I figured I would throw this question out there. About a week ago they sent us a document in our email that said the first payment for our tuition is $14K due on Aug. However, I thought we received our cash on Aug 6. Are they just going to automatically take money from our loans to pay the $14K then?

Asked also about LA fitness for the fitness thingy, said we can only do Bally's, but we can sign up for LA fitness next year, something to do with the contract no going through this year. Hey, that's awesome, but I missed the memo that covered the "9 most essential textbooks." I did, however, receive ample information about the ice cream social and convocation. 🙂

Perhaps, when you have time in between your extensive traveling, you could list the name's (abridged versions if you like) of these so-called most essential texts. I have no intention of spending $1000 on new texts, thus I prefer to get the names now and begin looking on Amazon.

there isn't a significance behind the number 9 it's just that of all the books they ask you to buy he said these 9 were the most helpful and most used...the rest were never or almost never used during ms1.

Okay, according to Fried, we will potentially spend $741. Dr. Don has us down to $681 and LLP tells us that 4/13 are almost never to never used.

Let's say the avg. book costs $57 (741/13) and let's subtract $228 (57*4) from $681...we are looking to spend ~$453 in essential texts. Seeing that LLP got his books at ~75% off I see why he feels so darn good.

I doubt this $453 includes atlases and other useful supplementals - so we will probably be lucky to get out having spent <$500, which sucks, but is better than spending $1000 on books and the like.

I am just trying to pocket all that I can since my budget is a lot tighter than most (I think) due to the wife (full-time student) and two kids (i.e. not having roomates and splitting rent and utilities, etc.) so forgive me for rambling about a few hundred bucks. 😳

Where is my HPSP scholarship when I need it? Doh! That's right, I haven't applied yet.

The bookstore prices are very similar, if not identical, to Amazon prices, and I do believe that Amazon charges tax as well, so no help there.

You can get books used on Amazon. So if you can get them before school, even better.

when i did an online search these 9 came out to about 300 bux used and almost 500 new hence why i've been dancin for the last 5 hours since i got em so cheap

It officially will not be released till mid August but the school arranged to have them drop-shipped directly from the publisher by August 5th. So I don't know if I would bother picking up a biochem book until then.... just for your information.

the 2nd book for 110 is the foundations for osteopathic medicine...i found it on ebay for 101+4 bucks shipping. no tax.

book prices seem the same as the bookstore...might save a buck or two.

Foundations is one book I would hold off on.

The OMM department gives lots and lots of handouts that will do you just fine.

I just had to chime in. You really do not need most of the books on that list! Pretty much all of the professors will give you hand outs, which is where the questions will come from. In addition, many will use powerpoint which you can download onto your laptop.

Of that list, I only bought clinically oriented anatomy and didn't use it that much. These were my essentials:

-Human Anatomy Atlas: Netter
-First Aid for the USMLE
-Microbiology made ridiculously simple (or any other book that uses visual mnemonics...there's actually books called Visual Mnemonics for Microbiology/Pharmacology...or you can make your own silly picture mnemonics)

You will literally get so much stuff in class that you just simply won't have time to read a lot of books. And if you really want that book, just go to that expensive library and borrow it.

And if you can get a hold of the CD full of old exams, lecture notes by the student service, and pharm/micro charts, powerpoint quizzes, OMT powerpoints, you are truly set (your 2nd years should have them).

I'm not sure. I wasn't aware that there were mentors for us.

I have question about the book lists. I did a couple of searches on both ISBN lists and discovered a few things. First, in your list fried, the genetics or biochemistry books aren't there while they are in Lifelong's list. Do you think you missed them or are they not selling those at the bookstore?

Every first year gets assigned a second year 'COMPanion' who is supposed to answer questions, give you hints and help, and generally make sure you don't get lost navigating through your first year.

A good medical dictionary can be a godsend - especially one with a CD rom version which you can load onto your laptop then never have to carry the book. I would wait until you get to school and look at each one to see which one works for you.
