Class of 2016!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't know who to go for in the Superbowl. I'm a Bears fan so it's in my blood to loathe the packers. But the Steelers have too many rings already and I usually go for the underdogs.

Maybe I'll watch some nice Khan Academy videos instead....

Definitely stick with this feeling. PS is that Outsourced as your avatar?? If so, 👍

I could not root for the Packers even if someone paid me.

and YES! I love Madhuri. I can't believe a lamp shade was her halloween costume ahahahah. I've fallen a bit behind though 🙁 I stopped in the middle of the episode when Gupta was on stage

PS Gupta is from my hometown and he went to my rival high school

Man, yet again, a lot to catch up!

My ochem exam wasn't bad, just ridiculously long. One of my PIs is actually my professor and I expressed this to her and she said she knows and will account for it.

I've been in research since 4 ugh. And I screwed up one of our solution gah I don't know where my mind is. I also have family over and won't be home until 11. Oh well. Pulled out the mcat physics book and got done with kinematics. Not too bad 🙂 I have a timer to remind me to treat my cells haha

Good thing is that I'm not a big football fan so tomorrow I can do some homework and mcat studying 🙂

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Nice, man. Way to stay productive 🙂 I'll be locked up in the library studying mycology (so sad that the class that fulfilled my writing intensive requirement, lab requirement, and ecological requirement all in one was the 'all about fungus!' class) 😡

going to LA tomorrow for a neurosurgery conference super excited!

That's insane, imagine being in high school with Gupta.. And my favorite costume was Manmeet's chick magnet! It's just too good.

I saw the Outsourced movie over winter break, and the show is 100x better!

I hate those days where you have to stay in lab for the entire afternoon/evening. At least you got some good MCAT studying done...I might have to steal that idea next time I have to go in to run some tests!

Gotta love late nights at the labs! I remember getting a text from my PI one time at 12:30 am that a vector didn't work... went to the lab straight from a bar because my partner was sick. So glad I'm doing clinical research now... nobody comes for a session after 5pm or before 10am 😀

Boo! hahaha! best of luck on your MCAT and congrats for getting married.

Ha. Thanks, man. It's gonna be a brutal summer of studying coupled with listening to the whining about the things that aren't going right about planning...

Atleast I got the chief microbiologist job this summer and I still have shadowing to.. you know... escape.:meanie:

I finally decided to switch my MCAT books to the Berkeley Review ones even though I'm taking an actual class (my friend gave me her old books 😀) and life seems to much better now!!! I actually enjoy reading them more (and understand the material better) than the prep course ones. I guess we'll see how it plays out... Hope everybody's week is going well! Almost hump day! lol

It was Superbowl weekend, so I decided to take some time off from studying ( MCAT Physics, why do you hate me so) to do some partying. I was so conflicted in choosing who to root for in the game since I'm a die hard Niners fan, but I'm sort of relieved that the Steelers didn't win since when my Niners win this year, they'll have the record for most superbowls won and will remain undefeated in the big game.

Now its back to MCAT Physics :scared:

Since I finally made a profile I thought I should check in with my fellow 2016 hopefuls.

I didn't really care about the Super Bowl since the falcons weren't in it. Luckily, I drank enough at the party to last me for the rest of the semester. I shouldn't be distracted from studying.

MCAT studying sucks.

U guys getting ur LORs already? Wow, now I feel like I have to catch up!

I don't have anything exactly ready either. but, it's in the works. No worries, we have until may 1/ june... whatever 🙂

wow u guys make me feel bad. i'm taking 36 credits this yr, so i'm putting mcat off till sept. my apps gonna be completed just in time for the oct-deadline schools 🙁

Most people on here will tell you that's a bad idea and you might want to wait until next year to apply (depending on your GPA I suppose).

To put things in perspective, your application will be completed when a number of us have already been given acceptances, you will be given an interview when possibly half to 3/4 of the med school classes at those schools have been filled.

Actually, don't schools say that August is the latest MCAT they'll take anyway?

i'm not sure about all schools i have in mind right now but the ones i really like (UIC, loyola) actually have november and december deadlines. so the september mcat will suffice.

and you have a point on waiting, but for financial reasons i really have to get in this first try anyways. so really hope i beat the odds and make it anywhere really. :xf:

edit: september mcat will actually work for most of the schools on my list.

I hope it works out for you! I'm sure you'll still have a good chance. I think you can send your primary applications in June anyway with "mcat pending", and just have the mcat scores sent in right away when they're finished. I believe, IIRC, a couple people who did this in years past might have been (mistakenly?) sent auto-secondaries despite the schools still waiting on the MCAT.
I'm also applying to loyola 😛

Pretty sure it is September.

I have a question for Cougar and any other people who lurk this thread and have already been accepted.

What is your take on pre-interveiw LOI? Like sending a LOI immediately after you submit your AMCAS? I was thinking about this the other day and wanted to know peoples opinions. I know it would have less weight at Ivy league schools but maybe have some influence for state schools?

Now that the MCAT is over there is absolutely no reason why I should put off all this spring cleaning... *sigh*

i dont think this is a good idea. Show your interest in the school in your secondary application, its basically a pre-interview LOI/get to know you more form. some schools will have optional parts of their secondary specifically for you to tell them why you want to go there. So i would hold off any LOI until after you interview because then you can really say you want to go there and back it up much more since you would have interviewed.

best of luck.

what about schools that screen secondaries? this is especially true for my state school, which happens to be my top choice

maybe in this case it wont hurt to let them know.

anyone else care to share their thoughts?

I have a similar (but probably not similar) question:

What's preferred: Submitting June 1 (schools receiving on June whatever-ish) without spring grades and then just sending an update letter when my transcript is updated;
or ending the quarter and grades being submitted June 21st, and then the transcript being updated, and sent?

The difference (assuming a 4.0ish) would be 3.61 to 3.65? Significant? who knows :/

I also have a few IPs from the fall, which might be resolved in the spring, so maybe hold off?

yeah I would like to get more input on this, my state school screens for secondaries so if you get the supplemental secondary=automatic interview invite.(roughly 50 % IS get interviewed). So I feel like sending an interest letter might increase my chances of getting that interview, I hope?:luck:

3rd page? I think not.

Update: I have my interview with my pre-med advisor in a week or so. There's so much paperwork! Luckily, a lot of the information is stuff I need for the primary, so that's good, I guess?

WUbear: I read in the other thread that you already had your secondary essays done for 30 schools?!?! That's freaking stellar. Granted, you plan on leaving the country for some time, right? Still, that's pretty amazing. I'm rooting for you dude (and everyone else!) during this ridiculous process.

Nice, same thing happened to me when I met with my advisor last semester!

Anyone else sick of studying?? Thank god the weekends almost here

Hey yall,

I just wanted to drop in to see how everyone is doing. This process is starting to kick my butt, but I am seeing some progress. Oh and I just signed up for the June 16th MCAT date. Woot Woot!!!

Checklist update:

GPA----> Taking additonal classes to improve, so I will update in May:xf:.
MCAT--> Schedule set (Some sporadic studying here and there), but will go hard starting the 1st of March.
PS-----> Done, but writing an additional PS for variation.
School List----> Check🙂
LORS----> Recommenders started to upload to interfolio. Hooray!
Pre-secondaries---> I'm only applying to a few schools due to personal reasons, so majority of the secondaries are complete.

Prospective Class of 2016, let's do it!!!!:biglove:

Did anyone apply to any summer research programs? I am really excited to hear back from these in March! 🙂

Youneverknow22: does your state school have an early decision program? Because if they do, I think it would sound very insincere to send an LOI and not apply early decision.

WUbear, I don't know why you think 3/4 of acceptances are made by October, but please stop saying things that aren't true.

I realize it is common SDN knowledge that if you don't have >3.8 GPA, a 35+ on your mcat and apply by June 2nd, you should either go DO or Caribbean but I'm starting to wonder where some of these people on here get there statistics.

What in the world are you talking about?

How did this thread suddenly get so weird?🙂

How is it going '16!? Just checkin' in....hope the MCATting is going well🙂

You are either
1) Stating that there will be zero turnaround time between someone finishing their primary interview in October and being interviewed, or
2) In need of reading comprehension practice before for your verbal reasoning section 🙄

Most applicants fill out what's called a secondary application after their primary application is complete. Then, they have to wait 🙂eek🙂 until the admissions office gives them dates to interview. It's perfectly reasonable to state that an entering class may be half to 3/4 full by the time an applicant who was complete for primary app in october does the secondary, gets the interview invite, and completes the interview

What? EDP is not a good idea, from what I hear.

How was it?

Awesome, thanks for asking! I wish I could have stayed longer, but still a great experience!

Cougs you got an answer to my question concerning pre-interview LOI's, for a state school that screens for secondaries? thanks

WUbear: I read in the other thread that you already had your secondary essays done for 30 schools?!?! That's freaking stellar.

Haha, well done about half of them, thanks for the compliment 🙂
I had some free time in December, and I consider myself a bottom-of-the-pile applicant, so I made the effort to do a few of them since I'm going to be applying to about 33 schools it seems 😱

What everyone says about secondary writing proved to be true to me: one you write a few, the essay topics overlap and you can modify some of your answers for those of other schools, accelerating the process

nice, good luck! I definitely am no stellar applicant either so I'm going to be doing some secondary writing soon.

Yeah I'd say about halfway through....every essay became recycled material and was done within 20 mins🙂 And because I put so much effort into the initial material, it was all still quality stuff.

Of the 5 schools that I added "late", I got interviews at 4 of them.

Exactly my thinking. I think I got freaked out because some people were claiming that they applied to like 25 schools and wrote every single essay from scratch. Thought it was the norm. :scared:

Bah. Those are the same people who:
1 - Never EVER studied in any prereq they ever took, including advanced NASA astrophysics, and got an A++....a grade only reserved for one student every ten years.
2 - studied for the MCAT for 2 weeks and got a 49X
3 - Think other people are trying to steal their spot in med school because of ____ (fill in the blank)
4 - have cured cancer
5 - have shadowed a doc in every specialty ever and sometimes they let them do surgery
