I figured I would throw this question out there. About a week ago they sent us a document in our email that said the first payment for our tuition is $14K due on Aug. However, I thought we received our cash on Aug 6. Are they just going to automatically take money from our loans to pay the $14K then?

no- i hope you have lots of plasma/sperm to donate.....

(yes, they take it out of your loan money.)

Huh? I don't think I got that email...but I don't think it matters because Western will have received the $ by then but won't cut checks to us until the 6th.

I could imagine. I just saw this one episode where Kelso was selling his sperm for $50 each time, and then I saw your comment.

Ryan, the email came along with the parking permit letter and other things. It came from the bursar's office.

Oh....I don't think they sent me one... might be because I am already enrolled as an SMSPP student??? Thanks for the info though, I will check with them tomorrow to make sure I didn't miss anything important.

I'm told that men have to wear a shirt and tie for the white coat ceremony. What is appropriate dress for women guests?

I just got back from Cancun and WOW WAS THAT WELL NEEDED before school starts!!!

off to South Beach in a couple days and then off to vegas a few days before orientation!

livin' it up baby livin' it up!

my guess would be the same as men, i.e. semiformail.

went to the financial aid interview today...Linda was really cool. Also turned in some forms and picked up my parking pass. Asked also about LA fitness for the fitness thingy, said we can only do Bally's, but we can sign up for LA fitness next year, something to do with the contract no going through this year. Everyone i talked to were really cool.

Hey, that's awesome, but I missed the memo that covered the "9 most essential textbooks." I did, however, receive ample information about the ice cream social and convocation. 🙂

Perhaps, when you have time in between your extensive traveling, you could list the name's (abridged versions if you like) of these so-called most essential texts. I have no intention of spending $1000 on new texts, thus I prefer to get the names now and begin looking on Amazon.

Thanks in advance.

yeah I'll like to know which books are the "essentials" because I'll like to start looking for good deals right away. Thanks for the info!

that's around a $60 dollar savings

there isn't a significance behind the number 9 it's just that of all the books they ask you to buy he said these 9 were the most helpful and most used...the rest were never or almost never used during ms1.

Okay, according to Fried, we will potentially spend $741. Dr. Don has us down to $681 and LLP tells us that 4/13 are almost never to never used.

Let's say the avg. book costs $57 (741/13) and let's subtract $228 (57*4) from $681...we are looking to spend ~$453 in essential texts. Seeing that LLP got his books at ~75% off I see why he feels so darn good.

I doubt this $453 includes atlases and other useful supplementals - so we will probably be lucky to get out having spent <$500, which sucks, but is better than spending $1000 on books and the like.

I am just trying to pocket all that I can since my budget is a lot tighter than most (I think) due to the wife (full-time student) and two kids (i.e. not having roomates and splitting rent and utilities, etc.) so forgive me for rambling about a few hundred bucks. 😳

Where is my HPSP scholarship when I need it? Doh! That's right, I haven't applied yet.

3 of these books are medical dictionaries; $55, $50 and $30; so you can cut out some of that too

The bookstore prices are very similar, if not identical, to Amazon prices, and I do believe that Amazon charges tax as well, so no help there.

You can get books used on Amazon. So if you can get them before school, even better.

The infamous 9 ISBN's:
0781725852
063204425x
0781728304
0781731941
0683307398
0683061410
0721694128
0323012132
0397510918

please remember this isn't a recommendation from the adminst. just a tip that i heard over and over again from multiple students that I trust. also in addition to these i was told certain "1st aid", "brs" books are very useful as well.

when i did an online search these 9 came out to about 300 bux used and almost 500 new hence why i've been dancin for the last 5 hours since i got em so cheap

any questions feel free to let me know

p.s. i think i wanna run for somethin
any thoughts?
and don't say treasurer cuz i find the good deals
haha

whoa i just realized somethin! last year said they had like 36 or 37 units so i'm not sure what they dropped from the curriculum but this year won't be exactly like last

Thanks fried and lifelong for listing the ISBNs. So fried, are those all the books that we need for MS-I then or are there more?

Also, your 2nd ISBN doesn't seem to be picked up by Amazon.com. Do you remember which book that was exactly? I'm hoping that these are all the books because then I can buy all of them before school starts.

Just a word to the wise from Dr. Kiik (our Biochem prof.)... There is a new addition of the biochem book coming out with... as he puts it "significant changes." It officially will not be released till mid August but the school arranged to have them drop-shipped directly from the publisher by August 5th. So I don't know if I would bother picking up a biochem book until then.... just for your information.

Thanks for the heads up. Is everyone else planning to buy their books now or are you going to do it at orientation. I was thinking about buying it now but with what Ryan said who knows exactly what books and what edition we need.

i'd say at least pasties.

i'd go for it now
more than likely you're gonna use brs biochem or biochem made ridiculously simple...the text is way too much and more harm than good if you ask me and other 2nd years.

just my 2 cents

for a sec i thought i should regret my great buy but i think i'm still ok

the 2nd book for 110 is the foundations for osteopathic medicine...i found it on ebay for 101+4 bucks shipping. no tax.

book prices seem the same as the bookstore...might save a buck or two.
do the online stores all charge tax?

Foundations is one book I would hold off on.

The OMM department gives lots and lots of handouts that will do you just fine.

hey do you guys know if we can bring someone during orientation week?

For actual class time, I believe that guests are not allowed except in special circumstances do to lack of seating. The official count has us at 215!

I'm too lazy/busy to look up the titles for the ISBN #'s listed, but does anyone know what the titles are?

here's some of them...

color atlas of histology
essential clinical anatomy
color atlas of anatomy: photo study of human body
grants dissector
clinically oriented anatomy
the developing human: clinically oriented embryology
medical microbiology
lippincotts illustrated reviews: biochem
human genetics: prob based
basic and clinical pharmacology
2004 cucurrent medical diagnosis and treatment
dorland's illustrated medical dictionary
surface anatomy: the anatomical basis of clinical examination

Hi everyone,

I just had to chime in. You really do not need most of the books on that list! Pretty much all of the professors will give you hand outs, which is where the questions will come from. In addition, many will use powerpoint which you can download onto your laptop.

Of that list, I only bought clinically oriented anatomy and didn't use it that much. These were my essentials:

-Human Anatomy Atlas: Netter
-First Aid for the USMLE
-Microbiology made ridiculously simple (or any other book that uses visual mnemonics...there's actually books called Visual Mnemonics for Microbiology/Pharmacology...or you can make your own silly picture mnemonics)

You will literally get so much stuff in class that you just simply won't have time to read a lot of books. And if you really want that book, just go to that expensive library and borrow it.

And if you can get a hold of the CD full of old exams, lecture notes by the student service, and pharm/micro charts, powerpoint quizzes, OMT powerpoints, you are truly set (your 2nd years should have them).

Just trying to help you save some $$$,

Arnold

Thanks arnold for the info.

does anyone know if we're suppose to get a second year mentor?

I'm not sure. I wasn't aware that there were mentors for us.

I have question about the book lists. I did a couple of searches on both ISBN lists and discovered a few things. First, in your list fried, the genetics or biochemistry books aren't there while they are in Lifelong's list. Do you think you missed them or are they not selling those at the bookstore?

Also, I noticed that three of the books on fried's list were medical dictionaries. Does anyone know of the importance of getting these books and if they're worth it?

Also, some books on your list, lifelong, are not on fried's list so I'm confused. I'm trying to spend the least but at the same time get the books that are needed or that might be used for good reference but it seems difficult.

Sense said:

Every first year gets assigned a second year 'COMPanion' who is supposed to answer questions, give you hints and help, and generally make sure you don't get lost navigating through your first year.

A good medical dictionary can be a godsend - especially one with a CD rom version which you can load onto your laptop then never have to carry the book. I would wait until you get to school and look at each one to see which one works for you. Or, you can find a classmate (or a friendly second year) who has the CD, and is willing to 'share' it with you. 😉

The only book you should get right off the bat is a Netter's - as some people ordered them online as school started and had to wait until they arrived - like a week after gross started. Don't be one of those people.

my book list is just the books they have under the MS1 section of the bookstore...the guy said that more books are coming new...by no means is my list complete. I just got the netter book for anatomy, that for sure i'll need...haven't had time to do any research on "must have" text books.

Wow that's great info. Thanks.

Fried, thanks for clearing that up. I'll just wait till I get to the store then.

One more quick question. I've heard people talk about a book called first aid for the USMLE. Do you think that we should buy this book also, assuming we are going to take the USMLE? I mean would it help on the COMLEX?

Also, when would we buy it? Now or later on in a year right before we take the test. I've heard people say to buy it now but I can't imagine already beginning to study it for a test that would be in 2 years. So what do you all think. If we were going to buy it, should it be bought now or in a year or so.

I bought the book first year, and used it in the wrong way. You see, I thought that it might help me with my first year classes. It does not go into the depth that each class requires which makes it less useful for your current classes.

Had I the opportunity to do first year over, I would have brought the book with me and gone over it during lecture, filling it in with notes from lecture as the year progressed. By the time you get to second year, the book should be supplemented with your notes, making it a compact source of info for your board prep.

There is a another, systems-based book - Step Up, which others swear by, if they do not like the discipline-based FA. Take a look at both at the bookstore and see which one works for you.

Some people advocate getting FA for the USMLE and COMLEX, and also using OMT Review by Savarese for the OMM portions of the COMLEX. OMT Review covers a lot of OMM and includes 2-3 practice COMLEX exams.

Did ya'll get the email from Prof. Bales? I immediately noticed there were about 273 names on that list
4_6_213.gif

There MUST be some students from other programs doing upper limb at the same time (DPT?)

for some reason, i don't think that list is updated. one of my friends is going to usc med school and his name is still on the list...

Do you guys realize how close we are to the first day of classes!?

😱 😀 👍

Sense, have you moved in the Crest yet?
