My MIL smuggled hard liquor onto a cruise by repurposing wine bottles. It was a network marketing cruise (think "body wraps"), so of course all those women need THAT much wine, right?

except we're all veterinarians, and veterinarians are all money grubbing jerks who HATE all living beings. you might have better luck finding feelings over on the psychiatry forum
 
Guys tell me about contacting references you haven't spoken to in a year but that would be great references for what you're applying for. (Preferably gloss over the part about how I should have been a good human and kept in contact with these important people because I didn't 🙁 )

I wanted to touch base with you because I heard about an exciting new opportunity with [blah-blah-blah] and I wondered if you could provide a reference? Or, at least, that's how chronically awkward people who never could master the art of staying in touch do it. Individual results may vary.

Thank you, though. One person is a coworker confidant. The second person I've been close to for a long time and I imagine he will be his usual curt, adorable self. (I envision myself sending said bubbly email and him be like, "Of course." end email.) My third would be a professor from school and although our class sizes are much smaller than other schools I'm pretty paranoid that he'll be like "Uh, who are you again?" Which should be a sign that maybe not the most detailed reference BUT he's in the field and I think would be a solid 3rd.

Damn you, lack of social graces.

Just to add to what pooter said, I always like to offer them a way out too, like "I know you are super busy, so I completely understand if you aren't able to" or something along those lines.

Definitely! Pretty sure my emails have always ended like, "But I totally understand you are a super busy important person and I am but a lowly peasant and I totally understand if you're too busy or too important or you just don't feel like it or maybe you secretly hate me but I think you're great....ok bye!"
 
This week at work has me scratching my head and going WTH? For context, we're 24/7 ER but don't have specialists in an area where there are lots of specialty referral hospitals. In practice, this means that we get walk-ins, cost-concerned clients, and rdvm referrals for "stable emergencies" (i.e. "babysit this cat I've unblocked and send it back in the morning"). The true disasters mostly go down the road to Fancy ER or get Discharged to Jesus depending on the owner. Except for this weekend when we had four patients on pressors simultaneously, two of which were on two or more pressors. In an ICU that only has 10 cages. I'm not exactly complaining, but seriously, WTH?
 
for those in residencies, do you get to read all your applicants files? we were given access to all of ours today and it has been very interesting to read (and makes me very very curious to know what was said in my LORs)

We don't get to take a new resident for next year. 🙁 Our program was approved for it, but then the university said, 'haha jk we don't actually have money to pay for the additional spot we said you could have.'

During my internship all the doctors (smaller practice) got a stack of the pre-screened apps to look through and make notes to give cliffnotes versions to everyone else. I got to see a few one day and it was, umm, interesting.

Yeah all the residents and faculty go through all the applications and we rank everyone in teams (faculty-resident).
 
My parents asked me today if I had thought any more about what I might like to do with my life when I finish my residency in 2.5 years. Haha parents, no that is still a very, very long ways away.
 
Got my first subpoena last week. Nothing relating to me or my practice, fortunately--it's for a cruelty case. Still, I'm not relishing the thought of explaining to a jury why I euthanized the last survivor from said cruelty case. 🙁 Can I just go back to stressing over the next biochem exam already?:help:

This little lamb, named Burger, is the highlight of my life at the moment. Hopefully the other ewes will lamb soon. Sorry FB friends, I'm obsessed. He came out pushing 12 lb and is a ****ing monster now. He was 6 days old in this pic.
 
So first job I applied to the day after Christmas - no response. I'm thinking the federal hiring freeze may have some influence on it but it still means I haven't heard anything. Possible job in the wings is still possible but no actual posting yet. So I applied to a third - still in my current line of work but SO close to home and at least on paper FAR better than where I am now. Still no word, although the posting is now closed and I'm paranoid that means they've already selected someone.

I need to get out of where I am now for so many reasons. Sigh.

Is there a way to follow-up with job 3?
 
Feeling so stuck where I am. None of the jobs I've applied to have come through- I'm under qualified/they've found someone else/whatever. On an intellectual level I understand that it is not my fault and is not a reflection of me as a person or as a veterinarian but damn do I feel like a dud. My skills as a technician are improving while my skills as a doctor feel as though they're rotting away. The environment feels more and more toxic every day. I know on some level it's my acknowledgement that I'm unhappy that's allowing me to feel more and more unhappy, a vicious cycle or whatever, and I'm trying desperately to look at every day at work as an opportunity to just better myself as a doctor, build my skills, etc. But it's a rough time for me right now 🙁 And sorry to keep filling this thread with my mopery but I'm sure my husband is tired of hearing it.

I know what you mean, THR. And I'm sorry you can't find an out. Have you talk to management about the bolded part?
Have you and the hubs considered moving further south? There's tons of work in NOVA, Richmond, VA beach/eastern shore, even down here in the mountains.
