CLASS OF 2014...how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
🙁 Apparently, I killed a bunch of hypothetical patients by misdiagnosing them in Clin Path last Friday. Just said hi to my first almost failing test grade of vet school, in one of the few classes that I'm actually interested in and will get long term use out of.

Anybody know of a good resource for case based practice at reading bloodwork?

If you have the clin path book, look in the back and there are practice cases. Also, talk to the profs - they are VERY interested in seeing you succeed. I talked to all of them when I was having some difficulties with the class and they went out of their way to ask how I felt I was doing for the rest of the semester and sat down with me whenever there was any confusion.

At least they were hypothetical and not real patients. I agree that practice is the way to get better. The way our clin path class is taught is almost all case based stuff with the professors explaining stuff as we go through each case. Definitely talk to your professors for some more advice!

Oh I wouldn't let it get you down. I've slaughtered many a hypothetical patient in my day.

"If you had a sick cat, would y'all give it acetaminophen?" "Sure, why not."

Lol. I'm trying not to let it bum me out, but a lot of clin path seems to be based on memorizing patterns, and I've always sucked at memorization. I'm also trying to remember that it was one of those tests where every 3-4 questions are based on your answer to the previous question, and it was graded for all-or-nothing credit. Thus missing the first question results in losing like 10 points....urg.

Speaking of memorizing patterns, what about those 2 15-20 point questions about MCHC & MCV patterns and clotting tests patterns? Those two questions were pretty ridiculous, IMHO.

Here at UT we're currently running the gauntlet of 8 exams in 4 weeks, along with quizzes, and performing as surgeons and anesthetists for the first time. IT SUCKS! I haven't felt this discouraged/stressed out in a long time. 🙁

Oh yeah, I forgot about those.

And don't forget the lab assignment and quiz we have each of those weeks too. 😱

I'm sure we'll survive though. This time last year, all the Pennwe's were panicking so I guess it's our turn. 😀 Who want's to be next? The club should make jackets.

Winter is from the second week of January until mid March.

We've got Repro, first half of Sys Path and Clin Path, and the second half of Pharmacology as core, as well as having to choose either LA or SA Radiology. And other electives as well from a pretty big list. It's actually less discrete classes in a quarter than we've had so far but from reports from previous years they are some of the most difficult. And spring is apparently no picnic either, with Tox, second half of Sys Path and Clin Path, Anesthesiology and some other random courses plus the first in whatever Medicine (SA, FA, EQ) series we want to take (you can take all 3 if you want and some in last year's class did - resulting in 35 credit hour loads for some people 😱)

I know it differs between schools but my transcript for last year had 69 credits for the year... crazy huh.

Since we're on quarters (and I think it's a lot like you guys' where fall is about the length of a semester and spring and winter are quarters) we average about 20-25 per quarter so that's about right for us too. 35 is still a bit ridiculous here - I am definitely not taking all 3 medicines in case anyone had any doubt

I will probably take FA and SA.

Yea, 39 credits this semester and 16 credits of it is pathology--i didn't believe it would actually feel like THAT much more info compared to other class. But considering how much i attempted to cram in my head, I realize it is accurate lol. Seriously impossible to memorize everything in the handouts in such a short period of time! I'm just happy the exam was on the easier side of what could have been asked 😀

On a fun note--

Anyone have Halloween plans!?!? We have a costume contest during happy hour on that Friday-I'm doing a group costume. I'll be the Cheshire cat 😍 Made my costume with my mom last week and so excited to wear it!

OK-State has a Halloween party every year. This year, however, they scheduled it the same time as one of OSU's main homecoming activities. Homecoming at OSU is kinda a big deal (not so much for the vet school, though) And they are limiting everyone's free drinks to 2 (in the past it has been 5-unlimited). The booze limit wouldn't keep me from going but the homecoming stuff might. That and I don't have a costume yet. My favorite part of Halloween has always been handing out candy to the trick or treaters. So cute!

huh, well it must be different unless CSU is totally slackin, cause my entire 1st year combined was only 43 credits! That included a 2 credit elective for Exotic Animal Anatomy/Husbandry (non-mammal) with lab.

I have 18 credits this semester. Some of the students only have 14, I think, because they took our cell bio class in undergrad if they went to Mizzou.

!?!
@ Penn- anatomy (11 credits) and biochemistry (10 credits). Then there's everything else on top of that!

Yeah, everything is worth like half what your stuff is worth. Anatomy is 5, Physiology is 6, Cell Bio is 4... Conceptually, the biochem stuff is kind of split between phys/cell bio.. and I don't really like how it's handled in cell bio, but that's besides the point.

So I guess your numbers are just like 2x ours? Ish?

To actually compare I guess we'd have to look at how many hours are spent in lecture / lab or however the school determines the numbers of credits.

At Penn Vet.. this is well defined...

1 credit =
a) 8 lecture hours or
b) 16 seminar hours or
c) 24 lab hours
or a combination thereof.

Lets focus back on the fun Halloween lol

Lissarae--I love seeing the kids dressed up too! I volunteered to let the kids in my apartment knock on my door for candy. I can't wait to see them!! Luckily, the actual holiday is no where near when I'll be celebrating myself (Fri night) so I can go to Alpha Psi's party too! 😀

StartingOverVet--i better see you that weekend! I miss you and your wife. Come visit during happy hr

Like total? Our anatomy lab is 1 hour lecture 2x week, and 3 hour lab 3x week.

I'm pretty sure it equals about the same thing, y'all just get more numbers on your transcript.

You're not alone, Breenie. AVC's first year is 19 credits each semester, but I'm pretty sure we're working just as hard as everyone else.

Not a 2014'er, but Halloween (or at least, the weekend before it) is going to be amazing for us. It marks the end of midterms. There will be partying. There's a toga party in the works, actually. 😀

Sounds about right... except more labs and fewer lectures at Penn for anatomy. about 16 lecture hours and 200 lab hours + exam time

Theoretically I am not allowed in vet school buildings anymore without a visitors pass😱....Would you let me in?

And I am not sure "my wife" is allowed out of the house anymore until she gets more work done on her thesis!

of course I'll let you in! lol silly question

It's the same here at UT. I think our highest credit hour semester before clinics is 22-23, and we average between 40-45 per year. Fourth year clinicals is something like 55-65 but spans the whole year, not just August-May.

What it really amounts to is 8-9 classes each semester, that vary from 1-2 hours per week to >10 hours per week between lecture and lab. So I really don't think we're working any less hard than anyone else, just the numbers add up differently.

Penn just has an absurd amount of credits for each course. I'm sure that we're all working equally hard 🙂

So second year is going alright for me academically so far. Parasitology kicks my ass in terms of life cycles, but that probably also has something to do with trying to cram about 50 lifecycles into two nights of studying. whoops 🙄

So far so good though, I'm really enjoying pathology.

I'm also really enjoying actually understanding/being able to answer some of the Zuku NAVLE practice questions. some of them.

Haha, I think first quarter of first year you guys at Penn were working harder and more stressed than us at UCDavis, to be honest. I remember feeling really, really bad for you all. But I'm pretty sure we caught up after that.

I had literally just gone back and done the last couple weeks' worth of these before I clicked on this tab. Once again you are some kind of Penn counterpart to me except with more motivation since you actually already got a Ph.D. 😀

Bacteriology has me missing Parasitology. Even more memorization (my weakness), but at least it appears to be more interesting. At least I've read through the material and jotted down my notes and the second exam isn't until Wednesday.

I feel like I've got a groove going with my study schedule, but it sure is exhausting. I'm actually enjoying Radiology and Pharmacology a lot more than most of my classmates.

Still bummed that my grades won't look as good as they did first year, but that's second-year for us.:scared:

Some of the class of 2014 here had performed their first surgeries today. I did mine yesterday--a successful neuter on a really sweet lab-pit bull mix. My other group members did a fantastic job as assistants and with anesthesia. And everything looked great when I checked on him this morning! He acted like he didn't even know anything had happened, haha
It almost makes the 8 exams in a month worth it!

I'm with you on this one! My group did a fantastic job, even with the shock of pulling out a pregnant uterus. 😱 Seeing a happy wagging tail, and knowing that we kept our patient alive makes me feel slightly better about my grades right now. 😛

It's pretty exciting to finally start learning lots of doctor words, and systematically going through different pathologies. Makes me hopeful that one day I will be able to actually diagnose something, rather than just going "oh, I heard about that in class one day!" on isolated things which was the extent of my abilities after first-year.

Very jealous of those of you who start spay/neuters so early in school!

My favorite quote for the semester is "Put your big girl panties on, and use your big girl words." Gone are the days of saying things like high red blood cell count, and crystals present. 😛

Sigh....we just got brain-raped by antibiotics/pharmacology. :scared: How are everyone else's finals and end of the semester going?

I feel like I survived Pharm. It was a relief that there were so many straight forward and fair questions when I was expecting the worst of the worst.

I.E.

A. askdfa;slkdjf
B. rehklsdfls
C. as;dklhsal;d
D. A & B
E. A & C
F. None of the above.
G. All of the above.
H. Only answers that end in the letter "y".
I. Whatever you feel like bubbling in.

I think I just got raped by the Parasitology final, or at least the written part. What sucks is it was concentual since I agreed to take the test, so I can't even call the cops on it.

 True. At least it's over and we can move towards recovery/forgetting?

I had final 1 of 9 today. It was more difficult than I was expecting and the format was a little different than our midterm but I think I did ok on it. We have parasit lab final tomorrow, and for some reason, I'm not that worried about it. I'm sure that will come back to bite me in the butt tomorrow, but oh well.

Syrio wouldn't be very happy about your inability to defend yourself against a bite in the rear.

I'm jealous of all of you that are getting finals over with. We have another week yet and I can't wait to go home.

Speaking of parasitology, is anyone else graded on spelling? We have a minimum of 40 parasites per test and drugs/diseases/genus/species/etc have to be spelled (and capitalized) appropriately. No partial credit. I can't remember if we discussed this, but is anyone else graded that way?

Good luck to everyone on finals!

We had parasit last year. I don't think we were graded on exact spelling, but the professors had to be able to clearly know what you meant, so you really only had one or two letters leeway.

Yeah, and I didn't receive any points when I had perfect spelling, because I accidentally invented a new creature by combining the genus of one with the species of another on at least 2 different questions.

All I remember from that is that a side effect of vancomycin is that you turn into a redneck :meanie:.

(and all the drugs that will kill kitty cats. I think I'm speedily heading towards becoming a feline only practitioner)
