Hey all,

I'm a recently graduated college senior. I'm trying to gauge what my chances are for getting into the big 4 as far as the Caribbean. I have a 2.8 gpa and a 30R mcat score.

I'm also thinking of applying to AUA as I heard they recently got recognition in California as well.

If anyone has any insight on this that would be very helpful. Thanks!

Your chances are quite good. Ross will take low GPA applicants. Best of luck.

I agree with the poster above. Ross is typically the school that accepts lower G.P.A's. You probably won't have a shot at getting into SGU. Have you considered retaking some classes. D.O schools do grade forgiveness as long as you take the same number of hours or more in the replacemet class. If you can get your G.P.A to a 3.0, you have a shot (Thats if you are interested in D.O)

Thanks guys for the heads up. I was wondering if anyone had any insight on if AUA is a possibility with those scores?

Hey Plasmamorris,

If I were you, I'd check out an SMP program in the States. I went to the BMS program at Rosalind Franklin last year with stats just like yours (2.9 uGPA, 29 MCAT) and a year later I now have a master's degree and am holding an acceptance letter to an american med school. There are other great programs as well, like the one at EVMS. I only see the road for IMGs becoming more difficult, and your stats are exactly where they should be for an SMP program. That's only my $0.02.

:luck:Best of luck,

Unz

So.... what's your plan for next year?

Sorry - I've been pretty busy with interviews the last week or so. Basically at the moment I'm leaning towards going to an SMP. I have an interview for Ross coming up too. I haven't really made a decision either way.

So many decisions. Thanks for all your help though. I really do appreciate it. Sorry again for not posting back.

I might end up with the same GPA as you did from university of toronto. I havent wrote mcat yet but I will be writing that next year for sure. Chances of getting into Ross with 2.8 or around that should be good right ?

Try for an SMP. If you do well in it, you should be able to get into a US med school. If that fails, then its time to think about Ross.

Yeah I was recently accepted into The Commonwealth Medical College's MBS program which is an SMP. So I think at the very least I will be going there and looking to do well this coming year. Thanks for the advice Top Gun.

saurabh16 - from what I've heard Ross will take lower GPAs. I believe I read somewhere that they accepted students with GPAs as low as 2.7. I think you have to do well in your interview and have a decent MCAT though. It's all a balancing act once you get to the caribbean applicant pool - either high GPA and low MCAT or low GPA and high MCAT. I think it's better to have a high GPA and low MCAT bc then you can at least study harder for the MCAT and retake it then shoot for US/Canadian MD schools. Lower GPAs tend to follow you throughout the process and are more difficult to shake in this process. If Ross is where you want to go though, a GPA like 2.8 should not hurt you too bad.

Don't go to the Caribbean. It's a tourist trap for hopeful premeds.

50% attrition after year one
45% step1 passing rate
49.1% residency matching into the US based on 2011 NRMP

That's steep odds and huge consequences if you aren't one of the very few who have a happy ending in the Caribbean

I had the same numbers as you and you'll get into both SGU and Ross no problem. Neither schools are huge sticklers for numbers...

But like everyone here has said, go to a U.S. school at all cost. I was a bit older than the rest of my entering class, which is why i decided to go to Ross, to save time. But now I'm definitely wishing i took some post bac classes and waited. Especially if you want to a competitive specialty, it's getting harder and harder to match, even into Internal Med.

Also for those following the thread interested on the outcome of my applications based on my stats - I was accepted to Ross today. However, I was also accepted into an SMP and I will be attending The Commonwealth Medical College in August. Thank you everyone who gave me advice and good luck to all of you who are applying/intend on applying.

You 100% made the right decision

I can't believe I started this thread almost a year ago. For anyone that gave me advice - I really wanted to reach out and thank you. I was accepted about 2 months ago into TCMC's MD Class of 2017. It really was the absolute right decision to stay stateside and try to get into a US school. It worked out and I just wanted to say thank you to those who persuaded me to go the SMP route.

Congrats! Just wondering, does TCMC's MBS program have some sort of requirement for its students within the program that more or less guarantees them spots into the med school after they complete it (i.e. if they keep a 3.0 GPA or above, they are accepted into the medical school)?

Thank you!

As for your question - the MBS program doesn't have any requirement or guarantee for it's students to matriculate into the MD program. They try and take the best students overall. The number tends to fluctuate from year to year. Generally though they see about 30% of students from the program matriculate into the MD program.

It's a tough program and I wouldn't advise it for everyone. I did exceptionally well in the program and I believe that definitely made this entire thing work out for me, but otherwise there wasn't any guarantee even if I got a 4.0 in the program. You have to absolutely do your best in the program. Roughly, I'd say people who had a 3.6 GPA in the program tended to get interviews. Higher undergrad stats that also affected if you would get an interview.
