MD co ‘20 Residency Panic Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You guys I feel like the programs that actually wait for the mspe will be sending interviews in the last 2 weeks of October. Some have sent out emails saying expect to be contacted oct 15-30.
I’ve gotten a decent amount before the release and 0 since. The programs that I’m waiting on are higher up on the list and I think they’ll be more selective with their invites and are actually taking the time to review stuff.

Anyways good luck to everyone the next few weeks. Stay strong lol. Keep the stress eating to a minimum .. we need to look good in them suits y’all.

Agreed, think this is really good advice and important to keep in mind.

So when is the proper time to hit the panic button on prelim/TY's and add some more programs (and when is too late?). End of the month?

I am only sitting at 3 right now and am kinda worried about matching my advanced with nowhere to go for intern year.

1 since MSPE for me. From a program that didnt send any prior to MSPE anyway. Applying Peds. Per spreadsheet, looks like 85%+ programs already sent some invites.
Thanks for this update. No way I’m looking at the spreadsheet myself lol

so to be 100% sure. are these the only things that need to be submitted or am I missing anything?

Yes, nothing else is needed. However, for USMLE transcript, it is a 2-step process: you need to authorize release, and then assign to the programs (and pay for it). A few folks missed the assign step. Did you have any interviews? If you do, you are fine.

Family med applicant here. 1 inv pre MSPE. Just got a second one today near midnight. 🙂.I hope we all get more invites this week. Good luck.
Are you USMD, DO or IMG? It would be strange to have only one invite pre-MPSE for an US grad applying to FM

Dont be a dick. They were being positive. This is stressful for everyone.
Oh sorry that you took it that way, I didn’t mean to offend anyone. Was genuinely curious if there was any specific circumstances for the poster situation since it would be the first one that I came across if he was a US grad

So, how bad is it that I'll be rotating as a visiting student at a program, interviewing while I'm there but also interviewing at 3 other places during that month, one of the days being the day after my rotation starts?

Edit: This isn't an audition, but it is in the peds department.

So I’m confused? Are you interested in going there or not?

Super interested in that program. I’m just worried that if I’m away for 3 interviews while I’m rotating there (even though it’s on a speciality service, not an audition) it’ll look bad. I’ll be interviewing for that program while I’m there as well.

So I assume you’re applying for Peds and are doing a Peds specialty at this place? How much do you care about the interviews you have at that time, how many do you have currently?

I think this isn’t a great set up

I have similar concerns. I have three interviews during a technical “audition” rotation.. but, i have nowhere else to put them. Im just hoping they’ll be understanding

I'm realizing sitting at my 4 interviews with 3 of them being regional that I wasted a lot of money throwing out broad applications. :bag:
Time for letters of interest then! Find a cousin or something in an area and say you have family ties.

Not sure what you’re applying to, but based on what I’ve seen for IM east/west coat does later than midwest

I hate to feel like I'm begging. I'm terrible at this lol.

Go check out the Ask the Program Coordinator thread on the residency forum and you'll see current PD's and PC's state that it is still a bit too early to communicate as they are still trying to get through all the applications that may have just recently been "completed for viewing" last Wednesday with the MSPE.

I know it's really difficult to wait...I feel it lol.

I'm psych. 78% of programs have sent out invites. Yayyyyy......

Fair. I wanna wait. The only one I'm feeling impatient on is one where I have a sub-I at next month that hasn't sent me anything. I waited 3 months to get that sub-I and it's 30 minutes away from home. They've sent out a couple rounds of invites per the spreadsheet. Interview me plssssssss

This might be my top program I've been invited to. I'm at 9.

Well then yeah, if you go on three interviews (3 days off and potentially 3 days you’ll have to leave early) plus interviewing there is 7 days out of the 20-25 you’ll be on service. I would keep 1 of the 3 and drop the other 2 IMO.

Yeah, looking at some of the spreadsheets, it’s only the 250s/260s AOA with no ties getting those out of region invites. While there’s a lot of people with lower stats but regional getting invites. Also a LoI at this point is just going to get a “we’re reviewing apps at this time” message.

Wait for the top people to start canceling so that more spots start opening up.

Granted it’s not an audition with the program, it’s a specialty rotation with inpatient and outpatient components in pediatrics at the same school so idk if it’ll even come to the program’s attention that I’ll be gone.

I sent an LOI Friday. The PD replied saying they were impressed by my app but they sent out their invites for the season. I am now waitlisted. I regret waiting. I’m also a psych applicant
The PD was just being polite. If they wanted to interview you they would make it happen even if they've sent out their invites. People drop and cancel all the time and they can always overbook an extra person. Don't feel regrets about waiting.

I told you what to do. People talk more than you realize.

No point in even thinking about it man, what are you gonna do, cancel those interviews? This whole entire situation is a **** show. You're told to audition to get interviews. Then on said auditions you'll invariable have to go to interviews. There is no winning.

I'm an average MD applicant, applied IM, quite broadly to 32 programs. I've been checking the spreadsheet and just got some invites from programs that had passed me up. They are coming in waves, and it's early! I am at 11 right now. 🙂

When should we start sending out LOIs? The programs Im interested in already sent out a lot of interviews already from the spreadsheet 10+.

Where do you think you'll end up capping IVs? (IM applicant just to provide some info)

I am quickly realizing that I largely applied to safeties and some of which I'm not that interested in have given me IVs. I'm still waiting on many programs I'm much more interested in but I dont want to cancel the previous ones without knowing I'll still be keeping enough to match...

I assume you’re a strong applicant. Imo 9 should be fine plus or minus 2 or 3 safeties. For me I’ll probably cap at 12 rads interviews and 6 TY/Prelims.

In all fairness, it’s getting fairly late for audition rotations. I agree that it probably would look negatively on an applicant to miss so many days of a rotation, especially if they’re an away student. If the rotation is even remotely related to the specialty in question (ex. peds pulm for peds), I’d try to move those interviews to another time.

We don’t always get a choice when to audition. A program I really want, I applied for a June date. They offered me November. Sometimes it’s the choice between not doing an away at all or having to sacrifice some days. I’d hope getting to know a person for majority of a month would still count for something versus an applicant they don’t know at all

Aways aren’t necessarily always positive- they can hurt you as well if you aren’t stellar. It’s why I would maximize my time on the rotation if you’re going to do it at all. Put your best foot forward if this is a program you’re really interested in.

Folks, I just noticed that I applied to multiple specialties at the same institutions. Do I delete one of the specialties, or do I keep them and only delete interviews once they come in if they come in from the same institution?
Thank you

When you say multiple it makes me wanna ask how many specialities did you apply to?

Guys I’m panicking a bit today. The spreadsheet has been toxic for my health this week.
I keep telling myself it’s their loss lol. But starting to wonder if the deans letter has hurt vs helped me.

Wait, where do you stand and in what field? I thought you were a competitive applicant iirc (at least that's what I recall back when we interviewed at TJ 3 years ago lol)

I thought the same and then I finally got one today. My impression based on spreadsheet and what I have seen a PD say on one of the psych forums is that MSPE adds more volume of info to parse through per each candidate. People sending LOIs have been getting back e-mails that schools have barely started to review, they have hundreds of apps, etc. So hopefully it isn't hurting us, just making the process longer for all of us.
