CLASS OF 2014...how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just one more exam in...a little over 5 hours from now and Penn Vet V'14 will be DONE!!! I'm so excited I can't sleep...oh wait, not that's not excitement, it's frantic studying for immunology 😉

This quarter went really well for me, mostly because I really worked my butt off and tried so so hard in all of my classes. I worked harder this quarter than I ever have in an academic/classroom setting and it is so awesome to have that work pay off. Even if it meant a few sleepless nights.

After the exam tomorrow I get to sit on a panel for pre-vets that are doing a week of classes/exposure to Penn and answer questions from them, then we're having our end of school bbq (word through the grapevine says there'll be a slip n slide) and well, heck! we're free!
I can't believe it's finally here. May 27th seemed like an date so far in the future not that long ago.

👍

i'm so excited!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😀 all i can think about is which happy hour to attend before the club lol OR nap before. such a hard decision!

Easy decision for me... No nap = no party. I have a date with my pillow after lunch!

oooo i didn't know SOV partied  i look forward to seeing your groovy-ness on the dance floor! if not, i definitely want to see an inebriated SOV!!

We had our class party at a club in center city last night. Just wanted to say that SOV is a crazyyy dancer!!! I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw him and his wife dancing together!!! they even went up on the stage!! They looked so insanely cute dancing together, AND they stayed out real late!!
My body feels like it is going to die this morning though, i'm not even sure if i'll be able to dance like him when I'm that old.

So, SOV, you totally kicked my butt and blew me away! 👍

Thanks. You were definitely the energizer dancing buddy!

😀 It was fun.. Luckily end of year parties are only once a year! Gotta start training for the next one.

So glad to be done with first year. That's all I have to say.

Second year looks a lot more interesting. I've heard mixed opinions as to whether it is harder...but most say it's just different. Makes sense.

Welp I'm laying in the backyard listening to remixes of Kid Cudi and Snoop Dogg... so I guess I'm doing pretty good...

Finally finished here with first year at UC Davis, and I couldn't be happier and prouder to be an Aggie 😍 To be honest, I'm almost a little sad that it is summer break because I know I'll miss school and my amazing classmates!

Where does the term Aggie come from? I thought A&M peeps were Aggies... I'm so confuzzled😕

Well, we at UC Davis are Aggie's too. I guess it is because UC Davis is the most Ag UC school. Here is a paragraph quoted from wikipedia 😉

"The official school mascot is the mustang. Students at UC Davis are referred to as Aggies in honor of the school's agricultural heritage. Unlike most colleges, there is a distinction between the name for students and the mascot. There was a movement to change the school's mascot from the mustang to the cow, but despite student support this was turned down after opposition from alumni. Many people will call the mustang mascot of UC Davis an Aggie, but this is not its proper name; the mustang mascot is named Gunrock. The name dates to 1921 when the US Army brought a horse named Gun Rock to UC Davis to supply high-quality stock for cavalry horses. The mustang mascot was selected to honor that cavalry horse."

F THAT i'm not sad bring on the long island iced tea!!!!!
I'm not sad at all either. I only wish we could have booze and flautas and brownies every day....which I guess we can for the next 3 months. Woohoo!

I also get sad when semesters/school year's end. I'm the world's biggest nerd and prefer being in classes over taking time off! (well - short periods are GREAT and super necessary)

I can't wait to join you guys...

Except that Gunrock was a Thoroughbred.

hee hee, that's so Western. Cain't honor none of them there Eastern hosses.....:laugh::laugh:

We just got our schedules for next semester. They have changed our classroom for next semester to our histo lab. I heard they were remodeling it to make it a more efficient classroom but I am still NOT happy about it. I just don't like the room, or the chairs, or the tables. Also, our first round of tests surround my birthday. We have several right before and right after 🙁

UC Davis lets vet students between years 1-2 and 2-3 do certain clinical rotations in the VMTH over the summer. I chose to do 2 weeks in Neurology/Neurosurgery. My rotation-mates were 4 others from class of 2014, 1 from class of 2013 and 1 from class of 2012 (so only one senior...sometimes I felt bad for him in rounds haha).

It was awesome. A lot of work (12-14 hour days + time afterwards finishing up records), but seriously awesome. I feel like I learned so much from just those 2 weeks! My last day on the rotation was yesterday and I didn't want to leave. 😳

I'm totally jealous! UT offers a summer program but it is entirely research based, which sadly held no interest for my clinically oriented little butt. I would have killed to spend two weeks on a random rotation.

That sounds awesome!

I've been back in the lab all summer. Right now I'm investigating the genetic basis for cystinuria and avian tuberculosis susceptibility in dogs. It's pretty cool, but also low key, which I like.

This past weekend I went and volunteered at an animal shelter here in Philly that has a wellness clinic and surgery for dogs and cats (this is where a lot of Penn Vet kids get their neuter/spay experience). It was my first time and I was a little nervous since I have no animal experience but it ended up being really cool! I accidentally got there an hour early so they let me volunteer in surgery for that hour. I gave injections and microchipped animals. And then when I went to the wellness clinic the doctor let me do PEs when I wanted/listen to cardiac sounds etc. It was cool and I can't wait to go back and learn some more.

It was for sure!

Your research sounds cool. Can't wait to read the paper that will def come out of it right? 😉

I'm actually getting funding for continuing some of my previous research this summer as well, through our summer research program and also through MAF. I had to pinky swear with my PI that I would still get everything I needed done even with doing 2 weeks of clinics.

Ooh, I can only imagine how much you learned! I'm jealous! 😀 (<-Green with envy)

Angry kitties at work make me all the more excited about going back to school and being on-call for Necropsy because those animals don't make mean noises or raise my blood pressure.

Because I'm bored out of my brain, I catch myself debating in my head about which rotations I'll want to do next summer. There are so many things I want to do!

Awesome! Penn does this too and i'm taking the course right now 🙂 I'm doing 2 weeks of medicine and 2 weeks of emergency. So far my favorite part was attending appointments and seeing what rounds are like. It is really cool to see all of the info we learned first year applied clinically. Sometimes when the rotations aren't that busy I head over to special species, cardio, or radiology. Last week I saw them treat a Panther Chameleon! 😀 http://imgur.com/qyrYD?full

It's not a course for us - we don't get credit for it or have to pay, and we don't get paid. We get our own cases like the seniors (though the techs, residents and faculty obviously know we aren't and help us out with things a little more and are a lot more forgiving when we don't know things!). We just don't get evaluated at the end like they do.

So we're responsible for everything for our patients from the time they first arrive (with a resident making all the actual medical decisions but discussing them with us of course!) including doing the initial hx/pe, then neuro exam with a resident (gradually getting to do more and more of neuro exam ourselves with the resident there) presenting them in rounds, doing all treatments they need from 8 am-8pm, getting samples for lab tests, making sure they get to the right places for procedures like anesthesia, radiology and MRI, and writing up the records + discharge orders, until they are discharged.

Is it the same for you guys?

edit: also having a pager makes you feel like an early 90's drug dealer or rap star. And there is a student on call at all times on weeknights and weekends for neuro so we have on call shifts too.

Whoa, that's intense! But very cool!

I'm beepin' your two way.

Or whatever the kids say. But awesome pagers aside, that sounds really great! Jeeeeealous. Not sure if anything similar is offered at Mizzou, but we do get extra clinic time.

nyan, soooooo freaking jealous right now!!! i'm stationed at the vth, but in a lab studying bloody diarrhea. i thought i'd enjoy it a bit more with my undying love/hate relationship with parvo... but it's just really smelly more than anything else.

cool! We get credit for our course and the tuition is free. It's not as hands on. We can help with everything except treatments. We pair up with 4th years on all of their cases

Bump. I thought this thread should be revived. I'm so not looking forward to class starting back. The classmates have started arriving back in town so it has been good to see everyone and catch up. We have a few get togethers planned before class starts back on the 22nd.

School might as well have started for us today. Class starts on Wednesday, but today and tomorrow are taken up with horrible torture known as communication seminars....

Yay for getting lectured on how to talk to people for several hours in a frigid room, then the opportunity to practice with fake clients and cases in front of a camera!

I know communication is a big important deal and all, but I wish that would have left the last two days of summer break alone. 😡

We have to do that every year. I hate being video taped. It makes me feel silly and nervous.

Speaking of poop.....

Our first parasitology lab should have been titled "playing with poop"....

 we had "poop place" in parasitology lab where we could bring in and store fecal samples from our pets, and test them for parasites. A little fridge and all the supplies for doing fecal floats and direct smears and stuff...

First surgery today - neuter, and he still alive and kicking! But I am wiiiiiiped after the long day.

I hate any word/variation/slang of "poop".... "poop", "poo", "turd", "feces"... all four of which were used today in lecture... I hate saying it or hearing it... it's gonna be a long semester....

Interesting. We too played with poop our first parasit lab and haven't touched the stuff since. It was like "hey guys, first day of school, so let's play with ****!" and then the second lab "what? No no, we're playing with fleas. Poop? What's that?"

I wonder if it's like a parasitology right of passage...
