Class of 2024

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
you worked full time in optometry for 1.5 years and SCO still wanted more shadowing?

It was a private practice, and also had experience at a referral clinic as well

That‘s really obnoxious, a lot of applicants don’t have full time private practice work experience at all. We’re you able to drop that spring class are you are still taking it ?

Date OptomCAS submitted: 09/26/2019 and 01/19/2020
Date verified: 10/27/2019
OAT Scores: 330 AA/ 310TS
Major: Biology
GPA: 3.5
Extracurricular Activities: work fulltime as an optometric assitant/optician for 1.5 years, coach kids soccer team, undergrad research intern
Schools applied: SCO, CCO, Nova, AZCOPT, ICO
Interviews extended/date: SCO (12/13/20) CCO (02/10/2020), Nova (02/14/2020), ICO (02/28/2020), AZCOPT (03/20/2020)
Interviews accepted: SCO, CCO, Nova, ICO, AZCOPT
Interviews declined:
Rejections/date: SCO 01/16/2020
Acceptance/date: CCO (02/11/2020), Nova (02/20/20)

I applied to just SCO originally since I grew up here in Memphis, and they asked me to get more shadowing experience and take a course this spring semester since I've been out of school for almost two years, which I did and they rejected me on 01/16/2020. At that point, I decided to apply to more and actually look into other schools which I hadn't before. I soon found out SCO wasn't as good to me as I thought it was.

Nova is by far my forerunner now after research and upon visiting campus the whole environment is amazing. I am checking out ICO this friday as it's my other top school pick, but cancelling my interview at AZCOPT. 99% sure I will be accepting Nova! I had no cons for them!
SAME FOR ME. SCO has always been my dream school but they wanted me to retake classes just bc I had been out of school for a few years. That turned me to apply for other school. And I was accepted within a few weeks where SCO wouldn’t even grant me an interview.

Congrats on the acceptances! How was your interview with Nova?

hi friends! i'm updating my post to let everyone know that I've been having some successful interviews, and that I've been extended a seat at a few programs. I have decided to accept SCCO's offer!

If anyone has any questions about any of the interviews that I've attended or anything, please feel free to reach out to me over dm! I'll be happy to answer any questions that I can! Good luck to all of you!
what was your science gpa?

Congrats on the acceptances! How was your interview with Nova?

Honestly it was probably my favorite interview day out of all of them! They were all so kind and happy. The interview is broken down into 3 parts. Your first part is a closed interview with a faculty member, me and the professor I interviewed with were laughing the whole time and just talking about anything including my doggo! The second part was an open file and they just ask questions about what type of student you are, and how do you deal with failure -things like that. The third part was just making sure you had all your prerequisites! I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was very laid back and very conversational.

SAME FOR ME. SCO has always been my dream school but they wanted me to retake classes just bc I had been out of school for a few years. That turned me to apply for other school. And I was accepted within a few weeks where SCO wouldn’t even grant me an interview.

They actually interviewed me and called and asked if I could come EARLY and I told them this would mean canceling shadowing and they said that was fine. Then turned around and asked me to get more after my interview and put my app on hold and to take a class. They told me upon reading my "essay" I wrote over the last shadowing experience they scheduled for me they would rereview my application. So, I did everything they asked and they still denied me. Honestly, they did me a favor. I'm so glad I branched out!

I was able to drop it. They didnt give me an answer until the last day to drop classes and I kept explaining to them that by the time they would give me an answer classes wouldve already started. They truly did not seem concerned about it.

30 year old VERY non traditional community college student with a dream here giving hope to all of those with low OAT scores and different majors!
Date OptomCAS submitted: 08/05/19
Date verified: 08/08/19
OAT Scores: 290AA 280TS (Taken on 11/16 which explains the gap between verification and invitation for interview)
Major: Public Management
GPA: 3.5 Science 3.7
Extracurricular Activities: Eagle Scout, 2 year church service mission in Nicaragua, 5 years experience dispensing hearing aids
Schools applied: SCCO, AZCOPT, Western
Interviews extended/date: AZCOPT 12/13, Western 1/7
Interviews accepted: ACOPT 12/13
Interviews declined: Western 1/7 (Was already accepted by AZCOPT before the interview with Western)
Rejections/date: SCCO (wanted me to retake OAT)
Acceptance/date: AZCOPT 12/16

I was completely ready to retake the OAT as I thought that I had no shot otherwise, but my application was interesting enough for two of the schools to give me an interview, and I got accepted to my first choice school! (Arizona native here). Keep at it, APPLY! Don't doubt yourself, I am living proof that schools look at more than just your OAT score and Major! I took many of my classes online through a community college as I am also working full time and have 3 kids! Work hard and put yourself out there, schools are looking for non traditional candidates too!

Congratulations on your acceptance! My situation is somewhat similar to yours. I'm 28 (will be 29 when I apply) and definitely non-traditional. My GPA is a bit lower than yours, due to poor grades during my first run at college when I was 17. Since returning to school 2 years ago, I have done exceptionally well in my classes, minus a C in Physics I. Like you, I also have children (ages 2 and 3!) and work full time as an ophthalmic technician. Can I ask at which CC you took your prerequisites? I still have a couple to take. I'm taking my OAT and applying to Midwestern this summer. I know it's not ideal, but I pretty much am putting all of my eggs in that basket. With the kiddos so young, and my in-laws living here, it just makes sense. I've been in touch with their admissions department and just applied to the summer Pre-Optometry program they offer. I've got my fingers crossed that they'll want another non-traditional native in the next cycle! Congratulations again!

hi! I was wondering if you ever heard back from UIWRSO or UHCO?

Hi everyone, I have an interview coming up with WesternU for optometry very soon. Any tips? Or if anyone knows what type of questions they ask, please let me know! :) I know they do behavioral type questions which I'm nervous about.

Thank you! Should I mainly focus and practice based off the interview questions on SDN for WesternU? Do you remember any specific questions from your WUCO interview?

Has anybody received any updates from SCCO lately?
I received an acceptance from SCCO this past week. Prior to this, they mentioned that decisions would come out no later than May 1 due to delays caused by COVID-19.

Thank you so much! :) No, I actually interviewed about three weeks ago and I received a call from the Admissions Office yesterday regarding the acceptance.

Date OptomCAS submitted: 03/14/2020
Date verified: 3/16/2020 (OptomCAS messed up my GPA believe it or not. I used their GPA calculator excel sheet and did my own calculations by hand to triple check. So if you think it may be wrong I highly suggest you check just in case. It can really mess up your chances. So it got reverified by 3/23/2020 and that was after I contacted OptomCAS every morning and lunch for like four days and sent very detailed emails for them to get it corrected and verified.)

  • Miscellaneous--Postmates delivery, U.S Army Reserves, Swords martial arts 2rd degree black belt, Lead instructor for about 3 years), 1 year of tutoring, mission trip to New Orleans with Habitat for Humanity, Food Bank volunteer for 4 years. Theatre nerd (I’m a Thespian!)

Just wanted to say there is hope out there for those who don't think their scores/GPAs or just overall academic history is good enough. I used to be a previous optometry student at a different school; I had to withdraw after my first year for personal/family reasons. In all honesty, I didn't do well when I was in optometry school at the time because things were going on at home that took a toll on my concentration. I knew it wasn't going to do me any good for the long run so I left and thought I'd never be able to return to school with that kind of history on my record. It took me awhile, but I'm back on track! :) So anyone out there dealing with life just not going the way you planned, it's okay, don't give up!

Sounds like you've got it pretty much figured out and have a lot of experience in the field that should help you with your interview. I took a lot of my prerequisites online through Phoenix College, it is under the Maricopa Community College umbrella. They were the only ones I could find that offered an online BioChem class that Opt schools would accept. Good luck to you, hopefully I will see you up there!

Will be attending AZCOPT this fall!

I was scheduled to take the OAT in March but it ended up getting cancelled due to COVID-19. I was scoring in the mid 300's so I was super bummed that my test ended up getting cancelled. Luckily the schools I applied to (minus SCCO) accepted the GRE in addition to the OAT so I submitted those scores instead. I decided to take the GRE a few years ago in case I wanted to pursue my MPH degree first lol. I was worried submitting my GRE scores would hurt my application as I was going against other applicants who most likely have taken the OAT. To my surprise, I ended up getting interview offers and got accepted to both UIW and AZCOPT. Both schools were really impressed with my experience (especially working at a start-up lol) and my dedication to improve my GPA. I showed major improvement in my GPA in my final two years of undergrad and also retook a few pre-requisites at a local community college. Keep staying positive if your science GPA's are low! Just make sure to show improvement and get some diverse experience :)

Hi all, I've recently just taken the GRE with an unofficial verbal score of 159 and 151 in Quant. I've applied to SALUS, NECO, MCPHS, and IAPUR with an interview already completed at SALUS. However, I am worried that my GRE scores, in particular, the quant score is not high enough to offset my low GPA (2.93). I am wondering if anyone can provide further insight as to what scores those schools are looking for? My top choices are NECO and SALUS due to their higher first-time pass rates. I am also curious as to other people's thoughts about how quickly you think student loans will be paid off once you start practicing? It's been the thought I have most struggled with especially since I intend to practice in Canada where my total student loan could be up to CAD 400,000 following completion of the program. Thank you in advance for your responses :).

Hi! I was in a similar situation in terms of a lower gpa, and I got into a 4 schools including Salus, MCPHS and IAUPR. I think it is doable, but the key is applying early. Since you already had an interview at Salus, when did you first apply?
Also, I’m a Canadian student as well and yes the loans will add up, but if you work hard and pay them off as much as possible after graduating it is possible to earn them back. Many of the doctors I work with managed to do that in a few years, so it’s totally worth it. If you have any further questions feel free to dm me!

Awesome! It is encouraging to hear from someone who's been in a similar position. Unfortunately I applied what I assume is considered late in the cycle (February). My interview with SALUS was in early March with my application on hold since then while they awaited the test scores. If you don't mind me asking, which school did you end up choosing and why did you choose it over the rest that you got accepted to?

I ended up choosing Salus, despite having to give up a scholarship at another school because I felt that Salus has the most experience, boards success, and a well established program overall. They also have a great variety of externships and lots of hands on experience, which is what I was looking for in a program. Hopefully it’s the right choice lol.

Hey! I got accepted to Salus after applying in January and taking the GRE in March, I had a 150 quant and 155 verbal (5.5 analytical writing as well). Your scores are great and I definitely think youd be accepted. I know they are still taking applications although I was originally on standby until a seat opened up, so applying in June might be wise because we also heard at the interview day presentation that early applicants are more likely to receive scholarships :)

thats absolutely amazing!! goodluck in your journey in Salus, thats one of my top two schools. You definitely helped shed some light for me!!! thank you so much for sharing your experience on here. I am still registered to take the OAT in Aug. but if I dont do as well I hope, then hopefully they can look at my GRE scores to make up for it.

Y’all, I was so down on myself and I never thought I could actually get accepted into a school, but I’m going to be attending my number 1 choice! Believe in yourself and your abilities, never give up on what you want to do! UHCO class of 2024! ✨
