I got into dental school at VCU and live about 20 min away (in Chesterfield..for those that are familiar with the area). With a 8am-5pm schedule of classes, and of course a ton of studying afterwards....do u think it's worth the commute in order to save the money for rent (~$600/mo)???

You call 20 minutes a commute? I call that close.

I'd "commute"

LOL, I can't believe you call 20 minutes a "commute". I commute to my PART time job three times a week and it takes me about a hour and a half each way. Include those hours I commute and you can call it a full time job. I drive part of the way and the other part I take the train because of so much traffic going to downtown Sacramento. Sacramento isn't even highly populated and I still have to take public transportation to avoid the stresses of the freeway. I wish it only took me 20 minutes. I also wish I could DRIVE in those 20 minutes and not have to take public transportation too. I'd give just about anything for that.

Stay at home and DRIVE those 20 minutes you call a "commute".

Oh, and to add...When there is no traffic it takes about 20 minutes to get there driving.

I have a 20 min commute to school right now. I go to WVU and Morgantown is growing and getting more crowded every year. I drive 20 mins and I am on 15 acres of sweet bliss. I love the peace and quiet where I live. I would not trade that for the world. Plus the drive is my time, just me, not a mommy or a wife, but me. 🙂 Take the commute.

Wow, I wish I was in the 20 minute range. If I don't sell my house, I'm looking at a minimum of 40 minutes each way...maybe longer depending upon acceptances. As much as I would love to stay where I'm at, I fear the drive may be a bit much.

I do not think that the OP if joking at all.

Depending on who you are where you are from, the idea of commuting can mean anything from a 10 minute car ride to a two hour jaunt with 2 buses and three trains.

I commute an hour to work each way and don't even feel it. My wife commutes 20 minutes (after having worked literally 3 minutes away) and feels like she is in the car forever and a day.

Save your rent money and take the drive, it is smart choice!

My house is 35-40 minutes away from Stony Brook and I'm really considering commuting there. Only thing is, Long Island traffic is horrific. Horric x 10 if any snow of any sort is falling.

hey.... where in chesterfield do you live?
i live in West End of Richmond, would like to meet a few dental students. I am thinking about going to VCU's school of dentistry for a tour in a few days. Just to take a look maybe talk to a few teachers/students, see what they think about the school 😛

I COMPLETELY understand the OP.... I'm from Rhode Island, so a 20 minute commute will get me 1/2 way across the state

I will be commuting about 30-35 minutes next year to school. I found that I did much better in class when I commuted.

There is something about being "stranded" on campus that makes me work harder. When I lived across the street from campus, I found myself going home between classes and I got lazy.

I hear that, lopyswine!!

I feel OP on the 20 min commute, though. I go 30 min. to work, and while it is a nice time to just listen to the radio and relax (rural highway), I'd rather live a little closer and make that 30 min car ride a 30 min bike ride. It'd be far enough to avoid the "go home and take a nap" thing (not that I could do that with a family), but close enough that if you are late you can just hop in your car and go. I forced myself to cycle through rain and snow to school last year and it was fun. I feel myself getting fat driving everywhere now, though.

yes you should commute, it will save you plenty of money in loans and you'll still be able to go out and party with your classmates because you are so close.

where on long island are you? if i get into stony brook, i would most likely be commuting from a similar distance, since my bf and i would be living together in between nyc where his job is and stony brook. i've heard rockville center is a good place to live. any input?

I commute almost 40 min. to work and 40 min. back everyday, and it seems like nothing to me. I enjoy my relaxing ride on bart. I would say if it truely is only a 20 min. commute do it...the money it will save will be well worth it IMO.

At my UMDNJ interview, our hosts recommended that we commute no more than 30 minutes each way during the very busy first two years of dental school. Twenty minutes is not bad at all...
