CCOM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey guys, quick question, I did a search on this thread but couldn't seem to find an answer.

I applied to this school, submitted my secondary, and my status shows up as:

  • Needed For Application to be Complete
    • Physician Recommendation Letter
    • Recommendation Letter
My rec letters are coming from my pre-med committee, the DO letter, can that be given at time of interview or post interview as well? I thought I read that somewhere,

Regards

you will not get an interview offer until your application is complete which means you need your DO letter before then. you can always bring a second one with you to the interview (provided it is in a sealed envelope signed across back) but your application will not be reviewed until they have your LORs.
if you think they should have the committee letter, then i would give them a buzz. sometimes things end up in the wrong place or they do not update the portal properly.

Just got my rejection letter after submitting my secondary in early July. Oh well I guess I saw it coming :/ Best of luck to those of you still in the game!

.So I sent out my secondary app in early august and I just received a rejection invite letter yesterday. Im pretty much figured that out a month ago... I just think its funny that they bothered to send a letter so late. Good thing I have an interview at other schools. With their poor response time, I would reconsider this school anyways. Im not here to bash. I justt wanted to share my story.

Sorry to hear that. What were ur stats if u don't mind sharing?

Thanks. Best of luck in ur other interviews. My mcat is a bit low for mwu. Do u mind sharing ur stats? I submitted early july as well

26Q 3.5 cgpa 3.7 sgpa. My mcats were a little low but i didn't think they were terribly low.

to the best of my knowledge we do not have any sort of note-taking or scribe service

When I was at the interview (I'm 99% sure this was at CCOM) the students had like 300 pages of notes that the professor provided. Most of the students said they didn't buy any books except an anatomy atlas and maybe a couple random ones, and they just used the "book" of notes the professor provided.

I just submitted my secondary application today. I know it is late and my stats are pretty average (3.8 science, 28P MCAT) but my dad and grandfather both went to CCOM and I would be the 4th D.O. in my family. Any guesses on my chances of getting in?

Chances are good. I had same mcat as you did basically, with lower gpa and I got an interview from them. However, I declined their interview. Good luck!

Hey All, I was just working on the secondary application questions before I received it and was wondering if there is a word or character limit. Your help is very much appreciated!

This is correct.
However, there is no one taking notes in class and posting them, which is what I think of when I think of a scribe or note taking service.
And yes our note packets are huge but they are very complete

This is actually really fast. Most schools don't even bother to send you a letter until the spring.

How were ur extracurriculars and letters of recommendation? My mcats even lower than ur but both my cumulative and science gpa is a 3.76. Everything on my app is solid except my score. How were ur secondary essays and ur aacomas ps?

Are the note packets in-line with material you're expected to know for exams?

for 98% of questions usually yes.
some professors add things in class that are not in notes, but this is few and far between.
if you know the material in the note packets you are golden.

So with these giant notebooks, do you follow along class looking at powerpoints as the professors teach or do the professors just stand/walk around and teach?

Do students bring laptops with them to class?

Thanks!

I attended a class and most students did not have laptops but were following the powerpoint with their packets.

yes students bring laptops with them to class, esp more so second year as we have more things posted ahead of time than we did first year. we also have a class this year which we do not have a note packet and is strictly powerpoint based so that requires us to being our laptops to class.

the professors base their power points they present in class off the notes which you buy. a majority of departments are pretty good about posting power points in class on blackboard but some professors do not.

I interviewed 10/23. Found up about acceptance online, and then like two weeks later got a letter (not sure the dates on these).

Do you remember how long after you interviewed that you found out you were accepted (through the online portal)? I'm interviewing next week on the 25th and thought maybe my timing on finding out their decision might be similar to yours?

Found out I was accepted 10-05 (my portal might have changed earlier than that, I wasn't checking it daily), interview 9-23

I am just preparing for potential interviews while waiting on my secondary apps. I was wondering if anyone has read any good books about DO's, medicine, and health care and feels they would be valuable for essays or interviews. I have purchased The DO's by Norman Gevitz. Thank you very much and congrats to all those accepted so far!

This book called "One"- I bought it at starbucks, it's a little brown book filled with inspirational quotes. Also, U.S. News medical school ranking has a few good intro pieces. Finally, that book ACOMAS releases for applicants, the one that lists all the schools, the intro pieces there are great too.

Same predicament here. It's a tough decision to make for sure.

Hey All, I was just working on the secondary application questions before I received it and was wondering if there is a word or character limit. Your help is very much appreciated!

Character limit- something like 3500? I completed summer though, so I might be off, but there is a limit for sure.

My extracurriculars are ok, but i never had a chance to do a lot since I had to work and pay my way through school. I worked as CNA for the last 6 years and I worked on the weekends so that i can go to school during the week. I did some volunteering and some research. I assume my secondaries were good along with my aacomas ps because i got invited to AZCOM as well as two other schools.

i think the limit is 1500 characters per essay. atleast thats what i have written down

Interviewed here this past week and loved it! People are so friendly, interview was not super-pressured as well. They asked questions to really get to know you, and they answer all of your questions thoroughly. I do hope i get accepted here.

How long does it take to hear about an II from CCOM?

Interview Invite.

Some people get them quickly, others wait a long time. No way of telling.

Correct, Just as a reference, i got mine about a week after i was officially "complete"

And I got mine about 2 months after. Many people were complete after me and had lower stats. So it really is a crapshoot. I eventually got one though.

I don't understand the point of these questions. There is no way of telling how busy the Adcom's are at any given point. There is probably many variables that affect when you get an interview invite, if applicable.

Most schools have an "average" time frame of which most people have gotten interview invites. Thus the question. Get it?

Not really, but that's ok. People who applied really early often had to wait longer for certain schools because they didn't even start reviewing secondaries for a month after they sent them. Holidays, amount of applications received are all variables that will account for this time period.

any one interviewing monday? where you guys staying?

Thank you very much!!!

It was a tough choice, but I declined CCOM's offer. I need to get back to my homestate.

Good luck to everyone and thanks m2three for the lovely tour! 🙂

Hopefully we 10/25ers will get a decision on our apps by the end of this week! They generally make decisions on Friday, right?

While I would LOVE for this to be the case (and everything is still a possibility), I did decide to call last week. The lovely woman in admissions informed me that the committee was not scheduled to meet until the 3rd week of November. Now grated this timeframe wasn't chiseled in stone, it does seem rather likely. I would like to inform everyone on this board that even if the committee meets they may not "release" their decisions for some time to follow. While this is unlikely, with he holiday encroaching....it is possible. I don't mean to burst anyone's bubble...CCOM is my #1 choice, and I'd LOVE to hear from them sooner, but we may need to wait a tiny bit longer.

Congrats to all who have been accepted, and good luck to all of us in waiting

Is it late now to be complete? I just got the complete email this morning...but I figure they would have still at least 100 seats left?

Kinda depends on ur stats. If u have great stats then no ur not too late. I actually have been complete all the way since july 8th and still haven't heard anything. So it all just depends...seems like they interview all the people with high mcats first. I think ccom emphasizes the mcat score and weighs it a ton more than the overall and science gpa

interview invite today!! 🙂🙂🙂 scheduled for jan 9th. if any1 is canceling an earlier interview please PLEASE let me know! thanks!

i was complete 10/31. IS. 28MCAT. 3.87cGPA & 3.97sGPA.

u should send them an update letter and express your interest as well. that helped out my friend last cycle.. GOOD LUCK!

I already sent them a letter of interest. What's an update letter? Yeah I think my mcat is giving me problems most def. Its way below their average of a 28, even though my gpa compensates for it

there are no dates after friday in november
and there are not that many in december before we are off for two weeks for break

Scheduled an interview yesterday for Dec. 6th. (28P MCAT 3.87 scGPA and submitted my secondary about a week ago) Does anyone know what the interviews are like or if we're even allowed to talk about it on here?

CONGRATS! and lucky you.. what time did you schedule yday if u don't mind me asking? i didn't check my email until 8 last night so may be that is why all the earlier dates were gone by then..

also on the top of this site you'll see an interview feedback tab.. there you can find interview questions asked and stuff about each school

No, I believe those of us who interviewed 10/24 may have a little longer wait.

That goes double for us who interviewed the 24th.
