Hi all. I'm trying to decide between CCOM and VCOM-Virginia. I'm interested in pursuing ortho and I'd like to make the best decision that would help me towards this goal. For reference, I'm a VA resident.

CCOM
Pros
  • Urban area, access to better clinical rotations and research opportunities?
  • More established
  • AFAIK no mandatory lecture attendance or daily dress code

Cons
  • If I understand correctly, 5 slots for selective/elective rotations
  • No support system in the Midwest, would be long-distance with SO since his job ties him to the VA/DC area
  • Midwest heavy Match list, self selection vs poor strength matching outside region?
  • Expensive
  • Not actually sure if there actually better clinical research opportunities

VCOM-Virginia
Pros
  • Closer to family/friends/SO
  • Would prefer to match on east coast, better regional connections?
  • ~$100k cheaper over 4-year CoA
  • 6 slots for selective/elective rotations

Cons
  • Less established
  • Associated with VA Tech but not sure if that translates into better research opportunities for med students, research on interview day seemed very basic science heavy
  • Dress code, 80% mandatory attendance (subject to change?)
  • Concerns about being a LGBT POC in a rural area

Summary: I'm leaning towards CCOM at the moment. I do put somewhat of a premium on support systems but I don't think that's enough to outweigh the benefits of CCOM. On the other hand, I'm likely overestimating the strength of CCOM and would like third-party advice on the relative strengths of the programs. Thank you!

I'd go with VCOM for less debt. I don't think there's that much difference between the two schools to justify 150K+ additional debt.

You're looking at two DO schools. You're not going to be blowing anyone out of the water with your research. VCOM does have a strong focus on primary care. Not sure about CCOM. As someone said above, $150k less is worth having a support system nearby and connections in the region you would like to match.

Both are solid schools, but I think another aspect that most premeds don't look at enough is curriculum in regards to the exam schedule. VCOM has 2 exams a week on average throughout the year, sometimes even 3. A schedule like that could lead to burnout if you aren't comfortable with it so just keep that in mind when you make your decision in addition to the other relevant factors.
