CLASS OF 2014...how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Interesting. We too played with poop our first parasit lab and haven't touched the stuff since. It was like "hey guys, first day of school, so let's play with ****!" and then the second lab "what? No no, we're playing with fleas. Poop? What's that?"

I wonder if it's like a parasitology rite of passage...

🙄

Wait, what? You guys are doing surgery second year?

Yeah we do it super-early. We have surgery and anesthesia class which includes 6 surgery labs (spays and neuters). I think we do additional elective surgery classes in third year as well.

Our infectious disease prof said the word doo-doo at least 4 times yesterday. Does that make your list of poo words you don't like? 😀

Lolololol I'm reading this in class and stifling laughter. Yea that makes the list but its a giggly word for me!

I missed the first parasit lab that played with poop lol I just came back from our trip to the Galapagos 4 days late due to hurricane Irene. After all the time I said I'd start prepared this year, I can't believe I'm already behind!! 🙄

We play with poop A LOT in parasit. Oklahoma is like the parasite hotbed of the country so we get a lot of parasitology. Is this the first semester of parasit for you guys?

We had parasit last semester--played with poop some, but not all the time.

So far the worst classes this semester seem to be Clinical Pathology (information overload!) and...PHARMACOLOGY. Pharmacology....how I despise thee.

But, we did learn hands-on how to pass urinary catheters today, so that was a welcome break from lectures. 🙂

I kinda like clin path, but I agree that pharm is definitely kicking my tail. Which begs a good question, does anyone out there have a good reference for learning basic pharm? I think it will get better once we're into actual drugs, but the conceptual stuff and the equations go right over my head..... 🙁

Fa sho. And first semester for me ever...

So far, parasitology for us is pretty tame. No poop as of yet.

I thought I'd hate gen path, but I'm really, really enjoying it. It's one of my favourite classes. The professor who usually teaches it isn't teaching us this year, and the guy they got to do it is absolutely amazing and makes it SO interesting.

Agreed! If anyone knows of any good sources, please share. So far I've just been doing google searches, haha.
There's a reason I only took 2 semesters of non-calc based math!!

I'm pretty sure I've made that same mistake in the past and you corrected me then as well.

Overall review of second year classes, three weeks in?

Anesthesiology - interesting, fun. 🙂
Surgery - stressful and DISORGANIZED. Major time sink. Grrr. :scared:
General Pathology - best one by far!!! 😍
Parasitology - gross and awesome. 😎
PE Skills - playing with real animals! 😀
Pharmacology - snooze-fest. 😴

So far second year is a lot better than first year. Classes are more interesting and more manageable than first year. I am even going to class so far (shocking). Today was 5 hours of lecture, a trip to the pet store and just finishing up about 5 hours of studying. My first shift at the small animal hospital is tomorrow so that should be fun. I also got into a super cool elective that is an independent study of the human-animal bond so I'm really excited about that. I'll stop now lest I get too cheerful and disrupt the universe :meanie:

 Glad to hear your semester is going well so far.

I'm kinda bummed, but I'm taking a few weeks off of work to see if I can get this semester back under control. It appears to have taken off without me and left me hanging by the seat of pants. I was so stressed out that I practically burst into tears when I talked to my boss today. Thankfully, she's pretty understanding. And hopefully here in a week or two I will have gotten my ducks in a row and can go back to it.

Uh, yeah. This year is way more interesting so far, but now I get why year two is said to be the worst. I'm wiped, and it's only been about a month! I definitely had a little verifiable breakdown tonight for the first time since starting vet school. Already counting until fall break!

I'm just 2 days into this semester, but I feel like I'm cheating even saying that - Friday and Tuesday are our two shortest school days of the week, and that's all I've had. I haven't even had class after lunch yet. It's going to take off fast, though, I'm sure. The classes, for the most part, look like they're going to be super interesting, if a ton of work. I need to locate my "I'm in school" mode fast...before the semester takes off without me.

You're not the only one who feels like this! I'm really worried about that ridiculous 7-8 exam stretch in October. I'm already just trying to keep up as it is!

So far, I really like second year. Granted, our first exam isn't until Friday, but I'm enjoying things so far. I havent fallen behind yet, I'm on top of all my studying (been doing >3 hours a day, without even having an exam in the near future), doing reasonably well on quizzes, and I just don't feel the same stress and pressure as first year. I actually enjoy studying for some classes. Even the classes I'm not a big fan of (like pharm) I've been able to study without it being worse than pulling teeth. I love my electives. I like our intro to clinics class that was supposed to be horrible. I'm really enjoying clin path. Clin anatomy has been pretty interesting, although I think it might get confusing have so many professors. Overall, 2nd year >>> 1st year.

It's a good feeling, and I hope it sticks around!

👍 totally agree (except for the whole studying more than 3 hours a day part. I need to get going with studying 😳)

So just one more week til exams start, which means an exam every week 🙁 I'm starting to feel the same type of stress and anxiety as last year but I think it is just because I know what school will be like now. Last year, it didn't hit me til the middle of the semester and when I started getting my grades back lol

The best part about studying this semester is the classes are awesome. Path is really interesting and so is parasite. It's so much better than biochem/histo/dev bio. Wow, I REALLY hated the classes last fall haha

btw--isnt it so weird calling yourself a "second year"!! I can't believe it!!!

Did my first surgery on monday!! Stressful, but exciting!

Congratulations on your surgery!

I am still liking second year especially compared to first year. We are in the middle of a bunch of tests but they are going ok so far. I pretty much dread anything to do with parasitology but I am being very well behaved and studying it like crazy 🙂
This year we get to (have to) do shifts at the small and large animal hospitals. I am not a large animal person but I have to say I love the large animal hospital. It is huge... there's like 8 barns and I still get confused where stuff is. It's nice being out there because the fourth years actually need our help sometimes with restraint and hand walking and I prefer that to standing around getting in people's way which tends to happen at the small animal hospital. Plus there was a baby pygmy goat and he was the cutest thing ever.

Two more exams until fall break and I cannot wait!!! Bacteriology and both Nutrition course exams are out of the way, and I've spent about 9 hours today working on re-writing my Pathology 2 notes. So exhausting. I'm actually less worried about Pharmacology than Pathology because I have a better grasp of the math and biochemistry than memorizing the diseases (but if all else fails, it's probably Lymphoma).

We have our first parasitology exam tomorrow. I'm so exhausted at the moment that all I can remember is that you're supposed to eat poop or sushi. This is going to go well.

Edit: that was supposed to say "not"...

 Also, remember to cook your fleas before you eat them.

This!!!

I woke with a start this morning because I could not for the life of me remember what worm has females that live in the gynecophoric groove of the male. (Its Heterobilharzia americana btw).

I really wish spelling wasn't all or none for credit.

no no no, watchu talkin bout!? Sushi's totally ok as long as it's frozen first! Euks don't survive freezing well. And even with neorickettsia helminthoeca, apparently as long as the the fluke's frozen and dead, it can't harm you (or that's what I was told). Plus psssshhht, no hemorrhagic enteritis will ever stop me from eating my sushi!

but i agree. poop eating is bad. pooping in the pasture near animals is just as bad.

Careful with that Neorickettsia helminthoeca, Ballweber will get you if you don't capitalize that genus 😉

lol, ballwebber don't give a crap. it's all ramct with a glossary (one of those stupid closed book, online, take-homes). all it takes is copy and paste!

now, fails on the other hand...

Sad news for me.....I am no longer a v2014er. Had to take a medical leave of absence due to the 10 million tests and doctor appointments I have been having and surgery next month...🙁 You'll have to find some other old guy with failing physiology to kick around.

Look for me on the 2015er thread in the future.

Bye bye.

Sorry to hear that, SOV. Hope everything goes well for you, and that you are able to come back strong next year!

Shucks! I'm looking forward to your strong comeback though (plus, us 2015ers get to graduate with the one and only SOV!).

Oh no! So sorry about the health issues. Us 2015er's are a good bunch, though 🙂

So sorry, SOV. That sounds really stressful and hard. Focus on feeling better now and next year you can be friends with meeeeee!😀

I'm really sorry to hear this, SOV. Take it slow and take care of yourself. I will keep you in my thoughts; and wish you the best for a speedy and relatively pain free recovery!!

bah humbug. I'm sorry, SOV. Keep us updated!

Thanks for all thoughts everyone....

As for you Nyanko.....when you get to my age you can't remember that many of your previous years anymore so each year is MAGNIFIED:laugh:....

On the positive side, one of the side effects of my condition is memory problems... Now I have a great excuse for those first year struggles!

Late night partying usually leads to memory problems in my experience.

🙁 Apparently, I killed a bunch of hypothetical patients by misdiagnosing them in Clin Path last Friday. Just said hi to my first almost failing test grade of vet school, in one of the few classes that I'm actually interested in and will get long term use out of.

Anybody know of a good resource for case based practice at reading bloodwork?
