CLASS OF 2014...how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
First day back today. It was so long. I think I am going to like most of the classes but I am a little worried about one of them. We lost 2 people from last semester but gained 5 transfers. We actually added a guy to the class bringing our guy total up to 14 lol

We didn't lose anybody either, but gained one. 😀

We now have 28 guys in a class of 101. 🙂

First day back was yesterday and we watched a segment of School House Rock in neuro. It was AMAZING. 😀

I miss school house rock. That show was awesome! Ah, childhood memories....

Is anyone else dreading this semester? I'm only on my second day, but all I hear from the upperclassmen is that this is the worst semester. I'm trying to stay positive, but when professors who were super nice last semester say, "Unfortunately, this is not going to be an easy class..." I tend to start panicking.

You'll be fine. Upperclassmen have been saying that about this semester too (second semester of second year) and so far, I'm really enjoying it.

Some people in my class loved anatomy, I really didn't.

Different strokes for different folks! 🙂

We just got our schedule today and woah...I am no longer looking forward to this semester. I hope I survive - it's INSANITY!

After an ice day today and an already scheduled delayed opening tomorrow, this semester is off to a slooow start.

I warned you! When they had me review it I was like "Well, there goes anything resembling a life".

Though, look closer at the afternoon labs. A lot of them are broken up into one hour sessions of group B1 or A2 or whatever. Not AS bad. I'm more annoyed about Epidemiology at 8 am followed by an elective at 9 that I don't have to be there for!

Dear Pathology,
please die.

carry on!

Surviving through Krakowka is a rite of passage at OSU. You'll be fine, and so will everyone else.

There's a telegraph line, you've got yours and I've got mine... it's called the nerrrvousss systemmm!!

First day back for UT. I'm both glad to be back, and feeling like I've been beat over the head. ><

We have three new people to make up for the one we lost last semester (all returning after personal leave of absences), and they seem pretty cool.

Hopefully the epic start to our day doesn't predict the rest of the semester. First class on the first day of the semester.......the teacher can't get out of their driveway! Class was cancelled.

Agreed. I think it took a couple of minutes for me to process the concept of an anatomy quiz on Friday. I hope it eases us back into things! :scared:

I definitely need to get back on a regular sleep schedule though. A month of staying up until at least midnight did not work so well with waking up at 6:30 am today.

Ditto this. Got to bed at 2:00 am and was up at 6:00 am...that should correct my sleeping schedule for tonight though! 😀

Nine hours of class yesterday with no break (not even the normal 10 min break) between the last 3... today 6 hours of lecture, a lunch talk, an hour studying in lab, and 4 hours studying... I'm tired, but this is nowhere near as bad as last semester.

I am not a fan of this semester so far. Everything seems so....disorganized compared to last semester.

we have so much free time this semester, of course it is great i love it!! however, im not taking advantage of it for studying purposes. why do i never learn from the past?!?! i was DYING last semester and when i think back on it im surprised i made it through, why cant i use this free time to catch up on studying?! sighh

tommorrow is happy hr, meeting pre vets (yay!), pig roast, then bar after. and ironically my bf says he wants to come out, which is great because ive been asking him to come out to meet my friends more. but this means another night of not studying. 🙁 i only have myself to blame.

this weekend im gonna hit the books like no other!

Tsk tsk tsk 🙂
Well at least you have a 3 day weekend to make up for it!

Don't worry too much though I've heard lots of ppl saying they havent started yet. I've been doing physio but not as much as I should be.

A little over a week to our first exam though! Gotta hit the books!

This has been a good week! I found a summer job doing a research project on dogs (which took a huge load off my back, as I was getting nervous) and we've had some great speakers.

Yesterday we had Dr. Pajor from the University of Calgary vet school, and Dr. Broom from the University of Cambridge, and then today we had Dr. Temple Grandin come and give a talk! She was really great and her talk was really interesting. It turns out my animal behaviour prof was a PhD student with her at the University of Illinois. Anyway, that was a fantastic end to the week! Hooray!

That is really cool, and I'm really jealous. We haven't had too many speakers from outside the university like that.

We were lucky because the Western Canadian Association of Bovine Practitioners held a conference here this week, and they brought in the speakers. Our school just took advantage of the opportunity to get them to speak in the school since they were here anyway. 🙂

For the record, I hate online classes!!! Besides that, I think the second semester will be a good one 🙂

hey guys. so, first day back for semester 2, quarter 1. One of our classmates appears to have left...bummer. can't believe it happened already. To be fair, it was a HUGE adjustment for us-they eased us in with clinical rotations and then slammed us with classes. it was tough, and a lot of us struggled through to pass decently. at least now we are all well into study mode, and weirdly, starting with cardiovascular phys is fantastic to me. i love it.
k, good luck on semester two all!

How dare you love cardio.....haha. It's at least interesting to say the least. Severe insomnia trying to sleep the night before our first day. That is what I get for sleeping in until 11 every day 😴

Unfortunately we lost two people, but it does feel strangely good to be back. I'm sure I'll change my mind in about two weeks!

I just have to say I love our parasitology professor. I will now and forever think of hookworms crawling through human skin saying "this is not a dog!" in cute squeeky voices.

heh. i used to work in a cardiology lab, so, maybe that's why...

TWO we lost? what the...i only noticed one number down. huh. thats kinda sad.

Feeling a little discouraged today. We have covered so much info already and I feel so behind. It is only a week and a half into the semester and my brain feels full. The classes are more interesting this semester, but I feel like the profs are blazing through. I could NOT take notes fast enough in parasitology. Oh well, maybe this weekend I will get caught up. That's the plan anyway.

I am currently sitting in a room on campus with an undisclosed study partner and a wide assortment of snacks. First exams of the this semester start next week and it's time to get into serious study mode again! Not sure if that'll happen but I'm trying.....either way, I'm definitely having fun learning this stuff. All of our subjects this semester are so interesting (in my opinion) - Physiology, Immunology, Virology, Comparative Anatomy, Behavior..... Cardiophysiology is especially awesome right now. Anyway, back to the physiology "math" (also an awesome subject, imo 😛 )

After a disproportionate amount of complaining from Pennwe's last semester, you will notice nary a peep of complaint from us this "quarter" so far. 4 weeks in and the pace has been unbelievably different. The schedule is much more relaxed, only 1 exam before the pre-spring break cluster, and most everyone in the class is more relaxed.

The only negative has been the snow for me. Already 4th snowiest winter in Philly on record (last year was the snowiest). Not that it interferes with classes. Oh no. Penn NEVER shuts down it seems.

Back to this week's Friday schedule (which is absolutely ridiculous btw, I only have one stinkin class - labs for some others but not me!).

Hey Guys,

Question. Do any of you recommend using note taking software such as OneNote or Evernote for first year classes? I am wondering if anyone has had success using these programs with an ipad or tablet by taking notes/drawing pictures on powerpoints without messing up the formatting while being able to record the lecture at the same time (and thus go back to a specific point in the lecture by clicking on a certain note taken).

Thanks!

I have a lenova tablet with OneNote and it's really convenient. sometimes i would prefer paper notes but the organization can't be beat and i have everything in one place. and i print things off when i just really need to study by paper instead of on a computer screen.

loveeeeee one note! i can't wait to graduate and have all 4 yrs of notes in one place that i can carry in one hand.

I haven't started vet school yet but OneNote came on the new computer I got for Christmas and I use it for my undergrad classes and LOVE it. I love importing the PowerPoints and I can pay attention to what the lecturer is actually saying because writing down the notes doesn't take forever. I can highlight things, make math formulas, record voice and video, and everything is extremely organized. I love it!

I love OneNote so much, but a word of warning about Ohio State is that they make it very difficult for me to actually use OneNote. The professors tend to post their powerpoints online after lecture instead of before, so I can't import the Powerpoint and follow along in OneNote during lecture. Some don't post their powerpoints at all. Some don't even use Powerpoint. Others use some weird program to make their presentations so that the slides import into OneNote sideways.

So I gave up, and starting toting the huge, thick stack of printed notes to class like everyone else. Boo. This is my only real complaint about OSU. I mean, really, get with the technology! Lugging all that paper around is annoying.

I'm not understanding. If they are using powerpoints in class, and not posting until afterwards, what printed notes are you bringing to class?

At the beginning of each quarter, we buy a big ol' stack of printed notes. Usually costs somewhere between $50-$100. Some of the printed notes are just a copy of the powerpoint, which is later posted online (making me wonder why I paid for it). A lot of times they make adjustments to the powerpoint after we buy a printed copy, meaning that the printed version will be missing some information (again, annoying).

Other times the printed notes are in "book form" where everything is written out, while the powerpoint posted online is a brief outline. This can actually be quite helpful, as it often avoids the need for textbooks. However, it is difficult to follow along in class and take notes on something that looks like a textbook.

There have been issues in certain classes where the printed notes we buy aren't complete, and are missing certain lectures, so we have to keep track of which lectures we have copies for and which are only online.

As you can see, this gets very confusing. It sounds like Dean Sander is trying to streamline the process so it is more consistent, but the faculty drags thier feet.

Most people don't even bother using laptops in class, and just take notes on paper since we are paying for it every quarter!

Hmm. Well, that's strike 2 for Ohio then. The first strike being cost. Looks like I've gotta do some more thinking on this decision. 🙁

Eh, I'd be shocked if there was a school out there that DIDN'T have a problem w/ notes, technology, etc. Every professor is going to be different and have different preferences. Yes, it is a pain, but it isn't something that I'd let factor into my decision too much....

Just putting my two cents in about the onenote - I can't believe that I didn't know about it before this year. It is FANTASTIC. We all had to buy the same tablet PC for school - and while I find PCs in general very frustrating - being able to use the tablet, draw diagrams, and write things on the computer is incredibly helpful. A lot of times I type up review sheets, "print" them to onenote, and then sit and highlight away - it's almost like using paper/pen. Plus - it keeps me much more organized. If you go to a school where the professors send out their ppts ahead of time, I would really recommend it.

Thanks for the info. I'm usually super slow and stubborn when it comes to changing the way I take notes. Like after high school I was so stuck on using a notebook and pencil to take notes, and I never had an instructor use powerpoints until my second semester of biology freshman year. And I HATED it. She didn't make it so you could print out the slides, so you had to scramble to get everything written down, since it was already written down for her she felt like she could go really fast. Then when I got to Ohio State, ALL the teachers used powerpoint and posted the lecture slides online, and I was SO attached to my notebooks that I made it really hard on myself by refusing to print out the slides and continuing to use a notebook. Then I finally caved and started printing out the slides, and I really liked it so I did it, and then it seemed all of a sudden NONE of my teachers were posting slides. Now I got this new computer with OneNote, love it, and use it in every class, and all of a sudden I have a (really, really young) teacher in a women's studies class who doesn't let us use computers in class because she wants us all to "connect" to each other. Ugh.

But that's a little frustrating that sometimes they don't post the powerpoints until after lectures at the CVM. What's the point, then, you know? I guess I could take notes on paper at school, and then go home and transfer those to the powerpoints in OneNote. That could be a sort of study tool. This is going to be interesting for sure, no matter what!

Another thumbs up for OneNote. I record audio and video with the program during lecture so I can just click on my writing and jump to that part of the video. My only issue is with my laptop. I like my HP, but it's too hot and the fans to loud.

Rileyroo: How is the lenovo with heat and the fan?

Livestockdoc: As far as the written notes, that's about the same story with LSU. I'd think it's the same with most schools.

The professors here post their Powerpoints before lecture 99% of the time. If somebody doesn't it's usually because CERE (our course management site) is down or something.

Maybe it's because there is a computer requirement here, but it's pretty much protocol that it works this way.

Lucky you! I so wish our Parasitology prof was just even a little bit fun. Such a great subject for it not to be presented in an innovative way!

These issues are probably present at other vet schools as well. It may be this way at the other schools you are considering.

I think my problem is that I also interviewed and was accepted at Kansas State, and I can't help compare to the way things are done there. At Kansas State, everyone buys the same laptop as part of their tuition, and everyone uses OneNote, and all the professors provide notes in Powerpoint form that are loaded onto OneNote before class. It seems so organized and convenient compared to Ohio State! Ultimately I chose Ohio State because the price was right. And it is an amazing school.

I just wish we could have organization even within each class. When you have 15 different lecturers for one class alone, and each lecturer is using a different format for teaching, it drives me crazy! Some people feel the way I do, and others don't seem to mind at all. Maybe you aren't a control freak like me and you won't care. 🙂

I'm stubborn and slow to change as well. I had a whole OneNote studying system down in undergrad, and it was difficult for me to change.

Their justification for not posting the powerpoints until after class is so that they can make changes to the presentation up until right before class. But I find this exasperating, because if they make changes, that means the printed notes we have are different! I hate when I have two sets of notes, one on paper and one online, and they have different information on them. It's so confusing.

I also used to transfer notes onto OneNote when I got home. Sometimes I still do. But I largely found it to be an inefficient way of studying, having to search through slides to figure out where this relevant piece of info goes. Also, sometimes the powerpoint won't be posted until days or even weeks after the lecture. So that's another thing to keep track of.

Another pet peeve of mine is that the notes they give us are often full of typos. I know this seems like a small thing, but when I look at upperclassmen's notes from 3 years ago, and the same typos are there, I just can't believe they haven't bothered to fix it in three years!

Okay, I promise I do generally like it here. 🙂 If we could just fix the note system, and make it as amazing as most of our professors, I would be happy.

Just to reflect a different opinion...

I got the Lenovo tablet and got Onenote. It was fine and useful when I tried it out as an undergrad so I started out using it at Vet school.

Personally I found it an inefficient way to take notes in class and ditched it for the old fashion pen and paper.

I like to study from paper and my notes look like crap writing on the computer, I find it annoying to switch from hi-liting to using the pen, and I don't think I learn as much typing things in (my brain goes to neutral) as I do when I write.

So, my computer has become an expensive powerpoint downloading and audio file playing machine. And I am burning up forests to study.
But that is what works for an old dinosaur like me.

If you are used to typing notes on a computer than OneNote is great. If you have used a tablet and like it then OneNote is great. It is a great program, just doesn't work for me.

I actually listen to lecture podcasts and take paper and pen notes later too, for what it's worth. If I had a tablet I MIGHT take notes in class, but honestly I've found what works best for me is to try to listen in class (if it's one of the classes I actually go to ) without writing and then do notes later when I can pause the lecture to look something up or fastforward through stuff I know or rewind if I miss something.

And I buy recycled paper so I don't feel quite so bad about it, haha. I do go through pens really, really fast this way though...

Wow, hard to believe a school like OSU is so behind the technology curve, and a school like KSU, which I wouldn't have thought would be very "cutting edge" apparently is, at least with notes. Yeah, I guess we are lucky at KSU with how they handle notes. All incoming freshman get the same tablet laptop, preloaded with the OneNote files for the semester. However, it ain't cheap - we pay $800 a year for "tech fee", so about $3200 by the time we're done. We get to keep the computer, which of course by the end of 4 years will probably be a steaming pile o' crap. But we have included tech support and everything the whole time we're here, which has been very useful for many. I guess I've been lucky with mine so far, but I know a lot of classmates have had many problems with these Fujitsu Lifebooks. One just got hers back two weeks into semester after having HD replaced.

The OneNote was all totally new to me. I'm kind of old school (ok, maybe just old!) and was very used to printing out notes before class and writing on paper. So I thought I would have a tough time giving that up and being more paperless, but it's actually been pretty good. It's great to be able to have everything in one place and scribble whatever notes I need right on the screen, and not feel like I'm killing more trees everyday.

But I do still have some problems with it. OneNote seems very hard to organize and sort things, or maybe I just haven't found a good way to do it. It doesn't seem to be like Word, where I can easily set up a master folder for each semester and then subfolders for each class. I kind of have it like that now, but I can't seem to keep last semester's stuff easily accessible, and it took me hours to get it as set up as it is. I'd like to just have tabs along the side for each semster, click on those, and then tabs for each class, but it's not that simple.

Also, it was very confusing getting the lectures into OneNote - you can't just copy and save, you have to "print to OneNote" and sometimes it ends up sideways or something if you don't remember to change the print settings depending on format of lecture (usually PDF or Powerpoint.) And a lot of profs still make last minute changes to their lectures, so what you downloaded at the beginning of the semester or even just yesterday might not be the current version. Then I'm frantically scanning the version on the big screen and comparing it to my version and trying to scribble in any changes, while completely missing whatever is being said. Very annoying, and usually it's just a couple word that doesn't really change anything. Some of these profs just really see to like to do pointless last-minute tweaking.

But overall, I do feel lucky for the way KSU does it, I'm really surprised all schools aren't doing it like this.
