I'll be blowing sh-stuff up one last time. yeah, fireworks are legal in my state. i'll miss that in cali, but hey, i lived there for 15 years without fireworks, so i'll be fine.

firweworks are legal in california right? Well they must be because my sister's school is selling them and I just can't wait to get some. I'll also be blowing sh-t up like the med school rejection letters I got and also the funny ones like NOVAs, New Jersey Med telling me, "we regret to inform you that after careful review of your app, we cannot offer you a seat...blah, blah, blah."

EXCUSE ME, but I turned down the interview offers, if you would have offered me interviews earlier in the cycle I would have gone, but NO...I just think it's so much bullsh-t when med schools can't make your decision letters more personal, afterall, we put our hearts and souls into each med school application, the least they can do (also for that nice app fee we send) is send us a more personalized letter!

anyways I think I just went off there for a little bit, my apologies. This weekend is going to be so awesome. Got the 6th off so I'll have a 4 day weekend to just chill....what are you guys doing?

when i lived there before, fireworks were deathly illegal. i was in the bay area though, so maybe it's different in LA and San Bernidino counties. i did see a fireworks stand in rolling hieghts last week and about peed on myself, because the whole state is a fire hazard. supposedly they only sell 'safe' fireworks, as if there is such a thing. i guess 'safe firework' translates to dumb and dull 'zoom-pop' bottle rockets. i'll be blowing up the big stuff, like the quasi-profesional ones. i can get a tube with 20 mortors for only 15 bucks here. big fun. only the unsafe and insane ones for me!

Welcome TheFish005, so I take it you will be joining us at COMP? Anyhow, good to have you.. btw in CA "Safe" fireworks a leagal in certain counties but nothing that explodes in the air or your typical firecrakers are illegal. Just fountains, spinners, flowers etc are allowed.... but that usually doesn't stop people comming in from South 'o the border.
Well, back to studying anatomy.....yea..right!

can someone tell me what happens during an "osteopathic structural examination"?
I know we are all bound to receive one during orientation.

happy 4th of july..i know its a little late...just wanted to say hi!

BTW...did anyone get anything in the mail recently? I've moved so i'm not sure if ive missed anything....i did get that packet about orientation. that was it so far. Anything more to come?

Jin, I'm not sure what that osteopathic exam is about especially since the 2nd years are performing it on us. I guess it's practice for them.

Fried, I haven't received anything extra in the mail since that orientation packet.

So I just checked on my western email and our class schedules are out. It looks like a typical day is 8AM-5PM. 😱 Is it just me or does that seem a bit difficult. When is there time to study?

Not just you dude not just you! :meanie:

I'm sure not looking foreward to that gross test first day back from thanksgiving break! What a way to spend a holiday. oh well, that's what we signed up for.

Okay all my SDN hommies,

Going to the SMSPP program was probably the best decision I made...not because of the anatomy, biochem, pharm preview, but because of the people I have met and spoken to. Basically it comes down to learning style. Many students are kinesthetic learners and lecture does very little for them. For those of you who learn well in lecture, they are very worth your time. For those of us who can only use lecture to review material...not so good. So the solutions that I have been told are rather simple. Show up to lecture, grab the handouts/notes and go study on your own. Rotate with other students of like mindedness by going to most of the lectures and writing down any KEY or Emphasized points. GO TO THE PROFESSOR'S OFFICE WITH QUESTIONS AFTER YOU HAVE STUDIED...(do this often). As long as you are sincere and diligent in your learning, you will do very well. It seems pretty simple, but several MS2s have done very well with this advice, and that is the point, right?

[Stands on soapbox] Besides we need to remember that we are paying for this so we should do what is necessary for us to get the greatest learning experience from this. [Gets off of soapbox].

Just my .02 and what I've heard from the Very cool MS2s.

See ya'll at orientation,
Ryan

thanks for all that info ryan!

super cool of you...keep sharing!!! 👍

THANKS a bunch Ryan for the advice...although the thought of nOT going to lecture is scary, you gotta do what's best for you in the end and studying/digesting the info can be more helpful I think. Make sense.

So tomorrow morning we can start to register for classes. Does anyone know what health insurance plan y'all are going with? I remember hearing that the Western U health plan sucks so which one should we sign up for?

Any thoughts would be VERY helpful!

Well, I tried to register right now but I had to take out the holds due to the fitness forms and the insurance forms. Even after I completed them it still says there is a hold on them and I can't continue to register. Is anyone else having this problem?

Me too dude.

What the hell...? :scared:

I just called them and they said that it is a bug in their system and their computer people are fixing it. So for now we have to wait awhile until it works again. 👍

we are such stress cases

i love it

33 G's for tuition from each student and they can't get a better computer system???
😱 👎 🙄

The bug in the system is fixed so go register!!! 30.5 units of FUN!!!!

Are you sure? I still have this Emergency contact hold for some reason and I called and they said it's another problem with the computer and they're trying to fix that. Does anyone else have this problem?

I still can't register.

the insurance and fitness form thingies are gettin in the way. 👎

I think I'll wait a few days to let them fix these bugs. Plus, I'm not in so cal for another 2 weeks, so my address is still out of state... anyone think that matters?

I think I will also wait a few days to register since it's not like undergrad where we wouldn't be able to get into the classes..I hated that! The due date is Aug 1st so I'm gonna not stress about it.

Anyone know the best health insurance plan to go with???? 😕

Yea, I just registered for my classes...I was told about the same bug this morning. As for the Emergency contact hold, I had that problem too, but it was a separate computer issue. I think you need to contact the registrar?s office for that Emergency contact hold. Now that I think about it, they could have just cleared my account when I asked them about it this morning because I am already am officially registered as a DO student in the SMSPP.

Bam!!! Time for an avatar rotation...how do like that Aesculapius!!

Ryan summarized up some good advice to take if you know your learning style/environment well enough. Basically, just make the most of your learning time whether it is in class or studying outside of class. This makes learning much more efficient for you and gives you more time to goof off. (just kidding about that last part.. sorta.) You'll learn which lectures to definitely wake up for and which you have "leeway" with.

As far as the osteopathic structural exam goes, this is something that is run by the OMM department and MS-II's to assess all the incoming MS-I's for any structural/anatomical concerns that may come up later during the two years on campus in OMM class. As an example, someone may have certain health conditions which affects what techniques may or may not be practiced on them. It's good practice for the MS-II's and it also gives MS-I's a little exposure to some of the diagnostic skills they will be learning in the next two years. Plus, you get to chat it up with the second years and ask for advice, etc. The whole thing is relatively benign so nothing to worry about. Enjoy life before the classes hit ya!

Hey everyone check out the "Your School Stereotyped Right Here" thread and scroll down... you will be pleasantly (hee....hee....heee) surprised. 😀

-Ryan

Hey everyone, you can register now even if you had all those holds. If you still have that insurance and fitness hold, just complete the forms again and they will disappear this time.

Just on a side note, 30.5 units is just crazy. I've never taken above 18 units in college. 😱

hey folks, anyone know the best cell phone carriers in the so cal area? i currently use cingular, and it works great where i am, but should I switch when I move? or just renew with cingular and get a local number?

I use cingular and I live about half an hour away from Western. It works fine for me so I think you should just stick with cingular. 👍

just a reminder...don't forget to turn in your white coat forms to the bookstore.

i use t-mobile...seems to be ok.

Ryan- glad you're enjoying your class. and thanks for the heads up on any recent snail mail from western.

health insurance...just applied for blue shield...hope it doesn't take too long to clear....itching to register and start school. seeems like western has a lot of buggies in thier computer system.

I got Verizon, and have been very pleased with the service..just come visit campus and walk through some of the buildings...I know some peeps can't get service in the classrooms but I don't know which provider they have or type of cellphone....but I guess we shouldn't be talkin on the phone while in class anyhow 😉

Verizon works perfectly

IT STILL WON'T LET ME REGISTER! 👎

even the tech people have no clue what's up

Really, what exactly is the problem because maybe I can help. For some reason it let me register yesterday morning and I'm in the same boat as you. 😕

every time i click 'signup' for the fitness form or insurance form it says "page cannot be found http 404 error"

doesn't make any SENSE

 No it doesn't make sense. Are you sure it's not a problem with your internet browser? I'm using Internet explorer and it works fine for me. Maybe if you right click on the link and open it in a new window. That's kind of weird because when I clicked it, it worked.

Also, maybe if you use someone else's computer and try, then if it still says error, you know it's not your computer and it's their system.

hey all,

i'll probably be joining you guys at Western this fall (still on some waitlists...). just wondering, what white coat form are you talking about? did you guys get something in the mail? i went on the western website and it said something about a gold foundation pin? what's that about? and do we have to buy our white coats? thanks for the help...

Hey docquaker,
Glad to have you. The white coat form came in the mail along with an orientation booklet around late June which describes everything that's going to happen beginning Aug 4.

Our white coats are free but we have to pay for the nametag. It costs $12. The letter said mail the white coat form back by July 9 which is today. Maybe you should call and ask them what's up if you hadn't received the form or orientation booklet.

hey...
anyone know anything about the bally's fitness plan (all bally's locations, any time, any day)? tried calling COMP student affairs but the chick who has all the info is on vacation. so i tried calling bally's directly...and after 10+ mins of holding 😱 , i finally spoke to someone who clarified that we are signing up for the student plan, which is 3 days/week (mon, wed, fri or tues, thurs, sat or something like that) at only 1 location. if you know different from this, please share. thanks a much!
