COMP secondaries, interviews, accepted.

Wow.. this thread has been propagating.. any people who just caught up with this thread should be aware to check out the COMP 2005 and 2006 message threads in the Osteopathic section. (This is the Pre-DO section, but we still check it too heh)

bostongirl22- Places to stay.. I didn't have to stay anywhere, but I think quite a few people stayed overnight at the Claremont Inn (this is one of the recommended places by Western and the drive is relatively close and not affected by traffic for the most part). It's about.. 8-10 minute drive from campus and there is plenty of food around there too I think.

For some more advice on interviews, might want to check out the COMP 2006/2005 threads. If you don't find what you need, go ahead and ask away!

tnt3- Glad to see you're making progress with the apps! Now that I think about it, pre-DO students shouldn't be as scared about asking for LOR's because I think for the majority of DO schools, they prefer DO recs.. so I feel that many of the DO physicians we see have had to go through the same process in the past. Still, it's good to at least speak to the DO a couple of times before asking for a letter..

Melancholy- Thanks for the advice! Do most people just take a cab from the hotel to get to the school? How do you like it there? Are most of the students pretty friendly? Are there other options besides the military and the underserved community programs to help pay tuition? Those are just a few of my many questions, I can't wait to learn more about the school and I'll be there in a week, I can't wait!

Bostongirl22- You'll be here in Pomona pretty soon, no? How long will you be sticking around?

I definitely think you can take a cab from the hotel to school.. did Western send you any information regarding transportation at all? If you can't rent a car or don't want to take a cab yourself, there will probably be other Western students interviewing that are staying at the Claremont Inn and you could split a cab with them. I am sure that the Claremont Inn knows how to get students there too as they have been hosting COMP applicants for a couple of years at least.

One of the main reasons I wanted to go to COMP was because I felt very comfortable at the school during my interview day. Most of the people I spoke to seemed laid-back and friendly (although some folks will be a bit more stressed due to us coming up on crunch time).. students and staff alike. I think the students that give the tours are generally extremely helpful and friendly.. willing to answer any of your questions. If you go around during lunch time, there are plenty of students who are happy to tell their experiences and feelings so far. Personally, I don't feel like I went to my interview or sent in my deposit with any preconceptions about COMP that were dispelled after being here for almost a semester, but I do tend to be realistic about most things... heh.

As far as paying tuition, hopefully someone else can answer this one... I just had to foot a huge check my first day at class.

If you or anyone else has any other questions, you can also e-mail me at [email protected]. Good luck on interviews!

Thanks to everyone who supported me throughout the application process. I decided to apply "Late" and submitted my secondary to COMP in October. Luckily, I got an interview from them right away, and was just notified that I have been accepted!!!!!

:) :) :) I love feeling secure!!

ok...I wasn't going to ask this question but i guess i just need some reassurance...
What do you guys think abt me being accepted at COMP? My overall GPA is 3.22 and Science is 3.0. i graduated from Cornell with a bioengineering degree...MCAT 8,9,9. I have volunteered and done research. Doing research right now in MRI at Cornell medical college. And, I should be getting a LOR from a DO. I just turned in my secondary though...

I know people that made it with similar stats and experiences as yours. In my honest opinion, I think you have a good chance, but turn in your secondary asap. good luck.

I agree with Rickey on this one. You want to expedite that secondary getting to them as well as your LOR ASAP. The later it becomes, it is more a matter of numbers/percentages as there are less seats available, but I should remind you that there are people who get accepted even into spring and a few people here and there at the last minute decide to go to another school instead. There is hope.. just get it all in soon and don't forget thank-you cards! =)

Just got an interview for December 14th, at COMP, and my stats were similar, they were really quick about calling me for an interview and I just got my app in like two weeks ago, good luck you will probably get a call soon. :) :) :) :)

Congrats! Good luck on the interview. The secretary said I should hear from them next week or so. My application was just completed on Thursday. I hope I get an interview sometime during December...

I got an interview at NYCOM on Jan 30th so i'm excited abt that. COMP is still prob my first choice though since it's in Cali.

Yesterday, it was about mid 70's and sunny here at school. I understand it was pretty warm in NY too, but that could sure change in a flash. I should've worn shorts to prevent sweating outside.. heh. :)

Interviewed on 11/27......Accepted on 12/3 (got the letter on 12/6 though).

hey medic,

Congratulations! FYI, if you haven't noticed there is a COMP class of 2006 thread over at the osteopathic MS side.

thanks to everyone for giving the advice for being relaxed at the COMP. my interview was thursday 12/13. my interviewer was very cool, and said explicitly that he wanted to see what kind of person there is behind the numbers on paper...hope to hear good news soon! again, thanks to everyone for easing my anxieties...O

i'm getting paranoid...I still haven't heard from COMP! Should I call them again? I already called twice and they told me i should hear something by this week.

tnt3- when was the last time you gave them a call? I don't think there is any harm in calling to see whether or not "something" has been mailed to you. That may help allay some fears that anything was perhaps lost in the mail..

<big sigh of relief> just got invited for an interview with COMP for the 5th of Feb. I'm so excited and nervous. I was shaking while i was talking to the secretary. I thought it was gonna be a rejection...
OK, now I have to prepare for all of my interviews.

I have a question...

I don't know if i should interview at COMP on the 22, 24, or 25 of January instead of Feb 5th. My dilema is that I already scheduled an interview at NYCOM on the 30th of Jan. and one on 4th of Feb for TUCOM (I'll be in Cali in December but then I'll be back in NY in Jan for work. I don't want to be flying back and forth from Cali to NY that's why i chose the 5th of Feb). My preference right now is for COMP or TUCOM (still not sure yet). Also, I'm afraid that if i interview first with COMP i might be too nervous and inexperienced. On the other hand, i would like to interview asap with COMP since it's rolling admissions. what do you guys think? I'm dreading the interview process...I was never good with interviews...

TNT3,

I can think of a couple of reasons why you should keep the 2/5 interview:

1. It is expensive and time consuming to fly back and forth for one interview 6 business days earlier (the adcom does not meet on weekends). While COMP may be rolling, will six days really justify the effort and cost of flying 6000 miles?

2. If COMP is your top choice, then it would help you and your interview to get at least one interview experience out of the way. When I scheduled my residency interviews, I was definitely not as smooth during my first one. By the third one, I was a pro and already had the answer to the question before they were done. You will do fine. Everyone gets nervous before their first interview.

tnt3- i think ER is right. I would want to stick with that Feb. 5th date. If you are going to your TUCOM interview before your COMP interview, in my personal experience, you will feel a lot more relaxed for the COMP interview after going through the TUCOM panel interview. (My COMP interview experience felt extremely laidback and luckily it was my first one)

ER,
It's actually 2 weeks earlier if i take the jan 22 date instead of the 5th of Feb...but you're probably right...It's economically better to wait til 5th of Feb.
It's just I want to finish the whole application process and have an acceptance (if i do get one) asap.
Yeah...I'll stick with the 5th then...

bump for the eve of new year's eve.

Hey everyone! I got my acceptance letter the day before Christmas! I was psyched, that definitely was the best present of all. Does anyone know how the 1,000 deposit works? Is it 30 days from the day we receive the letter or when it was dated? Because mine was dated the 14th but i got it the 24th.

After going back to find my original acceptance letter (what a nice feeling it was to read this again), it listed my deadline to return my form and a check a month after the date on the letter....

oh yeah, and congratulations on getting in!

Bump for the poor students starting up school in a little over half a day..

first week of class for second semester done.. bump for anyone who has questions regarding COMP!

I have an interview on the 5th, is anyone else going on that date?

Hi everyone, I just got the call today, and am scheduled to interview on the 15th of Feb. I am a little new to the whole interview thing, (My first interview is at Touro on Jan 23rd), and I was wondering if anyone could give me any general advice about the interview process. Oh yeah, and any advice on the school, the curriculum, student life, etc. would be immensely appreciated! :D Thanks guys, hope to hear from you soon!

bump <img src="graemlins/laughy.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughy]" />

I'll be there...i think my interview is at 1:30pm.

johnthestreak,

Hey! How was your interview?!? I hope it went well. I don't know what to think...They didn't give me any indication whatsoever. They were nice people though.

I can't wait to hear back from them...

hey tnt
my interview was kind of intense. they were really asking some general questions like "so, tell me about yourself." i mean how do you answer that?
anyway i hope that they thought that it went well, i thought that it went okay.
i hope to hear from them soon, i really want to go there! i really liked california!!

I was asked the same question. I just talked to Susan Hanson and she said that the letter will be sent out tomorrow. I'm afraid that mine might be a rejection. She wouldn't let me know over the phone what the decision was (eventhough I told her that i was accepted to both NYCOM and TUCOM). I figured she would have told me if it were an aceptance despite the whole policy of not telling over the phone. I don't know. I guess I just have to wait and see. It would be really cool if they do accept me. The interview there was definitely the toughest of the three.

COMP won't tell you over the phone, even if you got in. It's just their policy. They didn't tell me the outcome over the phone, but I got in.

Congrats to all interviewees and acceptees.

Rickey

i got my acceptance via certified mail. can someone please let me know if the deposit needs to be in 2 weeks from the date i signed the certified mail receipt? thx!!! i'm sooo happy to have gotten in!!!

chi718,

Would you share your interview date? I am trying to figure out how long it takes to know the result so maybe I can save airline tickets to future interviews.
Thanks for your help.

chi718--the deposit has to be received 30 days from the date that you received the letter. I guess they get record of when you sign for it via the certified mail (i called them to make sure of this)

guppies- I received the acceptance letter about 2 1/2 weeks after i interviewed (although the letter was dated only a couple days after i had interviewedd).

guppies - i interviewed 1/29, which was a tuesday. they totally gave me the impression that the letters would be sent out by the friday of that week because the committee met on wednesdays. i called the thursday of the following week and they said the letters went out that day (2/7)...i got the letter arrived 2/9. hope that helps...

bostongirl22 - thx for the info. i'll double check with the school too...the letter said i needed to let them know in 2 weeks but i need see if the deposit needs to be in by then too...30 days would be way better cuz i'm still waiting for replys from other programs! thx again!

chi718 and Bostongirl. Thanks for your help. My interview was on 2/7 and I was hoping I don't have to buy tickets for my next interview 2/22 but I think I have to buy it now, quick to save some discount because I will not know the decision until probably later. I also have another interview 2/28 and then a couple in March.

good luck w/ all those interviews guppies! is COMP your first choice? i'm interviewing at UNECOM next week because i'm not for certain i'm going to COMP even though i got in. this is such an expensive process!

Thanks Bostongirl. Maybe they'll give your spot to me. COMP is my very 1st choice.

Interview 2/5; Accepted 2/14

Hope that helps. If you have any specific interview ?s, I can take them.

Congrats to all acceptees, for those yet to get accepted, keep trying and hopefully your patience pays off as mine did

ciao

I got my acceptance letter in the mail today via certified mail. If there is any of you that will need a roomate come August 2002 please let me know.

Thanks

I'm sending my deposit TUCOM tomorrow, despite not hearing back from COMP. I'm so frustrated with Susan Hanson. I'm sorry but I just needed to vent! My interview was back on the 5th and still no news. She had said that my letter would be sent out on the 10th or the 11th so I waited and waited on for it to come. It never came...I faxed her my acceptance letter from other schools today (2 wks after my interview!!!) so I can learn whether or not I had been accepted through the phone but still I did not hear back from her. I left messages on her phone and with her secretary. I understand she's a busy woman but how long does it take to let me know "Yes, you're accepted" or "No, i'm sorry you have been rejected", especially since I have a Feb 22nd deadline for TUCOM. My experience with her has not been good. Her secretary told me that she promised to return my call in an hour. I waited and waited by the phone today and still nothing. I'm sure many of you think of Susan Hanson as a nice woman. I'm just very disappointed that she didn't show me that side of her. I really liked the school and the students and wanted to attend COMP but I just don't have the patience to wait anymore. It's kind of sad...but oh, well...Life goes on...

I finally spoke to Susan and she told me that I have been accepted. I haven't sent out my deposit for TUCOM but I'm still not sure what to do at this point...I'm leaning towards COMP but I don't know...

i got placed as an alternate (which basically means that i got wait listed). that is the worst possible thing that they could've done to me. i really liked the school and definately wanted to go there, but know i have to wait possibly until august (that's what the letter said). nonetheless i accepted their alternate position and i'm still hoping. i just hope that the letter they sent me wasn't just a nice way of saying "we don't want you." i interviewed 2/5 and heard around the 19th.

Wow.. I had no idea this thread was still going here in the Pre-DO forums.. awesome.

EllieR- how did your COMP interview end up going? Are you pretty much set on TUCOM? (denoted by your signature)

johnthestreak- Have faith.. enough of our classmates got in relatively late off the waiting list.. being on the wait list in this case is definitely better than getting rejected. Don't worry.. I had to go through my share of rejection letters in the past. In the end, it only takes one to make you a doctor and I'm glad to have been given that chance (I haven't received multiple acceptance letters to put on my bedroom wall since... college..heh).

tnt3- do you remember who ended up interviewing you? I guess I felt pretty laidback at my interview for some reason.. perhaps I didn't know any better. If they had asked me an open-ended question, I probably would have used that to my advantage to start selling myself to the school.. probably any number of ways to answer that question to your benefit.

I always thought that it was policy not to give decisions over the phone, although I have heard in a few cases here and there (and it seems to be the case in yours finally) that they released decisions verbally.. not bad. Personally, I never saw much of Susan Hanson after playing a little phone tag with her and talking to her a few times the first week of school while taking care of administrative stuff. She does seem like a nice lady, but to me, it is understandable that she is hard to get a hold of as Dean of Admissions. Even though she wasn't there most of the time I called, she did eventually leave messages on my machine to apologize and let me know she got my messages. I understand the dilemma you had with waiting for COMP while having other acceptances on the fritz. COMP didn't seem to give a whole lot of time to decide either, but I think if you have a clear favorite school that you're willing to wait for, put a deposit down somewhere and wait for a spot to open up if you haven't gotten any news yet. I feel that being satisfied with going to the right school benefits someone far more than the initial hit of a $1000 deposit or whatever the amount is.

Bostongirl22- It's just about right for beach weather now.. sunny 70's weather over here. How's Boston looking? :)

Rick- how's life these days for ya?
