COMLEX level II and comparing schools

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to compare two schools (specifically touro Middletown and WVSOM) and am wondering how important COMLEX II first time pass rates are. Touro Harlems scores are pretty significantly worse than WVSOM (75-80% vs 85-90%). Also, Middletown has not posted any of their COMLEX II data yet because their first class is taking it this year (I'm pretty sure, correct me if I'm wrong).

Basically my question is this: how much is a schools comlex II pass rate a reflection on the quality of their clinical education? Also, how concerned should I be that Middletown is a new school and their clinical rotations are not as well established as WVSOM

WVSOM, while it may be super rural, it a very well respected school. I'm sure you've seen all of the Touro NY drama infesting these forums recently, and even if most is not true, I personally still wouldn't risk attending such a questionable school, regardless of other factors.

However, to answer your question, it could indicate that touro students have poorer clinical training, or it could just be the product of some type of sampling bias. Who knows how many years those numbers reflect, or any other factors involved, or even the truth of those numbers. As far as I'm aware, we've really only seen those numbers thrown around by people claiming to be current students, so I would take it with a grain of salt.

Congrats on getting in. There was literally just a thread about Touro middletown started a few days ago by a disillusioned student there airing his gripes about the program. A lot of interesting info on there that I'm not informed enough to really comment on. Check it out! It's in the DO thread.

For what its worth, I would say and I imagine everyone else who replies to this thread will say that WVSOM is a far superior and entrenched school than Touro middletown at this point. If I were you, I would take the WVSOM acceptance and run with it.

I read that thread and it's what spawned this one. I felt like a couple people really hijacked that thread and I'd like a little bit more of a level headed discussion about what COMLEX pass rates mean

Oh I thought there was another one. I've read that before. Although some of it is true, take what doczebra says wth a grain of salt. He claimed he was an M1 then was on rotations all within the span of a couple of months.

I'm not saying all the accusations in that thread were accurate! Just wanted to point it out cause a lot of the adcoms who know much more about these programs also weighed in, so it seemed like a good resource for you guys rather than waiting for one of them to find this thread also.

I feel you in terms of desiring an urban medical school vs one in a rural area. WVSOM is such a good school though that I think personally I would overlook its location.. if you do well there you can do anything professionally.

I was talking to a current student at Touro, and they said partly the reason why they think level 2 pass rates are lower is because they don't factor in shelf grades at all into your m3 and m4 grades- which gives many students no incentive to study for them- hence they perform worse on level 2.

Step 1/level 1 scores are probably the most important thing on your application. However, many programs require a level 2 score by the end of the residency interview season or they won't rank you.
