A few weeks ago I obtained a slice of cattle experience, but I'm not sure how to classify it.

Basically- I heard a neighbor was getting his cattle preg tested, so I popped over that morning and he took me on a ride mustering the cattle, and gave me the low down on herefords, and I learned the basics of the cattle industry.

Once all the cattle were ready, the vet showed up and I hung around and watched them put the cattle through the chute and he palpated them. After a few cattle went by, I asked him if I could have a go, and he was happy to have me palpate (eee!!! Was the happiest moment of life! lol... since I'd seen student vets do it on TV as a kid, I just couldn't wait till I could do it!!) a few, and even saved the last one for me to do 'first'! 😀

Anyhoo, since there was a vet involved, I feel like I should put this under a 'shadowing vet' experience- but it was also more of a spontaneous thing and was more or less planned with the cattle-owner then with the vet....though of course once the vet got there, I was more involved with him than the cattle owner.

That being said, the reason why I'm sort of confused is because I only spent like 2 hours with the vet- so doesn't it sound kind of silly to say I only spent 2 hours shadowing? BUT- thus far its my only cattle experience so I'm very attached to it!! <3

Otherwise-should I put this under both animal AND vet? But emphasize more on the cattle industry with the animal exp, and mention palpating (eeee!!!) on the vet side?

note:
*I'm applying to Dublin and so anyone with Atlantic Bridge experience you know what the application sheets look like- so should I fill both out?

*Any VMCAS info is helpful too.

Sounds to me like a great opportunity to get more experience with this particular vet. 😉 I initially had very little cattle experience and I was very fortunate to find a veterinarian much like the one you described. I went from feeling mush to saying "I feel a follicle on the right ovary." You should try to see if you can ride along with this vet a few more times, now that he knows you and has had a favorable experience with you.

That being said, every hour counts. Who cares if it seems silly? I'd classify the whole experience under animal experience, and then add the two hours under the veterinarian as vet experience.

Thanks Bacci!! Yeah the funny thing is I had gone around to all the surrounding vets and dropped of a CV, but its dying down into the slow season here. So he was one of the vets I visited, and then when I was at the farm and he showed up he was like "Oh, you dropped off a resume didn't you?".

I would definitely call/email/drop in with this vet, mention that you saw him at your neighbors, say that you really enjoyed the experience, and ask if you can ride along with him over the summer. You only had a few hours, but now you have an in to get more experience with this vet! Persistence is key

+1

2 hours isn't anything important to write on your app, but if you can ride along for a few days that will give you a much better idea of the profession.

Yeah, squeeze a few more hours out of him. Try to get at least 10, but hey, if you like it and it's okay, get as many hours as you can! Isn't it great when something spontaneous pans out to be something really cool, or a great opportunity?
