Hello,

I’ve been accepted to both D.O schools and am very confused on what I should decide. I was hoping some people would be able to give me some insight. I would love to hear from current students if anyone is here!!

CHSU
Pros
  • deposit ($2,000) is partially refundable
  • In CA (I live in CA)
  • Medical Spanish required
  • Rotations in Fresno/CA (~1 hr away maximum)
  • Seems to have more community connections?
have students from ATSU and KCU rotate at their sites while waiting for their first class to be able to go to sites.
Cons
  • Total estimated yearly cost: $93, 502
  • Slightly newer than ICOM (first class graduates 2024)
  • Private loans until 4th year

ICOM
Pros
  • Total estimated yearly cost: $78,792
  • Near Boise
  • Federal loans from 2yr and beyond.

Cons
  • Rotation sites can be out of state (WY, ND, SD, neighboring states)
  • Further away from home

Preferences/Additional Details:
  • Right now, I am staying open minded as both are new schools. I want to go into primary care eventually!
  • I am not still not sure which is better in terms of learning augmented reality or cadavers
  • Both schools only provide private loans
  • Both schools do not have a graduating class yet
  • Both schools are for-profit

I’d say $78,000 with the possibility of fed loans after 2 yrs compared to $93,000 for 4 yrs is a no brainer

Can't you get Loans from FAFSA on either of them why private loans. Or certain DO schools don't provide Federal loans .

I was accepted to ICOM and was pretty excited about going to their school. However the loan situation was a big turn off and I was accepted to a closer school that has already graduated a class. I don’t know much about the other school. However I would have felt comfortable going to ICOM. Their pass rate is pretty decent from what I remember.

I definitely agree on that. My concern is for rotations since for Boise, I would most likely have to move to another state. CHSU has all their sites in CA within an hour from campus . This is probably my biggest thing about the two schools.

yes icom I believe has a 94% pass rate 1st time

So all these DO schools in USA are for profit. Doesn't make sense.
I will be eligible for federal loans after my first year but I’ve been hearing that the interest rate for federal loans may be worse than private depending on your credit score. Any advice on which school?

OP, I would do your own research on the school. Or even reach out to current students and get their opinion. That’s what I did. People posted the above post or messages it to me multiple times and I still did my own research. If you want to be a doctor and can be sufficient on your own, either school will work.

I’ve read this already but the staff and students have been more than helpful in addressing these issues. They seem to be doing better after a couple years. My only hesitation is the rotations are far away but it seems like a safer choice than chsu since it is a much newer school.

I don’t care for California in general to much personally. The fact that CHSU is newer than ICOM I would choose ICOM. It doesn’t matter which of the two you go to as long as you are proficient yourself.

I loved ICOM from my interview to the staff and other physicians that I knew in the area didn’t seem to have to much negative things to say about the school.

Choose where you feel you fit the best. With both schools being new and it’s really a toss up and going to be on you to do well and set up connections.

I will say, ICOM already having students out on rotations, I can only see more sites being established with connections for the students in the future.

They are both even tbh. ICOM has had a bumpy start, CHSU had a less bumpy start, but if your goal is to match in California go to CHSU. Matching in California is very hard so being in state and being able to make connections is an advantage. But if you do not care where you match then both are okay schools.

I do want to match in California since my family is here and I’ve grown up here

In most cases, the call to medicine can overshadow the downsides of an institution.
TBH I think its part of this, but also part is 90% of students have no idea about the profit status of their schools when applying, or care until it affects them.
In that case, would it not matter which school?
All I will say is it will be easier to make connections being in California.

Thank you all for your input. This information is definitely helpful! I’m still a bit nervous and unsure so I’m going to check in with some of the students at each school again

Federal loans from FAFSA like Grad Plus loans don't check your credit score to give any loans. They just verify if you not defaulted .
