Given how fluid the situation is and how cases have been climbing in particular hotspots, what are the chances that other schools will start canceling second look events (for March + April) ?

My guess is schools in larger metro areas may start to cancel second look weekends (Chicago, LA, NYC, Boston) while those that are in smaller areas may not but depending on how widespread it becomes, this could change.

edit: this clearly changed. I foresee all second looks being canceled

My infectious disease colleague says "use lots of hand sanitizer, cough into your arm, avoid shaking hands and try not to touch your nose or mouth. And if you don't have any underlying risk conditions, you're really not at risk. Did you get your flu shot?"

Does anyone know how likely airlines are to refund tickets in case of a cancellation? The Mt. Sinai email mentioned it but I'm not sure if I should continue booking tickets.

I have no idea!

You may want to weigh the pros and cons including the cost of the trip, the refund policies the airlines have in place if you have to cancel (if you are traveling by air), and whether you are at high risk (due to being immunocompromised, or having an underlying chronic condition) or if you live with anyone over 60 or who has health issues that could place them at high risk if they contracted the virus. This is not going away in the next 8 weeks and you will be at risk whether you go or not unless you choose to isolate yourself which may or may not be feasible given your responsibilities and institutional responses to the on-going outbreak.

Highly dependent on the airline i imagine.
Southwest you’d have no problem. Otherwise, Im not sure.

I got a notice from American saying if you cancelled during a 2 week period in march they would waive the fee. So April would be a $200 donation. If you can prove you are sick, email them your Doctors info, they will contact them and most likely waive the fee. They don't want you on the flight either. I did this this past January when my wife had a stomach virus and could not fly. When they initially refused to waive the fee, I said "Fine. I'll just bring her on the plane and ask the Pilot for a barf bag". They became a little more accommodating after that.

Until there is more certainty about the epidemiology and better sensitivity of detection, I'm expecting things to be downsized, cancelled, or postponed. Frankly I'm surprised that some schools haven't pushed more online connections as second-look programming.

Schools should be looking into that even without a virus.

I know. I tried but others wouldn't join in to collaborate. Colleges do virtual tours now, and I'm sure summer orientations for freshmen will also be pushed to more online programming.

Of course, if sick people stayed home, or anyone suspected of being exposed properly self-quarantined, you probably won't have many changes other than larger tubs of hand sanitizer and longer breaks for washing hands after meals and receptions.

Where did you see this? I didn’t get any emails from them yet 🙁

Probably just saying that due to a med school faculty member that now has the corona.

ITS ALL A HOAX BY THE LIBERAL LEFTIST MEDIA!!
LOCK IT UP!! LOCK IT UP!! LOCK IT UP!!

(This would almost be funny if the hoax story wasnt being pushed last week)

I don’t want this thread to get derailed with political stuff, but what was actually said was that the plague level hysteria was a hoax, not the virus itself.
