Class of 2013!!!

😛I think that's the classic wrong answer. I remember a class where we talked about how most medical students, when faced with a question like this in the context of reading a paper or something, would get the question wrong.

EDIT: It's actually physicians, not medical students. Supposedly these papers will back up this claim: Casscells, Schoenberger, and Grayboys 1978; Eddy 1982; Gigerenzer and Hoffrage 1995

I don't remember my stats that well, but its obviously going to be more than 10 percent and less than 50 percent. That's the best I can do 3.5 years after stats

Stats... that is for next quarter...

Does anyone know how different biostats is from regular stats?

🙂 I knew it was a wrong answer. The fact is, my statistics course in undergrad was analytical chemistry.

Haha, well, I knew that 50% wasn't the right answer...any points for that? 😛

Haha yeah I was guessing somewhere around 40% so I guess I would have been close.

I finally figured out how to do it on the graphing calculator (which should save me a bit of time.)

Of course, my odds of getting off some waitlists (UCF) are better than others (Pitt). So the whole premise was pretty bogus anyway. I just wanted to get a feel for what the odds would be.

Statistics is fun!

Especially if you play poker.

Or deal in economics

GSG got the quick version of the answer 🙂 Good job.

i'm embarrassed by the paper i turned in today 🙁 oh well
I thought u graduated. What was the paper for?
Didn't you hurt yourself? You probably shouldn't be lifting if you are injured.

If you're healthy though, you don't need to stop working out, just change your workout up a bit.

For example, if you were doing 5x5s, switch to 3x3 at 110% of your max weight, if you were doing 3x10s, switch up to 5x5 or maybe 2x4 with 110-120% max weight.

The body is very capable of recovering from workouts, even daily workouts. Last year I lifted 6x a week for 4 months in a row in the spring and moved up my 1RM and 5RMs 20% during that time period (a lot given how long i've lifted)
A bunch of elite lifters claim it is important, even for young people, to have a recovery week once in a while. For what I've read people our age should have 2-2.5 recovery weeks a years, while older people (above 35 or 40) should have recovery weeks at least once every three months.

I was reading The New High Intensity Training: The Best Muscle-Building System You've Never Tried by Ellington Darden last night, and in it he mentioned this bicep workout that supposedly can make men vomit (a little melodramatic...but I get the point)....I thought that was odd b/c the method he mentioned I assumed was standard curl protocol.

It just involves doing barbell curls with 10 lbs less than max...elbows at your sides...3 seconds up...hold and sqeeze for one second...then 3 seconds down. This guy says you should only be able to complete 6 with that specific weight/and technique until you have to break form to finish out the last few reps....Once I get the book I'll post just for feedback
If this regimen is done properly it will surely cause you to puke or feel like you will puke.http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/sports_body_training_performance/meltdown_training

Who's still up?

When I used to do HST, I used to abide by the whole week off every 8 theory for strategic deconditioning or wtfever they called it, then after awhile, I just phased it out and kept lifting straight through and felt better and made better gains doing that. People are built differently but my body simply felt better having more frequent work load. If I feel really tired or tweaked or feel like my body can't handle it, then I'll skip a day, but generally I don't. In any case, I think gloryfield's lack of gains is due to workout design, not fatigue.

I totally agree. Workout designs as well as varying the routine from time to time are important. I myself change up the parameters of my workouts as well as their motions every 3 to 4 weeks.

I'm beginning to feel 5x5/3x3 is the best workout design, it has a lot of flexibility and as long as you have adequate time for the workouts, it seems like it would work well for almost everyone.

I used to like the waterbury method but now I am trying to find a work out that is better suited for a grappler.

yeah, that seems pretty close to 5x5, he says 4x6 is essentially the same thing with lower set load, but I think you do gain quite a bit by doing the last set of the 5x5 @ 75-80% 1RM. I got pretty good results from the 5x5, I was at about 1.7xBW @ 5x5 at my strongest but usually at least 1.5-1.6.

Are you doing MMA? I was doing some MMA sparring with some people at my gym, my training is mostly in striking though (Krav, Wing Chun, a little judo) and I'm not a great grappler.

Though I am mostly doing brazilian jiu jitsu at the moment, I also spar on occasion and have tried to learn a bit of kick boxing.

BJJ is a little bit too... intimate for my tastes. I like destroying people from a little further away 😀

I've heard more than one person say that. Ms. Face came by once and her constant teasing kept me from training. It made for a good laugh. Well at least she and I got a good laugh out of it; the guys didn't like all of her jokes .

Anyway, if you are comfortable with yourself and can keep yourself from thinking that way, BJJ is a lot of fun. At first I refused to do BJJ for that reason, but not anymore. Even though I do grapple all the time and I am triangle choked from time to time, I never question my sexuality or feel uncomfortable with being in those positions.

I prefer it over other arts because, brute strength doesn't ever guarantee you a victory. Furthermore, I feel that all the best fighters in the UFC have decent ground game as well as good striking abilities. For example, I think that A. Silva is a great athlete, but don't feel he would be so dominant in the UFC if it weren't for his proficiency in both Muay Thai and BJJ.

In any case, some one proficient in BJJ is quite dangerous, and more than capable of taking out larger opponents who don't have any ground game.

i agree with you to some degree about BJJ but I think you can get by in MMA just fine if you can MT clinch and are a good striker...

Yeah... they can be good if you're in the right mindset; if you're super busy... not so much.

Actually I was busy, but he is a good guy so I decided to listen to him... unfortunately it ate away at my paper time, so now I am still up, trying desperately to finish my paper...

I made a promise to make my 5,000th post here when I heard back from Columbia. Well, here is that milestone of a post... I got an email from my Mom regarding my application at Columbia.

I was rejected. 🙁 It is incredibly disappointing but it was honestly the outcome I was expecting. I am doing fine - it sucks but that's just how things are sometimes and life goes on. I have some other fine acceptances to choose from and I'm sure that wherever I go I will be happy.

I'm not going to try to justify it or make myself feel better by saying "well I didn't want to go there anyway." The truth of the matter is that it was my dream school and top choice, and I felt it was the perfect fit for me. I'm just going to deal with the decision and move on.

I want to say a huge thank you to everyone here for their support, encouragement, and friendship throughout this entire beast of a process. I wish you all the best of luck in the future and I can't wait to meet some of you next year.

Aw that sucks chad, I'm sorry to hear that, keep your head up!
