I can't believe that some schools actually allow people to take the exam at a later date... if you are having problems here, they will allow you to take the exam as "first sit" in August when those who are re-sitting take the exam... but it will not be the same format or same questions as that "first sit" exam.

I am so glad its not just my school! It is so frustrating when someone gets 3 days extra to study because they were at a "funeral", then they get to take the exact same exam as everyone else.

I think the "sick" card has been played at almost everyone one of our exams by someone. So frustrating.
 
We've only had it happen a few times so far. One girl showed up to take the test and the began throwing up... So I didn't mind that she got an extension. I would be super annoyed if it happened every test.


On another note: I hate epidemiology and it solidifies my decision not to pursue getting an MPH.

I can be annoying, but my school is really understanding about things that happen in your life. I'm not sure how soon the students have to make it up, but it's never usually very long. And I can understand needing to take an exam a little later after losing someone. I mean I know I wouldn't be able to focus well enough to study going through the grieving process. That being said, I haven't heard of any classmates abusing the system. It's amazing the attendance difference between exam days and lectures.

Agreed. I honestly don't care if anyone really needs to make up an exam for any reason. Hellz, if someone's pet died the night before, I'd be totally fine with them not coming in for the exam.

But we've all been there cramming at 3 am, where we WISH we just had one extra day to study. It would be very annoying to have someone actually be in that situation and realize all of the sudden that they are sick or something.
 
I just don't see why our grades can't be released before the people take the exam. I just want to know how I did (grades still aren't up 🙁 ). If a lot of people did that, it would make me mad, but really I'm the type that would move an exam up before back, so it doesn't really bother me. I just hate the delay in posting of grades.

Do your schools allow the death of a pet to count as a reason to get out of an exam? It suppisedly doesn't count at Penn. I wish it did since we lost our family dog last week a few days before my physio exam. It actually happened before my anatomy final but my mom held off on telling me since she knew I had a test the following morning.

I dunno, never asked. Even if it counted, I would think it'd be a very case by case scenario. Like if your pet was in the ER for 2 days and died very tragically or something, I think it might for some schools depending on how sympathetic your professor/dean was. But I kind of doubt family pets "back home" would count anywhere. The rule in each class for me has generally been that tests will not be moved for any circumstance other than grave illness or death in the immediate family. Of course that gets stretched a bit, but I don't think it stretches that far.

That's how ours is stated. And while I sadly agree that a family pet probably wouldn't count, it's rather unfortunate because it doesn't mean I was any less attached to him than if he was my own. And his death was rather unexpected...we were thinking that it would be several months from now at the least.

I was just curious if other schools actually explicitly included pets in their policies.
 
I do think it is great that the school is very flexible with the exams. It reassures me if ever had a family emergency I would not have issues, however, when the exam policies are more lax then undergrad, I just start to wonder. There are always people who abuse the system. I don't remember 1 class I took in UG where people who were making up an exam were given the exact same test that was issued on class day. I don't know, its just irritating when its every test. We only have a midterm and final a quarter, with 2 quizzes.

It definitely doesn't count here. One of my classmates had to out her dog down after a night-long emergency visit an hour before our first Phys exam, and administration said she still had to sit for it.

That situation is a little extreme but after hearing about some of the issues you guys are having at the othet schools, I do appreciate how strict admin is here regarding not missing exams. I think we've only had three or four where a person or two was legitimately ill or otherwiae incapable of taking it.

Exam #4 in 6 hours. It's been doped the "Trivial Pursuit of UF Vet school" Absolutely. Beyond. Exhausted. and I still have another one Friday. Also trying to do laundry and pack. Bleh.
 
Our grades were finally posted on Monday. Did a little lower than expected, but passed so it's all good 👍. Learning to lower my standards. Still crazy about anatomy and want an A in that (this semester is much easier, at least for me), but everything else I'm trying my best, but not expecting much. This semester has been rough!

Good luck Emiloo. Hang in there, it'll be Friday afternoon before you know it and you'll be free.
 
Got my phys midterm back and it's the best I've ever done in physiology, including undergrad 🙂 Still below the class average but it's a personal best so I'm happy 😀

Two weeks until the next set of exams.... I have finally started this: :scared:

I swear my stack of notes is a good 3-4 inches thick.... how will I ever learn it all??? :scared:
 
One more final stands between me and the last quarter of first year :luck:
 
3 more hours of work and then heading to the airport. So excited to be going home for a week of relaxation! 😀
 
Last week before spring break! I can not wait! I so need the brain break from everything.
 
Have the week off to study for exams, trying to make it through neurology today... on lecture 7 of 19... it is 9PM... I will not stay up any later than 2AM... I can do this, I can do this... :bang:

Exactly how I am spending spring break. Just glad to have the week off to catch up because we have 4 exams in the first 2 weeks back. So far I've caught up on pharmacology and nearly caught up in biology of disease 1. Not in the worst shape for anatomy already, but will study that sometime. Then there's biology of disease 2 (bacteriology), I'm just avoiding it, I need to get started on it! Maybe tomorrow 😀
 
So they changed our schedule and gave us Friday off!!! So spring break starts Thursday at 7 after my exec board meeting :claps:

Dang that royally sucks! I guess thats the good thing about having a quarter system. We just hand finals so we have a "phantom" week and then spring break. We get greeted with a quiz, but nothing to major.

We had finals last week and our phantom week is now. Spring break next week. Same.

It does stink, but I'd rather have the week off to study than have had all these exams before spring break.
 
We have a built-in week before each exam that we have no lectures, practicals or tutorials... A complete week off to study. That is what I am in the middle of right now. Exams are next week on Tuesday and Wednesday. :bang:

Easter Break starts next week on Wednesday... with copious amounts of alcohol drinking beginning at around 1:30PM...

So even if exams don't go well... I will hopefully have forgotten all about it rather quickly on Wednesday afternoon.

I pretty much only count on 2 real breaks each year, winter break and spring break. Any other "break" is really gonna be filled with studying so it doesn't really count as a break. I guess that would be an advantage of quarters, you'd have a break between them. 26 pages to go (out of 140) for the exam on Monday 👍, my brain is screaming no more though!

Almost at the point where I just want to say eff this, study as much as I can and actually get a decent understanding of the material instead of a half-ass one and then know I am going to fail the exams next week and just be ready to retake them in August and kick some serious exam butt then.....

But then I would really, really like to have the ability to go home this summer too.... so I keep frantically studying in hopes that a miracle will occur and that I will pass.
 
So I was informed tonight that several of my classmates thought I was "obnoxious on SDN" this time last year :laugh: My bad, I was a stressed out mess and probably WAS obnoxious. 😛

Large animal? Is it because of all the arteries and nerves in the lower limb? Our one anatomy assistant made an awesome recommendation to take a paper towel tube and make it into a leg. I did that (it is just above the carpus down) and it is super helpful.
 
So I'm moving to a new apartment for next year because we're adding another roommate. Until now, we've been having a hard time finding a place that was reasonably priced and gave us the amount of space we wanted. We found an amazing 3BR/2.5 bath house with a fenced in drive way , roof deck, basement, awesome kitchen, and large bedrooms. Its a little bit more than I want to pay, but its actually really reasonable for all that you getting. I mean, the master bedroom has a firplace in it and the one bathtub has jets. And it's owned by a current vet student who is graduating, so he doesn't care about pets abviously. What's not to like? But I having a little bit of a hard time committing because I was trying to live in a way that would leave me with some of my loan money left over so I could start paying off some of my undergrad loans or some of the interest. Both my roomies are 100% in and im just feeling a little pressured to say yes. They understand me worrying about the money, but they're both getting some family support where I'm not. I've even been considering the idea of living in one of the suburbs at an apartment above a vet hospital because I can get free rent if I work during the evening. That being said, I really like being near the school and know I can porbably afford this other house. Its just stressing me out a little bit.

That is stressful making the "financially responsible" decision and the one that will make you the most comfortable. I am kinda in the same spot, there is this one apartment I could get for free (utilities and all) and be in walking distance to school, but there are no pets allowed. On the other side I can just stay where I am at and pay medium-high rent 🙁

I have studied my way through the cardiorespiratory system AND the digestive system today alone.... 😀 (and it is only 11PM)

I have reproduction left and metabolism... keeping metabolism towards the end since we are given a book with all of the metabolic pathways during the exam and any questions asked about it will be interpretive based off those pathways.

Hoping to finish reproduction tonight and then just start to massively quiz myself Saturday, Sunday and Monday.....

Exams are Tuesday and Wednesday.... I will be so happy when they are done...and really, really :xf: that I pass.
 
Orca 2011 - it's understandable that financial responsibility is key and you should be commended for keeping your debts in mind, 4 years before they come due. While it would be great to pay down some of your undergrad loans and a bit of interest on vet school loans, is working nights something you'll be able to do consistently? I know I couldn't do it this year and especially with 2nd year being a killer, that would be my new nightmare. There's also the "time is money" to consider when adding more time to your daily commute. If the cushy new place is too much, maybe your roomie's would be willing to look a bit more for a place with less bells & whistles.

bbeventer - free rent and utilities - WOW, that would be so tempting until reaching that nagging rule of not having pets in residence. Of course, having alternative accomodations for the pet(s) might be okay.
