Class of 2016....how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Now that's an idea, have you considered wildlife rehab NStarz? I'm going to the Ohio Wildlife Center probably this weekend 🙂. There is nothing on the planet that will cheer you up like holding a tiny baby squirrel, bunny, or opossum, at least not for me. Brightens even the worst days 😍. I, however, am trying to resist the urge to take baby squirrels to my apartment.

Truth! Giving baby raccoons baths because they made a mess in their dinner (AGAIN)?? Best day(s) ever!

I'm sorry, CFC. 🙁
I know it sounds stupid, but as others have said, this is the time when you really *do* get to be yourself. And you won't be alone -- you'll have us!

All I've experienced with raccoons is the screaming 🙁, they are sooooooooooooooooooooo loud! We can't rehab them where I'm from though, so I have never really cared for them. I will at the wildlife center though 👍. I've heard coons are pretty awesome but needy. I think I'll always prefer my little squirrels, bunnies, and opossums. Coons are just too big as babies, I like itsy bitsy like 30 grams or less, usually less. The smaller it is the more I like it 😀

They are cute in a rambunctious terrible-twos baby kinda way. Where as baby squirrels and opossums that are being syringe fed are more like cute furry newborns. I think you will love raccoons and I'm glad you get to experience them!! Especially when they are only a month old and group housed in kennels (still need a heat lamp) and roll around wrestling all day making a mess of their meals and generally trying to get into trouble. They are so dang mischievous that you can't help but love them. And at my rehab center they called me the 'squirrel lady' because I volunteered my entire shift to the squirrel feedings during squirrel season. So I'm not even 'coon biased 🙂

Womp. Just had to ask my parents for a loan to be able to buy my laptop so that it has the chance of arriving before orientation starts. I hate asking them for money like that...

I hear ya.

Speaking of LOANS - my financial aid STILL has not shown up where it should be on my tuition bill. Which is due in 3 days.

The last time I talked to them, they told me "it should" show up as a pending credit on my bill b Aug 6th, and to call them back if it didn't, but don't worry, "it should" be there. Weeeelll it's not, and now that we're down to the wire their phone lines are completely tied up.

Always something, isn't it. 🙄

I just had my first experience with them this summer, and you're right about the screaming. They are adorable in that purring, bottle-feeding phase. Then they stop purring and start growling and screaming. They grow up so fast *sniff*

Eep. That's nerve wracking. I've already had one bill due in July I think (or I completely misunderstood this whole process), but Penn said they just put a "hold" on it until your loans come in, so I don't have to worry about anything. And it's awesome since I'm IS I actually have a negative balance. Not by much, but it's still like "yay rent money!!"

Finaid fixed it! They actually fixed it the day I contacted them about something through e-mail! Good on them. =D

So much nicer seeing a negative balance.

I'm definitely a fan of the bigger babies. Best babies so far that I've worked with were a baby beaver and 3 fishers. 😍😍
On a not so local wild animal front, there is a slim possibility I may be raising a tiny sloth in a month or two!!!!! Lots of things have to happen for it to be true. But I'm ready to die from excitement.

A sloth would be sweet! How in the world did you get signed up to maybe take one home? That would be amazing.

First day of class today. Had one "real lecture" that was 50 minutes long. They covered basic terminology in that one lecture. The terminology that took about 3 or 4 lectures to cover in undergrad. Overall, it wasn't too bad, just review for now. I am sure I won't be saying this same thing next week.

Orca, how was your first day? 🙂

Hi everyone,

I just came across this thread. I'll be starting at K-State on the 20th with orientation on the 15th (one week away!!!) Just wondering if there's anyone else starting K-State in the fall?
Here's what I'll be taking:

Gross Anatomy
Microanatomy
Integration 1
Veterinary Physiology
Career Development

along with 3 electives:

3-D Anatomy Imaging of the Dog
History of Vet Med
Practical Use and Interpretation of Vet Literature

I'd love to hear what first year is like at all the other schools too. it'll be interesting to compare.

I'm SO excited!

Good luck everyone! We can do it!

Just arrived in Davis. I can't decide how to arrange my furniture, so I'm sitting on the floor eating a sandwich instead. So many decisions!

I'm not doing as awful as I thought I'd be. I'm a bit homesick, but I'm doing okay for now.

Hopefully this trend continues.

I'm sorry I've been so busy! I hope everyone is doing well and getting excited for school!
We started school this week and I am so stoked already. I love Edinburgh rain or shine and Skype/facetime has staved off any feelings of homesickness. I'm just so darn happy that I decided on Edinburgh. 🙂

You'll have moments here and there but it will get better with time. We're always here for all those moments, good and bad 🙂

Better than having no furniture (except for an office chair that you switch with roommate to use countertop as a table).

I'm shadowing a vet at a small zoo. The past 2-3 years their two-fingered sloth has had a baby and abandoned it around September/October. They haven't been able to get one to survive more than 24 hours. Because they're a zoo they don't have a huge about of experience hand rearing things, especially not something as challenging as a newborn sloth. So because I actually have experience with them I may get to take it. We'll see though, they aren't quite convinced.

Sooooooooo jealous!

So I just realized that I'm moving into my apartment next week...probably like Monday night and I have done absolutely nothing in regards to packing and getting things together. Commence panic mode.

Back in Columbus. Got a brand new AC and my apartment is now nice and cool 👍. I really like my apartment a lot, it's small, but it's all my space and it's plenty of space for me and my Boston Terrier. Nice and quiet too 🙂. Plus all my classmates have been awesome that I've met so far. Class of 2016 is gonna rock.

NStarz, glad you're feeling better 👍, I'm super close with my family too, so I'm sure the homesickness will start for me soon, but just spent the last 3 days with my family and was so anxious to get back to Columbus.

I have retained quite a bit of what I learned in undergrad, surprisingly. I have discovered though that with the two year gap between undergrad and vet school while I have retained the basics of most things, I have forgotten some of the details. So I will be going through notes and reminding myself of those things that I have forgotten. So far, the gap without school is not as bad as I was expecting.

YAY! Good for you! 😀 I remember you trying to make that decision, I'm glad it worked out how you wanted it to. 👍

Well, (un)officially moved into the house for the year, the mattress is coming tomorrow (yay!) and orientation is in like 6 days! (Though the rest of the furniture has to wait another 3 weeks...)

And good luck to everyone who has already started class! This is gonna be an awesome year!

One more week until moving day :scared:

I'm on the fence about whether to bring my tiny pets with me or not. I have a 2.5 year old hamster and a ~1 year old betta. Both are in good health and have moved with me before. I think Scrappy (the betta) could survive the 3 hour drive but I'm not sure about Butterscotch (hamster). She is in really good health, still runs on her wheel and forages for her food, still climbs, no signs of illness, but she is kind of old for a hamster. They would be stay with my SO if I decided not to take them so I know they will be well taken care of. I just love them and enjoy taking care of them and would miss them so much. I don't want to be selfish, though. Any thoughts?

I've had hamsters for the past 4 years and they always travel back and forth with me to school (10 hour drive). My current hamster is almost 2 and he did fine on his most recent drive. He will be driving back to school with me in 2 weeks. I just make sure he had food, but I take his water drip away because it tends to just leak and cause a huge mess and wet the bedding. I offer him water when I stop. He sleeps for most of the way, but sometimes I can hear him shuffling around to find something to eat. My other hamster loved to run on her wheel when she was in the car. She also did really well in the car. I would just provide lots of bedding and a house (igloo) for security and comfort. Make sure the cage is secure.
My beta also drives back and forth with me. He has a "car seat"- a cardboard box with towels to secure him in. He rides in the front passenger seat and gets buckled in. Never had a problem with him either.🙂
Good luck to you and your hammy!

I traveled with my betta (3 hourish back and forth) and had a similar set-up - except on the passenger seat floor, with my car blanket curled around him to wedge him in. When I was a kid we moved my old guinea pigs from Canada to Texas in the back of a uhaul... I think you'd be fine as long as you've got AC or keep everything well ventilated.

I also took my beta on the 2 hours car trip. I just put him in a big screw-top tupperware container and padded him into place in the front seat. He even had to hang out for several hours before I was able to get his tank set up. Within 30 minutes of putting him back into the tank, he made a bubble nest.
Not sure about the hammie, though. I've never owned one (or taken one on a car trip).

I'm NOT nervous..... you people are nuts....... I still have a month till class starts back up again and I will savor every moment of it

Thanks for the advice and putting my mid at ease! I love the idea of a betta "car seat". Last move I put him in a small container and held him in my lap. It was ok for 15 minutes but I think 3+ hours of that would be a bit much. As long as they seem healthy the day of the move they're coming with me. Love my tiny pets 😍

3 days til I get hitched. 😀😀

Wedding gifts have already begun to arrive. It's ridiculous the things I'm excited about right now; linens and appliances and apartment deco? When did I grow up!?

And finally the fiance has started to get excited about moving down to Blacksburg. 😍 His only concern is making sure I don't abandon him in favor of cram jams. I'm sure we'll find a healthy balance. 🙂

But between all of that excitement, my prep for vet school has slowed to a crawl. My super-cheap textbooks are an edition off, but at this point I have to wait for my financial aid to hit my bank account before I can remedy the situation. And with everything I'm moving down to Blacksburg, I don't think I'm going to be able to get school supplies until after I'm down there (save myself the space in the Jeep).

But ohmygod, new school supplies. 😍

Also, cheap tip - Dollar Tree sells some handy desk organizing tools, looseleaf paper, notebooks, laundry detergent, hand soap, etc. =)

We really need a thread where vet students can compile all their thrifty tricks for saving some dolla bills!

Good to know about the office supplies- thanks!

(also CONGRATS on the wedding!! Being married to your best friend is the most wonderful thing in the world.)

3 days til I get hitched. 😀😀

Congrats on your upcoming marriage!!! So excited for you both! (And excited that I'll get to meet y'all soon)
I second Camelidcrazy by saying the being married to your best friend is definitely the best thing in the world! 😍

Speaking of spouses, my husband got a job in Roanoke. He was working before we were in Blacksburg a week. Gotta love it when a plan comes together.

😀 Thanks. And super yay for husband!!

No, not yet. Any suggestions?

Skinny 😛

Warning, you have to give them back at the end of AB 1 🙁 I didn't know and it made me really sad. I loved my little guy!

Where did all this clothing come from??? I went clothing shopping like once during the past year, but I swear the amount of stuff I have has multiplied...

Maybe it's because all I've worn this year is gym clothing or scrubs and I forgot what normal clothing looks like...

Same here. I am so happy I've taken cell bio, immunology, and a mechanisms of disease (intro path) course.

I know. I am already sad thinking about it. 🙁

I was thinking of naming him Hammie or George or maybe just Friend. 😛

I vote for George.

Apparently my anatomy cat is named Sally. (Groupmate come up with it on the spot). Today was a great day in lab. It's all starting to come together.

And I'm so :scared: that I didn't!!! Ack!

I think you'll be fine. If you get a good group, someone should probably be able to help. And, as least at NCSU, they expect you to know some, but there's a lot I don't know. And a lot that a lot of my classmates don't know.
