Class of 2015 (Application cycle 2010-2011)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks for your input, I really do appreciate it.

I've received a response from a few admissions counselors and so far they're all saying that they're perfectly fine with me taking the class at a CC, and that I won't be at a disadvantage for not taking it at UCI. 🙂

That's a good news. Then, go ahead and take it @ CC. It's nice to save big bucs u know... especially during the times like this. 👍

I think I finished my PS today. I got my Interfolio up and running. Now I just need to figure out what each school I attended needs for me to do about transcripts. Woo Hoo!

I have been updating my 2010 application with the intention to transfer it over when the 2011 application opens up May 3rd. I have never applied to schools, I keep pushing it off. Well, I just entered in all of my classes from undergrad today (I graduated in 2008). cGPA 3.21, nsGPA 3.74 sGPA 2.76. 😱 Sitting for the MCAT 6/17/10. Am I totally screwed? Thanks for any input.

retake science courses where you got a C- or below. You should try to get it up over 3.2 at least in my mind. So retake first and get the sci to at 3.0 so you dont get rejected automatically during primary screening. I think most school are at a min 3.0 but i could be wrong on this. Maybe someone else can confirm minimum sgpa during primaries

Yeah, apparently senior year second semester my head was in the clouds when it came to Genetics. The only prob is, all of the schools around me in Boston have Genetics as a spring semester class so I wouldn't be able to take it until Jan 2011. Do you think I could get away with listing it as "retake" on AACOMAS apps and still get some secondaries sent?

I have almost the same problem. I got a D in Molecular Biology Fall 2009 (last semester) but it's only offered every fall (I've tried looking elsewhere but class not offered / not same credits as my original school). I want to retake it but like I said I won't be able to until this Fall 2010.

So how would I go about putting this on my application? I really don't want to incorporate this "D" into my science GPA.

I think you would include it in the application, but list it as a repeated course rather than "none" as you would for other courses. Then enter the course again but for the fall 2010 semester as to be completed. I'm not sure if it will be included in the calculation in the mean time or not.

Hey Guys,

I can't wait to interview you guys! This is my first year being an interviewer and I'm so psyched!

Hey guys!

Just wondering how the verification process works? If I send my application sometime in June, but I am retaking some courses in the fall 2010 and spring 2011, and I take the MCAT in June, how will that affect my application being verified and reviewed?

Let's say hypothetically, I take the MCAT once in June, but I have to retake it. Can I schedule a retake before I get my scores back?

You should try to get your sGPA up. The minimum for most schools is 2.75 so you technically meet the minimum, but try to get it up. Also just as a warning medical schools wont take any of the prereqs if you have a C- in them.

Hey Random question
For submitting out transcripts do we need to have our schools put our AACOMAS ID on them or is the SSN fine?

The transcript you send in, and all classes completed by the time you submit your application will be what counts in verification. I do believe though that you can list future courses you plan on taking and designate them as retakes. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

As for the MCAT, it takes about a month to get the scores back. So the earliest you'll get them back is early July. You could retake in late July or August, but it all depends on the availability of seats for the specific test day.

hmm. . . some how studying for my immunology test turned into listening to Minus the Bear and browsing the SDN forums. Anyway, just took the MCAT (4/23) and will be applying this cycle.

Where is everyone applying to?

KCOM and CCOM for sure. Not sure where else quite yet. Thinking prob ~10-15 schools. You?

Broadly and widely. PCOM, VCOM, UNECOM, NSUCOM, CCOM and AZCOM definately...probably 5-6 more. UMass, Tufts, and maybe 3-5 more allopathic schools.

I'm applying to Western, CCOM, KCOM, PCOM, VCOM, and probably many more. Trying to decide where to apply right now.

NSU-COM (1st choice), CCOM, RVUCOM, and PCOM for sure. I'll probably apply to ~10 total.

Wow, no PNWU even though you're from Seattle?

I have a family so I'm trying to stay in the NW, PNWU and Western-Lebanon are my two I'm really hoping for.

My top choice is Western - Lebanon, I probably will apply to PNWU but its not my top 5. I have been out to Yakima and have seen the campus and its basically a just a small building with nothing around it. The town isn't that amazing either. Truthfully could't see myself living there for 2 years. Lebanon is a great town, its small but still has a relatively cute downtown area.

Oh also, Yakima has quite a bit of gang and drug activity. If you are bringing you family with you, I would highly suggest Lebanon because there is less gang and drug activity.

I'm applying to my state MD schools, LMU, WCU, LECOM-B, VCOM, NSU, and a few others. What's everyone's top DO pick?

PCOM, CCOM, AZCOM, Western-Lebanon, PNWUCOM, KCUMB,AT Still AZ, MSUCOM

BritfutureDO: I agree Yakima is def. not a place I would want to live.

Thats not true at all. Only certain schools have the requirement. In fact a surprising number of schools dont have this rule. For example I can apply to 19 DO schools as Canadian, and only SIX of those schools state you need a C or higher. I PM'd a few Canadians at DO schools and one said he got in with a C- in organic, another got a C- in a first year chem

Having a C- is by no means an advantage, and of course it pulls your GPA down. I think one is fine if you have make up for it other good marks. Also, a C- obviously closes the doors on those schools that have the C or higher requirement on pre-reqs

My wife and I heard this and were really bummed, then we went to visit it didn't seem that bad. We actually went looking for trouble (not so much as looking for a fight as looking in some of the more "ghetto" regions) and had a hard time finding it.
We didn't find the city as bad as many claimed, though it could have been because it was during the holidays, either way I live in a similar city so it won't be exactly a cultural shock.
The main thing I love is that PNWU is one of the few schools that require (or offers) medical Spanish. It seems like PNWU really is trying to look out for the Yakima community.

Either way I won't know which school I prefer until interviews, who knows I may end up at LMU or LECOM-Bradenton, a bit further than I had planned

Pretty sure this is all you can do, you HAVE to list it, and then list the new class as "in progress"

Yeah I understand that I have to put it on my application but I don't know how the grade is incorporated or not into my GPA

This is my first time through this process as well but I can't imagine it could be incorporated as anything but a "D". Schools will be able to see you are going to retake though.

I think it's a good list of DO schools, and I don't mean to come across in the wrong way, but if money is a factor for you, I'm not sure how smart it is to apply to 5 MD schools based on your science GPA - I think unfortunately you might get weeded right from the get-go.

But if you have connections, done research at any of these MD schools, then by all means go for it! Best of luck either way.

DO schools: CCOM, PCOM, Western, KCOM, and NYCOM.

MD schools: all med schools in California, probably 10-15 more OOS. I haven't made a list yet. 🙂

Where is everyone applying to?

Jefferson (first choice), Penn (will probably supplant Jeff if I get in and they give me monies... they seem to be very generous), Temple, Drexel and PCOM. My husband and I grew up in Philly, most of our family and friends are here. He just got a great new job so we don't want to leave the area.

To all Canadian students....LMU-DCOM changed its criteria for all international students. Unless you studied at LMU, no internationals will be accepted. Sorta sucks.....we are down to 18 now

boo-urns!

Woohoo! Just called like 20 DO's today and am going to shadow 2 in the upcoming weeks. One of them ONLY does OMM so it should be a good experience to talk about in interviews. This was the last thing (other than my PS) I was really worried about so I'm glad to have it underway..

I do not know if this has been talked about or not yet but I was wondering about secondary applications. I will be sending in my app within the first week or two that it opens. How long after do the schools usually send their secondaries out after the first application? I am wondering because I am in the process of getting a couple more letters and I know you usually would send in the letters along back with the secondaries...correct?

I just tried signing into my 2010 AACOMAS application to add stuff with the intention to copy over the application when the 2011 opens on May 3rd. Up until last weekend I could, but today for some reason I can't edit or add anything. Anyone else having this issue?

Hey
Each school ia different if you look at last years thread you can see on average how long it took. Also some schools have theirs online so you can get started early. The earliest date that the schools will look at secondaries is either 6/1 or 7/1 depending on the school.

Hi everyone,
Im planning on applying for the 2010-11 application cycle. As of now, my top choices are LECOM-Erie, OUCOM, DMUCOM, VCOM and PCOM.
I am an Ohio resident. After this semester I will have taken all my pre-req's minus biochem, and I have a 3.2 gpa, 3.0 science gpa. I am graduating in dec 2010 from the university of miami fl witha bs in biology. I have not taken the mcat but plan on doing so June 17th. My concern is that in some of the pre-req's I have gotten C's, even though I worked really hard in them(the science classes here are really challenging and not very good prof's). My dad is a DMUCOM alum and he has helped me make some connections at DO schools. What re my chances with a lower end science gpa and some C's in pre-req's? any advice would be greatly appreciated!🙂

I'm in the same boat with the exact same GPA's (give or take a couple hundredths). I think from what I've ascertained over the past few months that we should be alright if we get a competitive MCAT score. I just took mine last week so we'll see how it went.

Is there a list/source to see which schools do and do not have a strong in-state bias?

Some schools don't list their in-state/out-of-state demographics, so I'm not sure if I should apply to them.

Thanks! 🙂

Hi all,
Got interviewed for 2013 class, got wait listed, and didn't get in. I also got laid off from work,(another bad year)🙁 got offered an opportunity to go to nursing school all expenses paid. Took it. so, I'm in nursing school. Going well. CRNA is the back up to med school. (hoping I won't need the back up plan). Applying again this cycle, just waiting to hit the send button on June 1.
I am conflicted on how it will look on my application. any thoughts??????

I'm pretty new posting on here and this is my first time applying, but imo I think it might look bad if you took a nursing spot without the intention of actually finishing it and becoming a nurse. That's a spot that could have gone to someone who really wanted to be a nurse.

But I do understand the desire to have a backup plan.

hey guys... i have a 'c-' in orgo2 do you know where I can find what schools will not accept the minus
