Having gone through this process twice now I can honestly say I used to think differently about OSU v. Cincinnati. I thought of them both as a really good schools (I was happy to be from Ohio so that I was given priority at these schools) and they really struggled to take each others' accepted students away from each other. I was always an Ohio State fan (not that matters) so I always leaned toward wanting to go to OSU. But, what I know now is that they're still both really good schools. But, OSU cares tremendously about its image, to a fault, where I think the environment there is not the best. To care so much about its image is fine, but it shouldn't come at the expense of perfectly qualified applicants FROM THE STATE OF OHIO. I went to OSU last summer after I'd been unsuccessful in my first attempt at med school applications and I was told outright that OSU is purposely trying to raise its standards to rise in rankings. And, someone else who talked to this very same person mentioned to me that in a later meeting with her, she revealed that OSU is no longer giving preference to OHIO residents. That is there is no longer a separate pile for Ohio applicants. I personally feel that if this could be proven, it could in fact be grounds for a lawsuit against Ohio State, since it is a state supported institution. At my MCO interview it was mentioned that the Ohio schools have a difficult time filling their seats with qualified Ohio residents, so that is why they have to turn more towards out of state students. Personally, I don't buy that at all. For two reasons, one, OSU told me I had the stats of many of their entering 1st year class this past year, and two because they're opening up a medical school combined with Case-Cleveland Clinic (MD/PhD degrees only, but still). So, that is my viewpoint on the Cincy v. OSU deal.
Bottomline, don't go someplace because of it's football team.
