When we moved to NY, we took an upstairs duplex. We didn't realize the occupants below us were the daughter and grandchildren to the landlord. There were 3 kids, all named after motorcycles. The mother, at nearly 400 pounds, wandered around with the curtains open in her bra and underwear. She would sit on the exterior front steps in a T-shirt and underwear. The T-shirt did not cover the underwear. Her kids were neglected and constant physical fights between all of them.
Several times I or hubby would come home to police, who felt the need to question and challenge us. In our ethnically diverse neighborhood, the middle child hung a confederate flag in the front window. We had dogs who had to be walked and I would get comments from our neighbors. They would slide stuff under our personal front door to tease the dogs (like pipe cleaners and such...just disruptive junk.) One night, while I was out walking the dogs in 6" of snow and a howling wind, they locked the shared front door and jammed a pen cap stem into the lock and twisted it off. Hubby was out of town coming back via the airport. I didn't have a phone, money, etc. I sat in a bank ATM foyer (7 blocks away) with 2 dogs for over 4 hours till he got home and called the landlord. Then, 2 weeks after we bought my NEW car, my first new car, her kids went 'sledding' down the exterior stairs and LANDED on the hood of my car. We reported it, but it was our word against theirs. We gave up. $800 in damage. Then it snowed like crazy (several feet) while hubby was out of town. He was in the habit of snow shoveling out her vehicle as well. I couldn't be bothered, so I shoveled the entire sidewalk and shoveled my car out. She threw a hissy fit about how unneighborly I was (she had a teen ager and a tween living with her, plus her older daughter was home from college.)
Final straw was a few weeks later. Hubby was on another trip. I leave the stereo on all the time. Hubby flew out on a Thursday, and the stereo was on. 10 days later he came back, flight delayed, bags lost, home just after midnight. Stereo had been on at the same volume for all those days. At 4am she was pounding on our door screaming about all our ruckus and noise making...and how we better turn that d*#! stereo down before she came in there gave us what for and threw it out the window.
That was it. We arranged to move out the following week (I took vacation and packed us completly up.) We moved 6 car loads of stuff without them realizing what was up. Then the moving truch came on a Saturday, and the woman from downstairs came out screaming at us that we couldn't do this. That they would sue us and on and on. Hubby said he would discuss it with her mother, the landlord. She screamed that the landlord had given it to her brother and she was her brother's representative, and therefor we would discuss it with her (never understood the logic.) We refused, and finished moving.
When it was all said and done, because of state laws, they couldn't hold us to a lease that we didn't sign with the 'new' owners. And they had to return the deposit. they guy who came in for repairs and such during inspection was amazed at how great the house is. The original landlord asked why we were moving and we laid it on the line in detail, and she tried to deny some of it, but the repair guy had just redone a ton of stuff downstairs and confrimed that it was as bad as we said. Oh, and when they redid the entire place, including poly-ing the floors, they lived in a hotel. No one mentioned it to us....the off gasing made us both sick, and it damaged some of the finishes on our furniture and such. Really was a pretty unhappy place.
