for some reason, i don't think that list is updated. one of my friends is going to usc med school and his name is still on the list...

Yea, I think you're right. Thanks

Congrats to everybody entering COMP this Fall!

Just wanted to give you a heads up about a Free Netter's. AMSA (American Medical Student Association) gives a free Netter to new members. I'm not sure what the fees are (I just got a big box of goodies from AMSA that I need to sort through) but once sorted, I'll post. But I hear it's a pretty sweet deal.

ALSO, I think if you join LACMA (LA County Medical Association), you get a free Stedman's Dictionary.

PM me if you have questions.
Enjoy your last few days of vacay!

p/s First Aid 2004 has some new stuff (awesome high yield table in the back) compared to FA 2003 (what I have). So they change slightly every year. But I'd still get FA for first year --- it's good to start being familiar with what is commonly tested on boards.

I'm all in for hold 'em.

School is fast approaching....all this talk about books and boards is already making my head spin.

Are we suppose to attend the orientation aug 4-6?

I just picked up the illest poker set from costco!

let's get this party started 👍

Yes, that is when you are officially "cleared" of any outstanding holds (Sometimes medical clearence get messed up as it did for me).

speaking of party, i'm having an end of ISAC BBQ at my house on saturday. non-ISACers can come i guess (!) so if ya'll want to come PM me so i can give you my address and such.

Hi guys-
I just wanted to say congrats to all of you.....I am excited to meet you all. If you are anything like the ISACers, you guys will have a great class.

I noticed that you have been discussing buying your books, and I just wanted to recommend that you wait and buy your books until school starts. You will be able to get advice on the books that you REALLY need and purchase used copies from the MS2s (you definitely don't need to waste your money on getting all of the recommended books). Last year I felt that I just didn't have enough time to read all of the notes from lecture and the recommended texts (unless it was something that I didn't understand and needed a better explaination).

I hope you are all enjoying your last few days and are all excited to start school, it is really an amazing experience.

-Emily

nice!!! I also have a very nice set of chips (clay style-heavy, just like the casinos) with denominations on them, so if we need some more, I can bring them. How about a poker night on tuesday before orientation, or maybe one of those nights after orientation? any thoughts? I'll be at Western today for my financial aid counselor appt, I'll try to find out as much as I can about books and stuff and post it here. late

Sounds like a great idea..poker and bbq after one of the orientation days sounds great!

KAT-
thanks for the advice.

10 more days till school start!!!!!!! 😀

yeah we should definitely think of organizing some stuff for the evenings; i'll be pretty much free from tuesday onwards

this will be an ideal time to get to know one another cause once school starts it will be hard to socialize so much

Seriously old-school, this guy doesn't mess around. 😎 I play with some old salt dogs who also use clay style...I definitely dig those more than the plastic ones.

Poker or no poker, I am seriously looking forward to hanging out and studying with you guys. I miss school...I miss hanging with people who have a similar vision and similar goals.

Fried owes us a BBQ at his place, but since we are going to "crash" Dr. Jack's party, maybe we'll be partied out (is there such a thing?) by then. 🙂

alright people so I was looking into the orientation booklet and it looks like orientation starts wednesday august 4th-friday august 6th. Which means that we have monday, tuesday (all day) off, wednesday/friday night off. So, who here would like to get together tuesday afternoon (or any of those free nights) for a kickback/poker? I guess the other questions is where? I'm still trying to get my place nice and ready (and it's a little too small 🙁 ) so unfortunately I can't have it at my place YET. I'm very excited that school is about to start soon....but I'll also like to relax and have some fun before the "overload" begins, so any takers? Sense, what's up? ready to do this? JMC man, clay chips are the best, my set cost me like $150, so trust me, they feel really good. I guess all we would really need is some waittresses to serve some drinks and we are all set  hey ladies, any takers? I'm a good tipper 😉 alright let a brother know and hopefully we can get this thing rolling.

I'm all for getting together on Tuesday night. Maybe we can do it at lifelong's place since he has the poker stuff. What do you say lifelong?

I'm pretty excited also that school is finally starting. Did everyone already check out blackboard? Most of our classes have their notes up already.

sounds like a plan, what do you say lifelong? party at your place?

I haven't checked the blackboard yet, but I will. By the way did you guys get the anatomy notes from Dr. Bales? I went to COMP yesterday and picked them up. I got a nice little feeling inside of me because I realized that those were my first set of "med school" notes I was getting my hands on. BRING ON THE KNOWLEDGE!! See you guys soon,

Dr. DOn

Poker sounds good...post up the info. I'll be moving into my new place this week, otherwise i would offer my place. Don't think i'll be ready in time...but for sure next time...it's a house...so plenty of room and a pool/spa in the yard. 😀

I know you ISAC'ers did well, cograts on finishing. 🙂

Need to check out the black board and pick up the notes from Bales. 🙄

Kinda excited about orientation...a warm up to the real thing!

Would of liked to go to JAck's thing but i'm moving today...you guys have fun...have a shot of tequila for me. :luck:

I just checked the blackboard and all i see is the dev. histology notes.

is that all there is? am i missing something here?

Correct me if I am wrong, but this would mean that for MSI's we either go to Bally's or we lose a $100 reimbursement check. Everyone else gets to pick where they workout?

Does this make any sense?

yup that is correct sir...talked with someone at western and Bally's is the only one we can sign up with, but i think we can sign up for 24hr not sure tho. What i really wanted was LA fitness, since I have them already. The person said we can sign up for LA fitness next year, something about not having the contract in time for this year. anyho, hope that helps.,

The way it was for us last year was that we could sign up at Bally's or LA Fitness and pay only $40/yr for the membership. If you chose to go anywhere else, COMP would throw you $100 towards the cost of an outside membership.

If yer cheap - like me, go to the Pomona Y for free.

oh, while I'm at it, I should post up the chain of command to follow. Very, very important to do it this way. If not, they won't listen and they'll be pissed off.

starting from the bottom, going up the ranks:

Academics:

1. Professor teaching the course
2. Course Coordinator
3. Head of Academics: Dr. Kiick

Administration/Student Affairs:

1. Head of Student Affairs: Gisele Tackoor
2. Dean: Dr. Lenz
3. Vice-President: Dr. Charney
4. President: Dr. Pumerantz

Again, whomever you elect to be your class leaders (which I am willing to bet anything will be people from ISAC for the first semester) need to follow this chain of command. Not adhering to this policy will lead to GRAVE consequences..... 🙂

Tell me about it...went to admissions today and it was nice just being there. Home for the next two years solid!

Also toured the YMCA - awesome historical building - definitely old school with that very poor, urban feeling. I can't wait for rotations at County!

Them's my peeps!

so what's up then peeps? are we going to get together tomorrow or what? If anyone is interested, we can meet at school and then maybe go somewhere from there. Email me or PM me and let me know what's up. Take care you all

Somebody is borrowing my set but If my roommate is up for it do you guys still wanna come over here!? Lemme know A.S.A.P. I know Sense lives in my complex but for everyone else i'm in phillips ranch. One more thing, so I was looking over our orientations booklet and for a second i thought I was goin nuts cuz on one page it said aug 4 (1-5 p.m.) we had student processin then on the next page it said on aug 4 (1-5 p.m.) we had OMM structural exams so I called Tonii at student affairs and she freaked out cuz nobody caught this mistake earlier and she said she had to attend to this matter immediately and figure out what went wrong with the schedulin'...i didn't mean to freak her out but i was just curious which page was the right one

Hold'em Smackdown at LLP's pad! $10 buy in?

Can't wait to get elbow to elbow with my fellow brethren.

You know, we may have Monday morning exams and sometimes PM exams too, all in the same day 😱 but at least they can't take away our Monday Night Football -- can they?

How come the Chargers don't get any MNF love? Oh wait, 4-12...nevermind. Better jump on that Philly bandwagon - they are going to be tough.

Considering that we basically strong-armed you into submission, I guess you could buy some time 🙂

It should be BYOB and we can all put in $5 for pizza - easy peasy.

Welcome back! I'll get my parking permit this week at orientation, as well as register for my classes - physical/immunization hold.

So my roomie just said we're supposed to check out the anatomy notes on blackboard already!?
what's that about!?

also what kind of school supplies you guys gettin. i don't know what to get. is it like undergrad? 😕 😕 😕

Hi Kids...I'm back from my vacation in Canada!! I missed y'all and just wanted to say...I can't wait to meet my new classmates (or see tthose of you I've already met) and start medical school...FINALLY!

Only crazy thing for me is that I can't move into my new apartment until Aug 7th....so this'll be a crazy weekend!

It took me a while to catch up on the thread but it was really helpful. Thanks guys for the advice on books etc. See you tomorrow! 😀

I can't wait to finally start either. Hey does anyone think we need the following books:

-Bate's Guide to Physical Examination + History Taking
-Current Medical Diagnosis + treatment 2004

They seem important but I'm not sure if they are. I'm also probably going to buy just one medical dictionary. It's weird that they have us buy 4 of them. Does anyone know which medical dictionary is the best?

Hey there! I am a MSII, and I just wanted to answer your question about those two books. Don't bother buying those books....yet. Eventually you may want to get the Bates book, but that will be later on when you start ICM. I don't think we started ICM until later on in the semester. So far I've been fine without the Bates book. I went to the school library once to read their book (which is a reference book only) and I didn't get much out of it.

Also, as far as the medical dictionaries go, I prefer Stedman's dictionary. I bought the book version of Stedman's and honestly it's been just sitting on my shelf. HOWEVER, I got the disk version of Stedman's from a second year, and it has been my SAVING GRACE! I LOVE IT! I use the computer version every day. So, I highly recommend getting the computer version. Better yet, wait until school starts and get it from your wonderful second years! 😛 I know I'll be giving away as much notes/cd's/old tests as I possibly can to help you guys out! Enjoy your challenging but great year! I'll see you all soon.

Thanks for that great advice caseous. I'll probably get the computer version of Stedman then and hold off on the first two books. 👍

hello all from Western U!!! here I am just checking out some stuff. So is it ok if we meet tonight Lifelong? I agree with JMC, it should be BYOB, eventhough I don't drink, but I can bring the sodas and we should all chip in for pizza or something to eat. So don't worry about not being a good host lifelong, it will all work out. But please let me know as soon as you guys can via call if it's on tonight or not, because the wifey is kind of bugging me about my plans. Besides I've been also feeling some hold em for a while. The other day I had a dream that I pulled a royal flush on the river at the World Poker Tour to win the World Championship 😀 and was handed over a $1,000,000 dollars...then I woke up 🙁 so let me know,

Dr. DOn

Well just give the word lifelong, and I'll come. What time then?

If today isn't good we can make it later on in the week or something.

hello you all, well I'm all done with what I had to do here at Western and on my way home. I guess poker night might not happen tonight afterall....it's all good 🙂 so let's see if we can get together thursday night or even friday night. What do you all say? See you guys tomorrow.

I called my roommate and told him you guys wanted to do the poker night and he said he wouldn't be back in so. cal til late tonight and I really wanted him to join us. So if it's all good with you all...I still wanna have it here just on a later date. I'll be meetin you all tomorrow so we can figure it out then.

I'm so excited!

It's cool. Some other time then when more people can come.

I'm actually kind of nervous for tomorrow. I feel like it's undergrad all over again but this time on a more professional level.

it's all good lifelong, besides the more people the better. See you all tomorrow,
