I LOVE the L word!! I just started watching this year and have caught up on all the episodes already. Last week's episode was really amazing, this whole Bette/Tina thing is driving me nuts; can't they make it official already?! Also, Jennifer Beals/Bette Porter is my mixed hero, I love how she asked the writers to make Bette bi-racial.


I think there are only 3 episodes left this season, after that I won't know how to spend my Sunday nights...

ahhhh i feel the same way!!! She is totally my biracial hero and i want to look just like her when i grow up hahaha! I actually have a lot of really similar features to her, but i'm nowhere near as pretty. I want to look that hot and perfect in those suits....
Bette and Tina are driving me crazy!!! But i love Jodi and don't want her hurt either, but she'd be a more fun character if they brought back her crazy sexy attitude and had her playing the field.

So yeah, I feel bad that I missed out on the last two pages of posts. Stupid me, I was sleeping. I totally agree w/ what Jolie was saying as far as describing someone else. I just had that happen to me the other day.

Me: "Yeah, you should go see Victoria. She could totally help you out with that."

Him: "Who's Victoria?"

Me: "O she's the one in the office down the hall, second on the right. ... Smiley, always laughin'... " [waiting for signs of recognition on his face] ... " Normal height... I think she's black... kinda big" ...

yeah. awkward. but then he laughed, and my boss busted out laughing. Actually come to think of it they're both black. And they were both all "kinda black?" how can she be "kinda black?" ... to which I replied that she appeared to be mixed. Like a light brown. 🙂

Good times. Anyway, it would have been awkward as hell if I didn't already have a good relationship w/ all these folks. If they were strangers I would have felt odd. But then I'm a kind of BAM there it is type of guy. So I probably woulda said it the same way anyway.

Flaahless, I understand what you're saying about calling people what they want to be called (I liked the "call me Ostrich" bit 🙂 ) ... but that really only works on a one-to-one friendly basis. Not for new people/strangers or acquaintences. And it really only applies to proper names. ... For example, if you meet someone who's a tranny and they say "call me michelle" even though their email address is still [email protected] then by god you call them michelle. but you can't be expected to remember the specific terms that, say, 20 different people want to be defined by.

See, if Tom wants me to call him Theresa cause he's going through this big life change and that's the direction she's now headed in, then cool. It may take some time to get it down pat if I've been calling her "Tom" for a long time, but that's fine. ... I just can't be expected to keep track of the different descriptive terms I'm supposed to use for specific individuals. What if Jane likes to be called "negro" (hates terms with "african") and Timmy likes "black" (God help you if you call him "colored") and Sara likes "colored" (you'd better find a new job if you say "Negro") ?

Holy ****, now I'm gonna get my *** kicked and lose my job. So either everyone just chillax and go with general, BASIC descriptions like black, white, brownish, lighter brownish, darker brown... whatever. ... ... or, if everyone gets to pick their own specific terms then we can only be friends with our own race/gender/sexual orientation. ... ... which means i'm gonna lose all but like 4 friends. 🙁

just as an aside, while talking about how difficult it can be to remember what to call people..

my wife has this friend (we'll call her Mary Alice) who went by her middle name for most of her life. so when I met her, she wanted to be called Alice, and she introduced herself to everyone as Alice. right after I met her (she was starting graduate school) she decided she would rather go by her first name, since that's what was on her student ID that she wore all the time.. so Alice now became Mary, even though she had already introduced herself to everyone as Alice. confusion ensued, so she decided she'd have everyone call her Mary Alice, just to keep it simple. further confusion came, so now she wants to go by "MA".

so the girl I met named Alice is now MA, after several name changes. what do I call her? Alice. that's what I got to know her as, and she doesn't like it when I call her Alice. that stuff's confusing.

and on another unrelated note, flaahless, I'm glad you can be mature and patient with people who call you black, even though you don't like it. I think a lot of other people would overreact and get mad, responding with "What? What did you call me? Are you racist?" This is the reason why so many white people are walking on eggshells.. you don't know how someone's going to react to your innocent mistake. Not to mention just being white is reason for getting your *** kicked for some people.

I'm offended that this thread title has "anti" in it, which is generally perceived to mean a dislike or hatred towards a specific group.

It's like people look for reasons to get offended in this day and age. They're just words, who cares. I've had ethnic insults hurled at me. If it's from friends, I laugh. If it's from strangers, I just walk away. There are bigger things to worry about in the world than a bunch of words. And it's certainly not a topic worth 5 pages of posts while there are other more relivant concerns on the minds of SDN users like if I'll have a hard time obtaining a competitive residency as a DO.

haha okay we'll stop discussing characters/plot, but when you get up to this week's, you'll understand what we mean about it being HOT. I still stand by my desire to look like Bette when i grow up. Because at 23, i sorta still look reeeeally young and nowhere near as professional and put together as she does.

i'll agree with the lighting and makeup, but disagree with the photoshop--i'm not saying that image isn't photoshoped, i'm just saying that she looks like that in every episode and i always want to look like her, haha, not just in still pics. i don't really wear makeup, but i'm sure i'll start eventually, i'm wearing eyeliner that my roommate made me put on in that pic. But yes, it would help to have someone professionally do my hair and makeup every morning and then pick out the best lighting to flatter me. Hmm, i'll look into that if/when i go into private practice...

Hey it's all good. I didn't read 'em. Just freaked out and skipped the post. 🙂 Btw, for those of you that are past season 3: I'm at the part where you're all "o no!! i hope she's gonna be okay!!" ... but unfortunately way back when I was still in Season 1 I wikipediaed (new word?) the characters to see if they were gay/bi in real life or not. testing my gaydar (which is WAY harder when they're acting)... so now i'm fuked cause I know what happens with the character in question. totally ruins it for me. but yeah. great show. ... O, and in real life my gaydar is impeccable. Absolutely fantastic. But with these actressess... I pretty much could only peg Kate Monnig (shane) and whats-her-face... the one that plays Alice. ...

I love Laura. don't tell me nothin. i dont' want to know. i'm just sayin i love her cause she's the least fuked up chic on that show. shane was always my fav, even when she said that all conservatives are stupid. that is, until she *SMALL PLOT SPOILER STOP READING* actually cheated on Carmen. that **** ain't right. you can be as gay/bi/les/tranny as you want, but if you're gonna be monogamous then by God you better not cheat * OKAY YOU CAN READ AGAIN NOW* so I love the show, and laura is currently on top for StealthNerd's favorite characters. Jenny, as always, is at the bottom. cause sweet God in heaven that is one fuked up crazy b*tch. O, and I like that new chic Moira (max). 'cept of course for the aforementioned behavior that I'm not a fan of. ... Ya'll should see my wife when she occasionally watches episodes w/ me. O, and AAJ: like someone already said, the magic of movie/TV editing can not be underestimated. try running into these ppl at 7-11 some morning at 8 am when they're getting coffee. they'll look just like the rest of us. but that's a great photo either way.

speaking of which... don't those of you that post photos (or real names) feel odd? I mean, that's the point of these anonymous boards. to stay anonymous. ... I'm SURE I've said some **** on these boards that I wouldn't say to or around some admissions folks, or, now that I'm accepted, any folks in Admin... professors... etc. yet we all know that those exact people cruise these boards. hell, the lady at Gtown (sullivan, cool lady) specifically referenced crap that she read on these boards. ... ... you can bet your sweet as$ I plan on staying anonymous. I don't know if I'd ever want to link "real world me" to "SDN me". 'cept to close friends obviously.

Oh yeah no i make sure that i've never said anything on the boards that i wouldn't want people to see, and with my profile, i'm not really anonymous at all, so what can you do? That made me really mad at shane too because i LOVE carmen. My favorite character in season 3 was Alice because she was so crazy. And i HATE jenny more than anything. Me and my best friend get so mad whenever she gets on the screen.
