MD & DO Co’22 ERAS Panic Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Also, is the work preferences section available for programs to see, or is this literally just the AAMC collecting research data? It says it's optional to complete and "research only". It's the stuff that comes after the submit page.

I took that to mean that it was just for research! I think I read that in the big guide PDF also

When a program's website only says "3 letters of recommendation", do we interpret that as 3 max or 3 minimum?
Torn on this. None I'm applying to say 4. In addition, a few say "yo you can use a chair letter but it is not required" but my chair letter is going to be so generic and weak, compared to my 3 presumably strong letters I also have.

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I just want some reassurance. I am currently on a Sub-I and planning on submitting my ERAS on September 24th. Is there any risk of submitting it so late? I read on this website to submit ERAS by the 21st. That website is for IMGs and I am a DO student so I am not sure if that applies to me.

The 24th is fine for the general eras app. We had an extensive discussion about this a few pages ago. However, the supplemental app should be submitted by the 19th bc it won’t get released until October 6th if you submit after that

9/24 is fine. You don't need to submit by 9/21. Just don't submit 9/27 or 9/28 if you can avoid it. The report from previous years is that the site crashes a lot with the uptick in traffic, so best to avoid the last couple of days before the deadline. But I don't think 9/24 will be an issue.

ETA: are you applying derm, gen surg, or IM? If you're doing the supplemental app thing, that's a different story. I'll defer to somebody applying in those specialties if that's the case. But for everybody else, doesn't matter when you submit as long as not last couple of days.

Anybody have ring light/headphone/webcam recommendations? Also will the mic on the headphones be sufficient or should we get an external mic?
That is one topic wherein I'm throwing all common sense to the wind and having fun with it.

Slaving a cinema camera to my computer, using a 3 light LED setup, using a lav mic obscured with gaff tape and all the whole works. 🤣 I will either have technical difficulties and revert to using my laptop's webcam, or I will become the Quintin Tarantino of zoom interviews.

Question about supplemental application-so under where it says if you want to share more information about preferences to a specific region. Only programs in that region will see my response to that region correct? So like a school in Florida will not see my explanation for New England?

correct from my understanding

Yes. ERAS considered including this but they felt it wasn't ready yet, so they wanted to test it out. I'm not really certain how collecting the data actually tests anything -- although I guess they could give it to us after the season is over and ask how it would have affected our choices? Still, hard to know how that would be interpreted. At a minimum they can look to see the spread in selections.

Question about ERAS publications section.

Sometimes poster presentations from conferences are subsequently published in some sort of conference journal as an abstract. For me, these have the same title and same authors. Should I input both into ERAS? It feels redundant/bloaty but maybe inclusion in the journal is meaningful and I'm not aware.

When is everyone planning on submitting? Feels like I'm signing my life away

My goal is to be ready to submit the 21/22 and then submit the 24th. totally planning on my school to screw me over by not uploading Dean's letters and transcripts on time

EDIT: @fldoctorgirl apparently KCU isn’t uploading our transcript or MSPE until the 29th, clown world

Stupid question, is presenting a research paper I wrote on a public policy topic at my schools journal club count as a presentation on ERAS?

My plan is to submit on Wednesday the 22nd since a week will hopefully be plenty of time for any glitches to be sorted out. My school says our transcripts and MSPE will be uploaded before the 29th but who knows if that'll actually happen. Over the past 3 years, I've learned to expect the worst and hope to be pleasantly surprised.

does 9/27 srsly start crashing? isn't the app due 9/29? has this been verified that it really does crash 1-2 days in advance? do you mean just slow in general, or actually crashing and unable to access the eras portal?

All the above, kinda like how VSAS was crashing when apps when out. They just can’t take 20k people applying at once

What's the difference between the ERAS supplemental activities vs. ERAS experiences section? I wrote all my ERAS experiences in narrative form, should I just copy and paste??

how much are people spending. Thought I would be in the 1200+ range but looks like everything will be in the 700s which is nice. Webcam, ring light, and microphone will probably be 200 ish.

So i heard from a lot of residents that the ring light and mic and all that they felt were a waste of money they ended up not using them and everything was fine
I mean as long your interviewer(s) can see and hear you, there should be no problem. Everything else is just extra IMO lol.

This is what I've heard too. And also that they sometimes prefer just natural light/background

In general I would list it just once, as a poster. You submitted it for peer review once.

In general, no. If it was a required part of your school, then definitely not. If it hasn't been peer reviewed, it's not going to carry much weight, anyway.

There are less spots on the supplemental -- so you get to pick "up to 5" to focus on. You could list less than 5.
But honestly VSAS was only down for like minutes at a time right? Like you could probably still submit the 28 and be ok is my guess
Sure, you probably could. But why? Is your app really going to be any better a week later?

@NotAProgDirector Sorry if this was discussed ad nauseam but what happens if one of my research manuscripts is accepted in October and I want to update programs? I assume that once eras is submitted you cant update publications section. How do I let programs know of acceptances from journals and publications after September 29th

How much of a difference will it make if I submit my Supplemental today vs 29th deadline? Is that 6-7 days delay make that much of a difference in the grand scheme of things?

I believe The supplemental app needs to be submitted by Sept 19th if you want programs to be able to see it on October 1 otherwise if you submit it later programs won’t be able to see it until mid October So it makes a big difference if you submit today

Not mid October, but October 6 which is only a 6-7 day discrepancy.
