so have you guys seen the commericals for a new airborne-like product called Cold MD? it's something to take when you first get a cold, so you don't need to take medications, its immune inhancing, you could say.

well my mom thought it was funny they were calling it Cold MD, that it sounded more like a Cold DO product! so i see a paper ad for it in US Weekly, and what do you know, in the "MD's behind Cold MD", one of them IS a DO!!!! it should say the PHYSICIANS behind the product! UGH. bad enough they are calling it Cold MD, when a DO is behind it...

anyway, i'm going to contact them. anyone else who wants to:

Sounds like a lot of hassle about a product that isn't evaluated by the FDA.

Now HEAD-ON APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE FOREHEAD!

I can only hope a DO is behind that... that'll bring some recognition/respect.

while I agree that it would be nice for some recognition.... even as a DO student I'll admit that calling a product cold DO, and not cold MD, wouldn't hold as much marketing clout w/ the general/lay public.... I really don't think it warrants contacting them....

I hear you, people think that MD is the abbreviation for doctor. I even have trouble convincing the pharmacists I work with, even though many of them admit that if they decided to go to med school, their preference would be DO school.

However, it's an herbal substance consisting mostly of vitamin C and Zinc. While important in a healthy diet, these are not ground breakingly advanced technology. Hardly worth the claims it makes of boosting the immune system by 312% and helping you recover 94% faster. It's a vitamin. Let the MD's have this snake oil. We really don't need quackery associated with Osteopathic Medicine.

Q. Cold MD increases immune system resistance by 312 percent. As a doctor, how significant do you find that to be, and why?

A. I find that to be very significant! The results speak for themselves: 312 percent is very impressive!

AGREED!!!!!!! In my opinion this vitamin (Zinc is actually a mineral) complex is on the same playing field as the mulitvitamins you get at GNC. It doesn't take an MD, DO, or a PhD to know that Zinc has proven benefits of specific and non-specific immune function. DO's are already viewed by some in the medical community to be quacks, let the MD's have this one.

I don't know, but I know where to put it, and that's the important part.

Ok ... I googled it

A new headache treatment applied directly to the forehead!
Face your pain Head On™

Safe to use with other medications
Invisible & Non-Greasy
No unwanted side effects
Can be used as often as needed
Homeopathic
Up to 100 applications

Now you know not only where to put it, buy why you're putting it there.

I wouldnt want it called MD or DO, it sounds like load of cr*p.
What's wrong with you people? You act like you've never heard of any treatment/prevention for common "sicknesses." Boosting your immune system isnt cr@p or quackery. Ever heard of echinacea or goldenseal? Promoting a healthy system with preventative (or early) measures is the DO way (in my book anyway)!

"Studies indicate that echinacea does not appear to prevent colds or other infections."

Preventative medicine is definately the DO way, but you're supposed to take this stuff as soon as you start getting a cold. Thats like taking birth control as soon as you find out you're pregnant....its just not gonna work!

Oh yea and echinacea sounds like a skin rash and goldenseal would be the king of all seals..am i close???

The claims made by this product are outrageous and unsupported. Although they may boost your immune system some, they are definitely not the miracle that this product claims.

There is no evidence despite many studies that vitamin C will do this even at 830% of the RDA. Is it good for you? Definitely. In this quantity? Probably not useful, but not really harmful. Can it speed up recovery by 94%? No.The only reason anyone believes this is because Linus Pauling, the Albert Einstein of chemistry, thought so. Well, even super geniuses can be wrong.

“I've reviewed all of the research. In my opinion, Cold MD contains clinically proven ingredients for a drug-free way to support a strong immune system and allow you to recover faster.”
Dr. Marvin Heuer, MD, FAAFP, MD Scientific Advisory Board Member, Iomedix Chief Scientific Officer

A clinical study on the key ingredient combination in Cold MD™ showed subjects reduced the frequency of episodes by an average of 3.3 vs. 0.8 against the placebo (312 percent greater resistance). In the same study, subjects reduced the duration of episodes by an average of 3.3 days vs. 1.7 days against the placebo (94 percent faster recovery). Carefully read the entire label before use. Cold MD™ is patent-pending. † Formulated by Dr. Marvin Heuer, MD, FAAFP, Chief Scientific Officer, Iomedix. All individuals have been remunerated. Carefully read the entire label before use.

So the guy that made it thinks it's great...

and a decrease of 3.3 v 0.8 in frequency "episodes" is their 312%...

what exactly is an episode?

Holy crap!!!!! This is the guy at the University of Floriday who is the medical expert behind all the muscletech supplements. He is full of it!!!!!!! While this supplement company (muscletech) has come out with a few supplements that have some physiological relevance it is for the most part robbery. My suspicions are now confirmed.

This man's next claim is as follows:
The following results were observed in 60 previously sedentary indviduals.
In only 1.289 workout sessions, Cold MD was shown to increase their one rep max bench press by 9,235,862%.

All individuals have been remunerated. Carefully read the entire label before use. [/I]

Is this something they normally put on package inserts? Am I correct in my thought that this is pretty much saying that they've paid all of the patients to say it worked?

BTW this product is pretty much the exact same thing as AIRBORNE. Though AIRBORNE makes the great claim about it being created by a second grade teacher - and I would really trust my second grade teacher to make medication for me!

Gotta love it when they cover their ass by using a word the vast majority of the public doesn't know and probably wouldn't take the time to look up. They could've simply used the word "pay/paid". I'm sure it's just a coincidence 🙄

This is really hilarious considering that colds are viral. I didn't know you could buy systemic anti-virals OTC?? What a great bunch of BS. Let the MD's have it.

as an aspiring DO, I certainly do NOT want to be associated with a profession that promotes "Cold MD"....we already have enough problems as it with that jack ass that graduated from AZCOM promoting Xenedrine or whatever that weight loss magic pill is.... 👎

I will say this once and be done with it: you are making a bad name for DOs by doing this. It is bad enough that some of us have the little kid on the playground syndrom; thinking we always have to pump ourselves up to look good in front of everyone else. The fact is that the public has seen the words MD for a lot longer than DO and people will, most likely, always link physician to MD more than DO. Who cares if a stupid product has MD and not DO? Does it personally impact you? Do you think that more people would buy it if it said, COLD MD/DO? What if it said COLD OD? Who cares? Just stop, please.

hah...pretty harsh!...I wouldn't care less if it was MD or DO either, however your post is just begging for some kind of response. So why do you care if someone cares if a product has MD or DO. This doesn't impact you personally either so be a little more open to someones suggestions. Even if you think its a stupid question its still someones right to ask it. If I had to make a choice between a doctor who asks stupid questions and one who gives dingus responses to questions ill pick the first one anyday. I promise you that people won't judge you for being a DO or MD...they'll judge YOU for a whole other set of reasons.

So this is completely off the topic but how in gods name have you done all those extracurriculars and received three majors by the age of 22...I'm 23 and im not sure i've had the hours in my life to accomplish all that...but since you were also mean in your post ill say this...you deserve all congratulations for your gpa and EC's but i still kicked your ass on the mcats!..j/j!

Aren't all side effects unwanted?
Remember that originally erections were a side effect of Viagra; it was originally designed to treat hypertension, but they learned it was ineffective for that but that it made old men harder than Chinese algebra

No, I guess it wouldn't impact me and the profession I am about to enter if some douche bag sends a letter off saying how angry he/she is that DO didn't appear in some two-bit product that works about as much as me sticking my finger up my ass. This was the same debate started over the "Hero MD" article. Who the hell cares if he is a DO or an MD? He was a great human being who went out, risked his life and kicked ass doing it. While I agree we need to get our name/mission out to the greater public, bitching over useless products is not the effective method to accomplish this. There are only 60,000 of us, so a few bad apples, in our case, will have an impact. The MDs, on the other hand, let them have all the quacks, they have the numbers to back it up 😀 . Go out and make your impact the positive way; find a cure to some disease, become a well known and respected surgeon, or, what I plan to do, just become a great physician and word of you and your training will spread.

As for the ECs and GPA, its called time managment and never sleeping helps as well. My MCAT, eh, so maybe I should have studied for that.

What about Jon Marshal (I think his name is) Western Grad who supports the work out wonder.

geesh people. i was just trying to put it out there, and it is certainly not a harmful product, like some of the diet drugs. its just an herb/mineral mix. while i certainly agree its not going to cure a cold, it doesnt claim to, and it isnt "quack"y.

its out there to make money, just like every other product there is a commercial for.

i thought it was more funny that a product that is more with the DO philosophy, was being called MD.

take a chill guys, and if you dont like it, go on to another post. sorry if i bothered anyone by making them read this thread!!

This product reflects the DO philisophy??? If you actually believe this please pull all of your DO applications at this time. That is just what osteopathic medicine needs to get into...questionable products marketed to cure colds, which last time I checked don't have any type of cure.

quite frankly...this has NOTHING to do w/ the osteopathic philosophy....maybe homeopathic or naturopathic....but promoting this type of product is a far cry from promoting overall health, wellness and preventative medicine....

I believe he was a Midwestern grad or something like that....either way, I think he should be burned at the stake at the next AOA convention. They seem to react the same way to dissent as the Catholic Church did during the time of Galileo, so perhaps they would like to begin utilizing the retribution methods of that other hallowed organization. :meanie:

Which is why I think they should do some research into what it actually does before saying it cures X and Y illnesses...but then agian I have never step foot in a med school classroom so refer to Taus for that one.

Did no one read my other post???

I can't believe that no one is catching on to the fact that this ColdMD project claims to treat a VIRAL pathology. Last time I checked the main thing we do for minor viral pathologies is NOTHING (other than advise fluids & rest). What a joke...see what happens when people wave a check in front of some physician's noses.

Until your patient insists on having an antibiotic no matter how much you explain to them that it wont help a viral infection. In that magic time of Harry Potter land, anything can cure a viral infection.

That's when you give them something like Decadron which has been proven to shorten the length of time it takes to recover from viral pharyngitis, etc....most patients won't know the difference and it won't hurt them even if it doesn't do anything for them.

Just because they demand a medication doesn't mean you have to prescribe it. Read the ER prescribing tips thread in the Emergency Med part of SDN....you'll see.

Sure, you dont have to give them anything. That is when they "shop" for someone who will. No, I don't want to read any tips on SDN, I think I'd rather learn from an actual, living, breathing physician standing in front of me.

Wow...........this is what is wrong with many primary care physicians today. Are you trying to say that you will presribe an anti-bacterial medication for a viral infection? Have you ever heard of antibiotic resistance? I have spent a great deal of time with a "living, breathing, physician", and he feels very strongly that if this sort of attitude continues, we may not have any effective antibiotics left in 20 years. I think we need to educate people on the importance of only using medications when they are absolutey necessary. If they make the decision to find another physician, at least we can rest our heads on our pillows at night knowing we did something to address this very serious issue.
