Class of 2016....how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah, I pay $700 a month for my studio, but it does include electric, gas, trash, cable, and internet 🙂. So, total I pay what you pay for everything including my dog.

Wow. I've got a 2 bed/2 and 1/2 bath town house and I'm only paying $760. Utilities aren't included, but we're thinking probably about $150 a month.

you couldn't live in a cardboard box in davis for that.

Hahaha. I get so jealous when I see the midwestern rent prices. I adore my apartment but I am definitely paying a premium for the space in an already expensive city... I miss rural life.

Seriously. Although, I don't think my apartment is too bad for Philly. I mean, I know I could get something a bit cheaper but they were a little further away than I wanted to be my first year and I didn't want to commute from a suburb or something like that. I'm paying just under $700 a month for a 2br/1ba apartment. Doesn't include utilities, which kind of sucks, but I'm hoping that will only be like $100 extra, give or take a few depending on the month. However, there aren't any pet deposits or breed/weight restrictions which is nice. Although, we might try to get the rent lowered because it was advertised as a 2br/2 ba and there definitely is only one bathroom. At least that's my parents' plan.

Grr. I decided on a laptop and went to go order it because I need it for orientation and I don't have enough money in my checking account now that the deposit for my apartment went through...

Ugh I know the feeling 🙁
I don't even have money to drive back up to start classes :uhno:

Emiloo, I love your new pigs. And I'm sorry about your gas money. 🙁

I'll be able to afford it once the half of the deposit from my roommate gets added to my account, but I don't know when that's going to happen. It's still under review according to PayPal...But gosh darn it are computers expensive. And I have no idea how strict Penn is on their requirements. Like, do I really need Windows Professional?? No. Thank you for limiting me to laptops I can customize.

This is $1000/month in Davis w/ no utilities, easily. My 2/2 apartment was $1325/month.

Now I'm in a 2/1 duplex that's $1375/month.

And Davis isn't too bad compared to, say, the bay area or socal.

Well, the apartment is actually $1395 a month, so I was just looking at my half of the rent.

😱
I only pay $380 a month!!
Holy crap I can't even imagine! 😱

I know people paying that much to live in a crowded house. Aka 8 br/2ba. Not worth the stress. I love peaceful living.

ahh I couldn't figure out how you were thinking that was expensive for what I know of Philly, haha. Yeah I thought it was pretty similar. The place where I lived before was really crappy and one of the cheaper places here.

Haha. Yeah. Sorry for the confusion. I've seen places where I would pay like $400 a month and definitely not the nicest. One was kind of decent but further away than I wanted to be.

Sort of off-topic from the current discussion, but...

As I'm packing to move, I found my lab coat from Halloween back when I was a wee one! 😀 It says
"Dr. (my last name)
Veterinarian"

It's awesome remembering that this is what I knew what I was going to do when I grow up, and finding that reminder in storage.

I'm thinking about wearing it to the first day of anatomy lab. 😎

That's ridiculously adorable. Please wear it to lab!

Ugh. I paid like 1k to share a bathroom with 4 people and to share a room in pooptastic south central LA. And my bathroom and bedroom were flooded by their crap plumbing system. Ridiculous. I love this apartment here in Davis.

Woah. You win.
In San Jose, I was paying about 550 a month to share an apartment with five other people above an alley. But seriously, LA just sucks. 😱

Good luck DVM Dream, you'll have to come back and report how your first day was. :luck:

Ohio starts orientation in 9 days!!! EEEEEK!

Had a rough time moving in. My family just left this morning and I'm feeling a little lost. Hopefully it'll get easier as it goes...

Solution? Adopt something cuddly! You can't be lonely with a wee puppy nudging you 😍

Not enough time for a puppy, unfortunately 🙁 I can't "adopt" either, because I'm not allowed to bring anything home (nothing to do with animal on breaks and stuff). I'm planning on fostering, but the local shelter I want to foster for has a 5 week (!!!) orientation. So I need to do that first. My roommate's getting a kitten from a different shelter, but she hasn't been spayed yet.

So no cuddles for me at the moment 🙁

You can come visit my pup anytime you like NStarz 👍. How does fostering work? Can you take in puppies without their mom (like 1-2 weekers?). I've always wanted to do that over the winter when there aren't any wild babies (yes I'm the crazy OMG it's a baby creature type 😀).

Thanks guys... 😍

Today was just orientation stuff so the biggest problem was just trying to stay awake. Tomorrow is more orientation and then classes start on Wednesday. The best news was that I got my student loan money.. :soexcited:

Once the check clears, I will no longer be broke and living of credit cards. 😀

Good luck to everyone else going to orientation soon/starting this week.

I know how this feels. I was so glad that my mom was able to come with for the first two weeks while I got settled in. It is hard to move to a new area where you do not know anyone and meeting others is kind of forced upon you. It will get better as time goes on. I have already meet so many nice people in my class I can only imagine it getting better as we all settle in and get to know one another more.

Awww. I'm glad your first day of orientation went well!!! I'm super jealous and wish I was starting. Yes, I know I'm a little crazy, but I just want to get started because then I'll sort of have a life again. And yes, school to me is a life since I'm around other people besides my family.

My roomie and I are discussing colors and what we have for the apartment and everything. I just can't wait to move in.

I'm having a tough time 🙁. This break up is making me really miss the life I used to have. I'm realizing I can't really be myself without this person in my life and it's really troubling that every where I go in this town reminds me of him 🙁. I just don't have the excitement I used to have....

Doing something I've never done before, line dancing, to try to get my mind off of this heartbreak.

I had the same problem. Then I told my parents that I just wouldn't visit them unless I could bring my critters. They decided that I can bring my puppy and visit them for day trips (so I can come home to care for bunny) IF I never let my dog in the house. 🙄

Yeah, I don't know where my animal-loving gene came from .

p,s, Bunnies are easier to hide than puppies... I hid mine in my parents' bathtub when I stayed overnight during the move 😉. What they don't know won't hurt them.

p.p.s. Glad orientation is going well!

Yes you can!!! And I might join you for line dancing and regret it lol. I mean, what else do I have to do.. We don't even have Internet!

Nordstroms done. Onto sephora.

I wish it were that simple. My dog probably wouldn't like another dog in the house, and my cat wouldn't like another cat. So it's not really a matter of my parents restricting pet ownership--just that my currents animals in the house wouldn't like a newbie.

Squirrels--not sure how fostering works. I need to go to the orientation, but it's like 20 hours of classes over 5 weeks, and I'm not sure if I can squeeze that into my schedule this semester.

At my shelter in NJ, at least, we rarely got itty bitty puppies. We usually had bottle baby kittens available for foster. Occasionally, we had a littler of puppies or a single that needs to be fostered for a couple of weeks before adoption. Kittens were much more common (I assume that's that same everywhere, because of feral cats and kitten season). But baby kittens are also super cute!!!

I do kittens all the time and I love it. I haven't found it too hard to give them up. Usually once they get to 7-8 weeks they are so rambunctious that I'm really ready to get rid of them haha.

I definitely read this as you wanting to foster squirrels to cheer yourself up.

Womp. Just had to ask my parents for a loan to be able to buy my laptop so that it has the chance of arriving before orientation starts. I hate asking them for money like that...

Now that's an idea, have you considered wildlife rehab NStarz? I'm going to the Ohio Wildlife Center probably this weekend 🙂. There is nothing on the planet that will cheer you up like holding a tiny baby squirrel, bunny, or opossum, at least not for me. Brightens even the worst days 😍. I, however, am trying to resist the urge to take baby squirrels to my apartment.
