First day back for us too! Break definitely could have been a little longer, but now that the semester is here I am ready to power through it! Good luck everyone 🙂
First day back today. It was so long. I think I am going to like most of the classes but I am a little worried about one of them. We lost 2 people from last semester but gained 5 transfers. We actually added a guy to the class bringing our guy total up to 14 lol
First day back was yesterday and we watched a segment of School House Rock in neuro. It was AMAZING. 😀
Is anyone else dreading this semester? I'm only on my second day, but all I hear from the upperclassmen is that this is the worst semester. I'm trying to stay positive, but when professors who were super nice last semester say, "Unfortunately, this is not going to be an easy class..." I tend to start panicking.
We just got our schedule today and woah...I am no longer looking forward to this semester. I hope I survive - it's INSANITY!
Dear Pathology,
please die.
carry on!

First day back for UT. I'm both glad to be back, and feeling like I've been beat over the head. ><
I definitely need to get back on a regular sleep schedule though. A month of staying up until at least midnight did not work so well with waking up at 6:30 am today.
Surviving through Krakowka is a rite of passage at OSU. You'll be fine, and so will everyone else.

we have so much free time this semester, of course it is great i love it!! however, im not taking advantage of it for studying purposes. why do i never learn from the past?!?! i was DYING last semester and when i think back on it im surprised i made it through, why cant i use this free time to catch up on studying?! sighh
tommorrow is happy hr, meeting pre vets (yay!), pig roast, then bar after. and ironically my bf says he wants to come out, which is great because ive been asking him to come out to meet my friends more. but this means another night of not studying. 🙁 i only have myself to blame.
this weekend im gonna hit the books like no other!
This has been a good week! I found a summer job doing a research project on dogs (which took a huge load off my back, as I was getting nervous) and we've had some great speakers.
Yesterday we had Dr. Pajor from the University of Calgary vet school, and Dr. Broom from the University of Cambridge, and then today we had Dr. Temple Grandin come and give a talk! She was really great and her talk was really interesting. It turns out my animal behaviour prof was a PhD student with her at the University of Illinois. Anyway, that was a fantastic end to the week! Hooray!
How dare you love cardio.....haha. It's at least interesting to say the least. Severe insomnia trying to sleep the night before our first day. That is what I get for sleeping in until 11 every day 😴
Unfortunately we lost two people, but it does feel strangely good to be back. I'm sure I'll change my mind in about two weeks!
I haven't started vet school yet but OneNote came on the new computer I got for Christmas and I use it for my undergrad classes and LOVE it. I love importing the PowerPoints and I can pay attention to what the lecturer is actually saying because writing down the notes doesn't take forever. I can highlight things, make math formulas, record voice and video, and everything is extremely organized. I love it!
...... The professors tend to post their powerpoints online after lecture instead of before..... Some don't post their powerpoints at all. .....
So I gave up, and starting toting the huge, thick stack of printed notes to class like everyone else.
I'm not understanding. If they are using powerpoints in class, and not posting until afterwards, what printed notes are you bringing to class?
Hmm. Well, that's strike 2 for Ohio then. The first strike being cost. Looks like I've gotta do some more thinking on this decision. 🙁
At the beginning of each quarter, we buy a big ol' stack of printed notes. Usually costs somewhere between $50-$100. Some of the printed notes are just a copy of the powerpoint, which is later posted online (making me wonder why I paid for it). A lot of times they make adjustments to the powerpoint after we buy a printed copy, meaning that the printed version will be missing some information (again, annoying).
Other times the printed notes are in "book form" where everything is written out, while the powerpoint posted online is a brief outline. This can actually be quite helpful, as it often avoids the need for textbooks. However, it is difficult to follow along in class and take notes on something that looks like a textbook.
There have been issues in certain classes where the printed notes we buy aren't complete, and are missing certain lectures, so we have to keep track of which lectures we have copies for and which are only online.
As you can see, this gets very confusing. It sounds like Dean Sander is trying to streamline the process so it is more consistent, but the faculty drags thier feet.
Most people don't even bother using laptops in class, and just take notes on paper since we are paying for it every quarter!
I just have to say I love our parasitology professor. I will now and forever think of hookworms crawling through human skin saying "this is not a dog!" in cute squeeky voices.![]()

Thanks for the info. I'm usually super slow and stubborn when it comes to changing the way I take notes. Like after high school I was so stuck on using a notebook and pencil to take notes, and I never had an instructor use powerpoints until my second semester of biology freshman year. And I HATED it. She didn't make it so you could print out the slides, so you had to scramble to get everything written down, since it was already written down for her she felt like she could go really fast. Then when I got to Ohio State, ALL the teachers used powerpoint and posted the lecture slides online, and I was SO attached to my notebooks that I made it really hard on myself by refusing to print out the slides and continuing to use a notebook. Then I finally caved and started printing out the slides, and I really liked it so I did it, and then it seemed all of a sudden NONE of my teachers were posting slides. Now I got this new computer with OneNote, love it, and use it in every class, and all of a sudden I have a (really, really young) teacher in a women's studies class who doesn't let us use computers in class because she wants us all to "connect" to each other. Ugh.
But that's a little frustrating that sometimes they don't post the powerpoints until after lectures at the CVM. What's the point, then, you know? I guess I could take notes on paper at school, and then go home and transfer those to the powerpoints in OneNote. That could be a sort of study tool. This is going to be interesting for sure, no matter what!
I think my problem is that I also interviewed and was accepted at Kansas State, and I can't help compare to the way things are done there. At Kansas State, everyone buys the same laptop as part of their tuition, and everyone uses OneNote, and all the professors provide notes in Powerpoint form that are loaded onto OneNote before class. It seems so organized and convenient compared to Ohio State! Ultimately I chose Ohio State because the price was right. And it is an amazing school.
I just wish we could have organization even within each class. When you have 15 different lecturers for one class alone, and each lecturer is using a different format for teaching, it drives me crazy! Some people feel the way I do, and others don't seem to mind at all. Maybe you aren't a control freak like me and you won't care. 🙂
