They're not. UNE is NOT a state school. Most of their applicants are from New England, but many of us are from all around the world.

This has been discussed before... if you want all the comments, you're welcome to search. Bottom line: if you don't apply, you're guaranteed to be at a disadvantage for getting in. :laugh:

Applying to UNECOM is the same as the lotto jingle with similar odds if you're not already located in the region: "You can't win if you don't play" :meanie:
 
Well, then gasapple, there are over 1/3 of my class that "won the lotto". Me included.

You can choose who you wish to listen to: those of us who already applied, have been through it, and can look around at our classmates and give an experienced answer, or those applying now who haven't been accepted yet.

thanx for everyone's input. I am interviewing at unecom soon so i was trying to get a sense of how i would be measured against someone else with similar stats as me but from one of the new england states...

Here is some objective data (see attached), which shows 28 students matriculated from Maine and the other 93 are from out of state. Of the 93, I don't know how many are not from New England, but I would think it wise to listen to Shyrem, since s/he is a current student there.

anyone else here did not make the first round of reviews? I called admissions and was told that although my file was reviewed in the first round last week, no decision has been made on it yet...what in the world does that mean? Should I forget about this school altogether?

I haven't yet looked at the long overdue statistical post above, but I wanted to inquire - what's the actual size of your class? I was just being facetious with the UNECOM and lotto thing because I do recall looking at the breakdown last cycle and deciding that the UNECOM adcom was seriously slanted toward regional applicants, with emphasis on URMs and the other, often better gender (females) 😀.

I have also corresponded with another reliable source who's been there... what's the story then and where's the disconnect?

As an MS, have you been tasked with driving up the secondary fees for UNECOM to pay for your graduation banquet? :meanie:

Seriously, think there's a reasonable chance for those scattered throughout the nation once everything I mention is factored?

Also, a point to consider, why do so many believe the same thing about UNECOM when it's not soley word of mouth? Perhaps they should re-word things on their admissions page or more clearly state their policy... I'm not slamming UNECOM, I just think it's misleading and is a point of contention for quite a few people... what gives?

Ah, maybe it's the percentage of OOS accepted... 3.88% puts it closest to the state-supported schools so it's quite possible that UNECOM gets lumped into that category. Evidently, there is a smaller percentage, likely due to class size, and therefore less of a chance for the typical applicant - maybe that combined with the wording on the UNECOM admissions page (or the AACOM map - I forget which) leads people to believe it's a leap...

Nothing against UNECOM but the acceptance numbers aren't AS GOOD as some of the schools... that's all. I'm sure it's a great school and I was looking at adding it today so this discussion is definitely valid.

It's all relative and we're talking probability - at least that's what I weigh out. I'm at the point where I'm tired of flushing $$$ for less of a chance based on the numbers. I like the odds of the bigger numbers, that's all...

Not really - at least for the first part! Don't worry about the cryptic responses from the admissions offices. Trust me, I know it's hard not to over-analyze everything at this stage. You're probably fine, so do your best not to let it get you down. For all you know, your app is still making the rounds. 👍

More than 2,500 applications were received by UNECOM during the 2004-2005 application cycle. 120 students will begin their medical studies at UNECOM on August 1.
Nearly half of UNECOM students are from New England. Another 30% are from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. There are more women than men in UNE's College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM).

= 24 seats for "all others" and let's not forget - there are "more women" in here somewhere...

So it's as good as a state school for those of you who are outside of the region...

You can't win if you don't pay, err, I mean play!

UNECOM's FAQ website says 60% from New England with another 20% from the northeastern states which only leaves 20% for those from other states. Then it also says there are students who have come from states like CA, CO, and FL so I'm not sure where that leaves those of us from states like TX and IL. It seems like a great school though and I definitely won't get in if I don't apply, like ShyRem said, so I'll definitely follow through with the secondary.

Thanks for repackaging what I already pointed out.

UNECOM is a good school, no doubt.

Let's not spin this people; I never said one shouldn't apply to UNECOM - I'm just saying that it's clearly not statistically even remotely advantageous for those who lie outside the aforementioned areas. The facts are clear as day on the website.

2500+ applications for roughly 24 spots... it'd be a "no brainer" for me.

I'd aim for the private schools that show little general regional preference and offer more seats in their incoming class. It's merely personal preference and a reliance on numbers to increase probability.

Going forward, individuals can view those stats and make rational decisions on their own. :idea:

I stand by my original sarcastic and generally beneficial remarks.

Do the ADCOMs frown upon having to reschedule? I have a Lecom interview on 9/14, just got the DMU email inviting me for the 14th. I dont want to cancel any yet without an acceptance. But I dont want it to look bad if I need to reschedule? Thoughts????😱

i don't think it's frowned upon to reschedule once. they understand it's interview season plus we have lives. It says in the email rescheduling once is ok 🙂

Ahh...no wonder then, mine wasn't until August.

It's interesting how some schools wait for completion of the app, and others do interview invites before secondaries (KCUMB). Not that I'm complaining, but the credit card is starting to feel some pain, and that's just with the flight tickets :laugh:

LOL...Well we know he isn't lacking interviews. Lackoftalent do you plan on going to all of those interviews? I applied to about 20 programs and I am not getting any love from the D.O. schools yet. I have a SIU(allo) interview but that is it. If I had as many interviews as "lack" I would probably fail my second to last semester in college, but I would love to have that decision.

haha..thanks you guys. 😀 I really was not anticipating this sort of response, but am going to try to make it to as many interviews as my work and budget permit. Also, I am trying to schedule interviews in similar locations around the same time, to save on $$ and time away from work. Luckily, my boss is pretty cool about me taking the time off (though I'm getting more and more scared to ask:scared:, but I have a bunch of unclaimed overtime). Anyway, I feel really lucky and excited, and hope my interviewing skills don't fail me! I hope to see you all on the interviewing trail!!!:luck::luck::luck::luck:👍
