to rent a trailer in the area. Try looking for places in Addison off of Lake Street. The area is a bit shady, but the prices are the cheapest that you are going to find.. About 700 for a 1 bedroom with a dishwasher, but that is as good as you will get in the Chicago area. I hope you all have fun in the windy city in the fall.... I think I may just try and see a mountain or two in PA and give the East Coast life a try!

Hey, haven't heard much from my future classmates in a while. I just received some info about Karen Nichols, our new dean. She seems great. She sounds like she's really into the advancement of DOs and at the same time is a great doc! Im glad to hear such positive news about the dean. At first I was worried about changes in the administration, but now I think its for the best. I look forward to meeting her. See you guys in 2 months from tomorrow!!!

Conmant, I agree with you totally. I was worried about what a change in the administration would mean for us, the incoming class. But, I think Dr. Nichols sounds amazing and will truly be a bigger plus for our class. Well, we can start the countdown tomorrow. See you all in a couple of months. I hope everyone is having a relaxing and enjoyable summer. Take Care.

Im on the countdown...7 more days of work. And let me tell you, I can't wait to be done. Only 7 more shifts of cleaning up after those doctors. Only 7 more days of being bossed around by the nurses. Only 7 more days of bringing juice to the kids of a patient who have been waiting oh so patiently. As much as I have learned from my job, now that Im almost done, I can't wait. Hey, does anyone have hotel recommendations for the Downers Grove area? I need to have a room for about 5 days while orientation is going on. Everything seems so expensive there. Allright, Josh, thanks for the bump. Bye

Do any of you folks know anything about the alternate list, or anyone being pulled off of it? Hoping to join you guys soon.

:)
Hello class of 2006. My name is Melissa and I will be joining you all at CCOM this fall. I am from the Detroit Metro Area and I did my undergrad at Central Michigan University. This gall I am living in the traditional hall (2nd floor). I am not too happy about returning to dorm life but my friend who is a fourth year at CCOM said that it is not that bad and that it is very convenient. As for now, I am just trying to enjoy my summer and concentrating on relaxing and having fun. Only about a month left until it is us against Anatomy and all the others. Well I am looking forward to meeting all of you this fall. See you on August 27th.

Welcome Melissa. It is nice to see some other members of the class discovering SDN. I too am living in the traditional hall, only on the third floor. I too am not excited about living the dorm life again, but I think the convenience of having everything right there at our disposal will be nice. I did a count yesterday and there are now 48 days until classes officially start. It is almost that time, when the real fun begins. I have to get back to work. Only 13 more days of that left. I can't wait.

JOSHUA

Its definitely good to see some more people from CCOM. Josh, good luck with the rest of your work. By the way, what kind of work do you do? As for me, I only have four shifts left, then the cruise, then visit my parents, then pack, then make the drive to Chicago. Im staying in the city for a couple of days for a triathlon on the 25th , then move in day is the 27th, I think. I would definitely be up for meeting with you guys anytime around there to get to know some people and start off the year with some friends. Things have been pretty good, its been nice to relax a little bit before the year starts. Yesterday I climbed two 14,000 foot peaks in colorado with some work friends. It was hard as hell, but very rewarding when you get to the top. You can see for miles. I will remember times like that when I'm up to my ears in cadaver guts and I smell like formaldehyde. Take it easy you guys, welcome Melissa, see you soon (48 days).

I work in a research lab at the University of Chicago. I would have liked to quit working earlier, but not working doesn't help pay the $600 rent and all the other bills. It has been nice though. I like the job but am ready for it to be over. It just figures though that within the past couple of weeks things have been working very well. I have struggled to fine tune two different assays and one just started working well for me about a month ago and the other just started working about 1-2 weeks ago. So, now I am cramming to get some usual results that can be published. But, I told them I was leaving a couple of months ago and they hired me knowing my intentions of wanting to attend medical school so things are cool. I am planning on going home one last time and then out to California for a week to visit family. Should be fun and will be a low cost trip, which is always good. Well, if it works out and people will be around some of us should try and get together before school starts. Maybe we can work something out closer to the time.

JOSH

Don't have anything all that exciting to say, just one day closer to class. Josh- any thoughts about continuing your research at ccom? Or is that sort of impractical due to materials, study time, etc? The thought of trying to do anything on top of studying seems pretty unrealistic to me. Im sure im going to have to use almost every spare moment to try and learn stuff. Do you guys know the nature of our early clinical experience? Do we go and shadow family docs? I think any early exposure helps. The more comfortable we are talking to patients at the early stages, the better we are going to be during rotations. Im definitely going to join the EM club. It sounds like they do a lot of clinics and stuff to get practice for things like suturing, IV's, etc. Hey, anyone watching the tour de France? Lance is on his way to a fourth victory. Im going to miss the hills of colorado when im in illinois. take it easy-

today i received a packet of interesting stuff from student services. the packet included the academic calender, information about organizations and the white coat ceremony. i'm definitely considering to join the EM club and the many other clubs offered on campus. sounds like fun and i bet they'll offer rewarding experiences. also, our white coat ceremony for this year will be on september 27th. it seems pretty cool except i think it's kind of strange that they decided to do it in the middle of september instead of during the first days of school. oh well, i hope that everyone is having a fabulous summer -- enjoy it while it lasts! :D

Whats up everybody. Did anyone else have trouble with their password when this site got updated? I had to register again. Oh yea, my screename used to be "Grkbuckeye", for all those that knew me. Anyway, I will be moving to Downers Grove on August 10th. First I'm gonna take a nice two week long vacation to California. If any of you are going to be up there by then and want to get together, let me know. Hey Wasabi, does the calendar tell you when fall quarter finals are over? I'm trying to see if I'll be able to come back for the OSU-Michigan game!! As you can tell, I got my priorities in line!

our schedule looks something like this:

fall quarter : september 3 - november 15
fall quarterly exams : november 11 - 15
break? : november 15 - november 25

winter quarter : classes resume on november 25 - february 21
thanksgiving break : november 28 - 29
winter recess : december 25 - january 5
winter quarterly exams : february 17 - 21

spring recess : february 22 - march 2

spring quarter : march 3 - june 8
spring quarterly exams : may 12 - 16

i'm planning to be on campus on the first day i could move my stuff to my dorm room (august 27). anyone else planning to live in the LLC dorms? i visited the place a few weeks ago and it's really nice. the rooms were actually larger than expected, they included space for a large tv, a desk, a dresser, a wardrobe unit and a decent size closet. i guess it's ideal for anyone who is planning to bring a lot of clothes and whatnot. on each floor, there is a kitchen area which includes a toaster oven, a stove, a medium sized refridgerator and a sink. oh, and the washer and dryer was included in the kitchen area. on the first floor, there's a really nice commuter lounge area, along with a few lecture halls and the bookstore. compared to my previous dorm experiences at uiuc, i think that this place is pretty nice and convenient. :D

oh, has anyone submitted their immunization forms yet? i havne't sent mine out yet but i think i should sooner or later. oh, and if anyone happens to have graduated from a school which included medical services for students, i totally suggest you to have all of your shots and titers drawn there. i attended uic and i received all of my shots and titers drawn for free. the only problem was that they weren't able to obtain all the quantitative results i needed, so i do need to pay approximately $80 when i get my titers drawn at ccom. if anyone doesn't have access to university medical services like myself, i suggest waiting to get your titers drawn at ccom instead. at most clinics, it costs approximately $400 - $500 to get them done and i think it only costs about $280 to get them completed at ccom.

well, i hope that everyone is having a pleasant vacation. see you later.

I am sending in my letter of withdrawal for CCOM. I am heading to CWRUSOM. Hope this will make someone happy.
