Hey all,

I am a nontraditional student going on 3-4 years out of college now. I will be 28 with a wife, 2 kids in elementary school, and hoping for a 3rd.

I have a 3.51 GPA at my most recent university in undergrad, combined cumulative GPA of 3.42 including my initial community college years. MCAT score is exactly at 500. Also worth noting, I am a white male living in the Pacific Northwest

I have years experience working as a scribe in the busiest emergency department in the state with over 8,000 hours. Personally have written closing in on around 40,000 charts from that many patient interactions. I have some volunteering experience through the local free clinic in town, and even went on a medical missionary trip in South America.

My GPA and MCAT fall within the standards of Howard University, but I have read that the school tends to accept more diverse students. Specifically pulled from their website: African-American male students, Latino and Hispanic students, Students from socio-economically/environmentally disadvantaged backgrounds, Female faculty, and Female senior administrators

Given the information provided....what are my chances?

It’s because Howard is a historically black university. I’m not sure about your chances but that answers why they accept more minority students (namely Black Americans) and/or those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Your chances at Howard are slim to none. They matriculated less than 10 white individuals last year, and have a very specific mission. Your best chances with your stats would be DO school, maybe your state MD schools (but again chances are slim to none). Best thing would be to retake the MCAT. Your GPA/MCAT are below the 10th percentile of matriculants at about every medical school. If you decide to not retake the MCAT and apply you should apply to as many DO schools as possible and I'd throw in these MD as reaches

Loma Linda
Rosalind Franklin
Loyola
Medical College of Wisconsin
Oakland Beaumount
St. Louis University
Penn State
West Virginia

Again you should have like 15+ DO schools you apply to

Concentrate on a DO application and apply broadly. I suggest all these schools:
PNWU-COM
ICOM
ACOM
ARCOM
BCOM
LMU-DCOM
UP-KYCOM
WVSOM
UIWSOM
VCOM (all 3 schools)
CUSOM
NYIT-Arkansas
LECOM
PCOM Georgia and South Georgia
For MD your only realistic option may be your state public schools.

Thanks for all the responses everyone. To address the people saying I should consider DO school, I have already submitted my app to 26 schools. Now I am trying to pinpoint which (if any) MD schools to apply to. I will be applying to one of my state’s MD programs and am tempting branching out into other states, but I don’t want to just be lighting money on fire.

The GPA-MCAT grid shows that applicants with your stats have a 14% chance for a MD acceptance. The majority of that 14% are accepted to their state public schools. Your chances for an acceptance to an OOS school are less than 10%.

If my stats are much higher than the 10-90th percentile for admission, would they not look at my application? Also, I'm an international student and I saw they accept 5 students last year!

Chances ZERO for Howard and for MD.

You do not fit Howard's mission. End of story.

Whatever non-URMs get accepted to the HBCs have demonstrated commitment of service to communities of color.

Internationals tend to be superstars, and/or attendees of the UG school for the med school.
Chances best with the DO schools that accept internationals (of which there are about 20)

Idk man, you have a lot of clinical hours...but 0% seem to be geared towards serving disadvantaged and POC communities. Apply to your state MD’s and DO’s, but SMPs may be your only hope.

Retaking the MCAT and doing better will go far into getting IIs at U WA and WSU for OP.

Dannggg, like that, Goro? LOL. You keep it so real! I’m cracking up, but I so appreciate the no sugar coating.

Agreed. If this guy was, say, a lawyer that started a successful national foundation to provide legal representation to African-American defendants, it might be a different story altogether.
