CCOM Class of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey guys, i'm working on getting some books for the year....what classes do we have first quarter.....actually, how does the whole year look in regards to what classes we have?? thanks!! 😛

Hey JunkInthetrunk, when are we supposed to have books by? Everyone is talking books and I have no idea. Did we get a class book list yet?

don't worry about getting books yet.....

in fact....don't get books yet! it won't do you any good. especially because classes are taught from the notes that are handed out to you. you will hardly need to buy books at all. and the ones that you do need to buy you can get once school starts.

really the only books you need for first quarter are netter's anatomy atlas and a cadaver atlas. I think Rowan is the author of the cadaver book.

Your classes first quarter are, (if i can remember!)

Biochem
Gross Anatomy
Histology
intro to clinical med
interdisciplinary course ( joke )
OMM

i might be forgetting one there.....

but your main courses are biochem, anatomy and histo....

for biochem there is Lippincott's Biochemistry. You don't need it for class, but come time for studying for boards it's a useful book.

Histo....you just need to go to class to see the slides, and then look in the different histo atlas' which are on reserve in the library. I really don't feel you need to buy one.

If you buy books ahead of time.......IT WILL DO YOU NO GOOD! just relax for the rest of the summer and i'm sure i'll meet most of you soon.

kristopher

Hey Kris,

How is Cali...having a good summer? This is John from Boston!
If anyone has questions about OMM Kris is your man. He is a master at it!

i just wanted to know cuz it will take like 3 weeks for books to get here from amazon and half.com. i bought a few of the ones i know i'll use, like lippincott biochem and anatomy atlases, etc....and even some HY books for boards. am i a gunner???? hahahaha, shizzle, we haven't even started class yet and i'm a gunner already........ :scared: +pity+

:laugh:

Hi Mc^2, I'm not sure if there will be time but I would like to throw a few pots here and there. I haven't looked at any places in the area but I have my own wheel, no kiln though. Send me some pics of your stuff if you have any. I got in so late I was starting to make other plans. I was thinking of teaching ceramics. J.S.

No way JS!! That's awesome! So, I take it you are living off campus? (Although a wheel in the dorms would be pretty fun.) Maybe we can find a studio to use while in school. Let me know if you find anything. Most of my stuff is functional (bowls, mugs, pitchers) although I do have some hand-built stuff. Do you have pics of your work?

Hi again everyone. 🙂

I have just been poked and prodded and working on getting my titers for my immunizations finished! I don't know if I'll make the deadline. :scared: Stupid mailman lost my mail so I never got that information in the mail.

Oh...and how on earth will I sleep on a twin-sized bed in those dorms?! 😱 I'm a California Amazon woman...I need space to sleep and to fit on the bed! 😕

I hopw everyone is still enjoying the little bit left of summer.

Oh...and ignore SM-Ucla tech...he doesn't know what he's talking about 🙄

as you all have just found out.....John is almost as sarcastic as I am!

OMM?!?!? what the hell does that stand for? :laugh:

John.....Cali has been great.....the weather has been unbelievably perfect all summer. But I'm looking forward to getting back. I just talked to Adam today about the wedding and bachelor party!

See you in a couple more weeks!

just got the first tuition bill in the mail.........does anyone know when the loan $$$ is available (stafford loans)??? :scared:

I think the money gets disbursed to the school first. If you have filled out the direct deposit form it should hit your bank account sometime in mid-September if I'm remembering correctly. They said to be prepared for the first month of living expenses when we arrive. Thank God I just sold one of my cars today. 👍

as for the picture...i'll post it up as soon as i get back...i've taken plenty pictures here....

oh ya....i am going to be living in the LLC...but do you guys think its too late to change to a trad dorm? Or is there anyone with a trad dorm that wants to trade with a LLC?

Loans will be available usually around the second week of class. The tuition bill is just paperwork. (unless you are one of the few who are actually flipping the bill yourself.)

i have stafford loans that are covering this all, but the statement says the payment is due 9/7/04. will the loans be there in time or should i ask for a part-time loan from my parents until the loans come??

Maybe you can charge it to your credit card first. I am sure the bill for your credit card doesn't come in until sometime in October by which time you'll have your loan money in. Plus, you can earn mileage points or whatever specials your credit card gives you. 👍

yippeee....i emailed the fin-aid office, and they said all loans get disbursed 8/30.....a week before the money is "due"....YAY!!!! 😀

if you filled out the fin-aid form through midwestern (i think it's sallie mae or something) the loans go straight to the school. then if there's any remaining balance it comes back to you. WEE!

Yay, thanks Jiit! I just called them since I'm being compulsive and panicky (that's rare for me I tell ya 😉 ), and they told me that it will be automatically deducted and the balance enters my account at the end of september. Whew....what a relief...

Now, I have to work on those immunizations.

on that "certificate of immunization" thing they want us to fill out, do we REALLY need a doctor to sign the last page??? that means i have to go into the doc just to have him sign that...what a waste. i'm gettin my titers done at the school though in a few weeks.....how bout u?

I had them done last Tuesday but the results take over a week and a half for the results!!! 😱 I thought the deadline in that orientation packet for all fo that stuff is due this FRIDAY, AUGUST 13!

I just called the wellness center about it, and they said that as long as I mailed in that certificate of immunity with whatever I had done even if it's not complete, that I was still okay to meet the deadline. Whew.

I've just been folloiwng up on all the last minute errands before school. I just had my transcripts send out last week. I HAVE to do all these minor things before schools starts because I live out in CA.

So what are you doing these last few weeks before school starts?

So, are we gonna stir up some chaos and trouble for the class of 2008 or what? 😉

scoobs, i think we're dominating the ccom 2008 forum! BWHAHAHA! 😀 and yes, i'm planning on making med school fun and enjoyable for all 😉

son of a nutcup, i forgot that that packet was due friday........i hope i can send it without the dr sig, and have a copy signed for when school starts......arrrrrrgggggg :scared:

Yayah, baby...taking the class by storm....junk in the trunk forward....since my junk is way bigger than my best foot forward! 😱

I know...tell me about these deadlines sneaking up on me... :scared: I've called housing, financial aid, and admissions all the time and my doctors and schools....

You should be okay with the immunization form. When I talked to the wellness center just now, she sounded like they just wanted to have some sort of record on file with them, and whatever else needs to be finished, she said I could just bring over with me.

*proceeds to rip out any hair that might be left on my head

Junk, didn't you say you amazoned all the text books?
Were you able to find everything? and what did you get?
thanks

lets see here.....i got high yield neuroanatomy, wheater's functional histology, first aid for the usmle, rapid interpretation of ekg's, lippincott's biochem, high yield embryology, high yield behavioral sciences, clinical micro made ridiculously simple, and costanzo's anatomy. i got all of those either on half.com or amazon.com....for really great prices. i ordered them this early so i could have them by the time school starts (sometimes they take 3 weeks to get here). lots of those books i got just for studying for the boards....who knows, some i might never need, but i got em anyways. 🙄

Much Appreciated Junk,
Thought I might actually try to be more organized and start relatively early. I will begin my hunt now and hopefully have as much success as you did. Enjoy whats left of the summer.

Billy

P.S. I'm from texas does anyone know when its going to start to get cold in Illinois?

tomorrow its going to be 65 🙁 SNIFF!!!! but seriously, until late october you can still get away with not wearing a jacket

Where in Texas, Billygoat? I'm moving from Norman myself. It'll be nice to escape the heat for a while. Anyone on here in Bldg C of the Trad dorms? See everyone soon.

Yup I'm in building C on the first floor! 🙂 👍

Me too! 👍 Oh, and I couldn't agree more with your previous post about twin beds. :scared: I need to start piling junk on my bed now until it's twin sized. Well, great!! A few weeks to go!

scubs! i pm'ed u! 😀

Since I was debating on the comforter size nad bed-size, since I am the California Amazon woman, I found an amazing full/queen sized comforter and bought it even though it's oversized for the twin.

I plan on upgrading to a queen-sized bed by thrid year when we'll have to be living off campus in apartments so I'm living the economical, starving med student lifestyle right now. 👍

So let's begin with online orientations sessions:

My name is Cat. I hate the Lakers.

Next....your turn.

hehe....

my name is Jessie, i like kittens, long walks on the beach, and head-butting guys at bars :laugh:

I'm Justin. I also hate the Lakers, but I love the Kings. I like going to see live music. I drink J&B scotch. I play african hand drums. I'm from Illinois originally but have been marooned in Oklahoma for 19 years.

😀

Oooooh yeah, let's here it for building C. WOOOHOOOO!!! C is where its at. BoogieNights will have to give those from Building C a discount for raising the roof. Yeah. But seriously, hello everyone my name is Mike. Ah, can we say CUBS, the Bulls, and the da Bears. No Laker fans in building C😉 Hey Scubs, do you actually SCUBA dive? Anyone else certified? No one I know is brave enough that I know. You can dive in the midwest up till November 1st usually depending on your threshold for discompfort. As for the question about weather, Junk was right. It really doesn't get too cold till mid-October. Jacket is necessary after that. Second week in December starts the winter coat thing and then January starts the, "I need to transfer to another med school, its so cold time!" You will then feel you toes by late February possibly March.

i scuba dive!!! haha....i just did it in st. lucia on my honeymoon....down to 70 feet on one of the dives! it was awesome!!!!! 😀 😀 👍

Hi everyone, I'm Karen (duh) :idea: Big Cubs fan and even bigger Bears fan! (I say that b/c I admit, though I'd root for the Cubs, I'd never watch any baseball games til last year. With the Bears, been there through good n' bad times!) As a mid-school year treat, I'm going to the Bears vs. Packers game 😀 Hopefully there's no cheeseheads in our class 😛 And I agree, boo to Lakers!

Yup! 🙂

However, I will not have ANY room for my dive gear since I'm packing some of the essentials in my cross country dive, plus, I don't have a dry suit. I haven't been since last summer since my ears were being weird on me with the whole equalizing for whatever reason. 😕 I'm gonna definitely make an attempt next summer though. 👍

hmmm....I think I'm gonna match screenames to real names. :idea:

scubadiva = Cat
j-trunk = Jessie
karen06 = 😕 I'm still trying to figure out her name. 😀
mc7 = Mike
billygoat = Patrick
zenblunder = Justin edit: confused smiley has been removed 👍
HoosierDO = Tovah
jdanie2 = Jeff
lari29 = Lari

MSII's
SM-Ucla tech = kris 🙂
Areitman = Aaron

Okay...so I had a little extra time on my hands. 😳 I might as well do this now than when I'm trying to procrastinate during the school year.

Side note: I got threatened for cheering for the Kings at a bar during playoffs because I was being obnoxious since the Kings won (that particular game). i can safely cheer anti-Lakers in Chicago. 👍 but I am a Dodgers fan
*dodges baseballs being thrown....but it's still a toss up....I can be convinced to cheer for the Cubs 😉

Hey scuba,
check my post on the previous page...I'm Justin. Fellow Lakers hater and King fan. Anyway, Good to meet you all, I look forward to meeting for real soon.

Oh, by the way... 👎 Cubs 👎

Sox all the way 👍 👍

But the Bears are good...with their first round pick being Tommie Harris of The University of Oklahoma.

:laugh: sorry Texas :laugh: :meanie:

Thanks zen! 😀

I edited and fixed that for ya. 😉

I'm Andy. I hate sports. 😉

I also have an incredibly stupid question. Since we are on the quarter system, that means there are 4 quarters in one year? The reason I'm asking is that I'm trying to calculate the cost of the on campus apartment by MONTH and all I have is a price by quarter.

Yes, there are four quarters in one year. However, our first year will only consist of three quarters since we get next summer off (unless, of course, if we have to retake any classes - hopefully not!!). There is a schedule on the Midwestern Univ website that shows exactly when the quarters start/end with the end of the school year happening in May. So, I would divide your housing costs by nine months and you should have somewhat of an accurate figure of cost/month.

I was surprised to see me included in the screen names since I have posted inconsistently. Thanks.

How does one attach a picture to your post?

I can't believe how soon the summer will be over and we'll be hard at work. I look forward to meeting all of you and want to get this year started. Drive safe to all those making cross-country journeys and I'll see you soon.

Jeff

Well, since I have ADD and am OCD half the time, I scrolled through pages until I got tired of doing it, and matched usernames to real names. :laugh:

Oh, and j-trunk posting a picture doesn't help unless you TELL him HOW to post! 😛 :laugh:

and to j, when you post, there are options below....look below....for

"Attach files" in blue
Click "Manage attachments" and then upload your pic. I think there's a max to the image size, but am not sure what it is.

and jessie, you're smokin' hot chica 😉

their are only 3 quarters each year. Not 4. 3 quarters are roughly similar to 2 semesters.

Years 3 and 4 are different because they are clinical years. So you are not on a quarter system. It's comprised of rotations which generally run anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks at a time.
