I am having the most difficult time deciding! Colorado state or University of Tennessee?!

CSU is more established with research, but U. Tenn is just getting started and the university has an MD program so better chances to collaborate with MDs and PhDs. U Tenn has all of those new facilities & does amazing stuff with exotics more frequently than CSU. Knoxville is also a little cheaper than Ft Collins. But quality of life appears to be better in Ft. Collins. CSU is higher ranking right now, but once U Tenn is done with all of their updates, their facilities will be the BEST!

Can anybody else comment on these two schools? Anything bad to say about either one??

I cannot express how much I hate using rankings as a reason to choose a school when there are only ~30 schools that are in the rankings.

If the schools both seem like they would be a good fit, I would go to the cheaper one. I'm sure a lot of other people here would recommend the same.

I don't know about UTK, but CSU's OOS tuition is pretty steep....

Edit: Also agree that rankings aren't the way to go about deciding. You'll get a quality education from both programs.

Rankings are BS. There is no real systematic way to rank the schools, so it is just personal opinion of those being surveyed.

You should attend the school you feel you will be the happiest at. You will be a respected DVM when you graduate from either school. So, what would make you happiest? Forget the numbers and go with your gut.

You will make great friends and have awesome opportunities at both schools. There is no wrong choice.

Jam you give the best advice 🙂 I'm deciding between UTK and Auburn and the finances are my biggest hurdle to figure out and decide where I should go..I'm trying to let the finances go and realize that huge debt is huge debt regardless lol. I'm praying a lot and thinking a lot and trying to figure out where I would WANT to be..I think I'd be happy at either school but where would be best? I'm very blessed to have these options! so I'm trying to stay positive 🙂

Just so you are aware, U Tenn medical school is located on the Memphis campus, 6 hours away from Knoxville. There will still be PhD students in Knoxville, but all the MD students will be in Memphis.

Awww, well I just try to tell people what I would want to hear. Debt is a HUGE factor to consider. I realize that, but if the numbers are close, then you should go where you want. Its a blessing, yet a curse, to have to make the decision. But like I said before, there really isn't a right or wrong answer. Close your eyes and picture yourself on the first day of school at both places. Where do you immediately feel more at ease, more relaxed at the decision? It is that place to which you should say yes.

TN has a class size of 85 while CSU has a class size of about 138. Is it worse or better to have a larger class. I also feel like, if CSU could fit 500 people in a class they would. Do you guys think thats true? I know all of the schools are having financial issues, but does anybody know if one has less than the other. The fact that UTK just sunk 30+ million $ into the new facilities suggests they are pretty strong financially..... Still, CSU seems to have pretty strong faculty members (which I say just because they develop the 3D Anat program that other schools use and they developed artificial tissue that bleeds...)

I like smaller class sizes personally.

I find that there a lot of people at UTK that was very strong faculty members. Dr. Schumacher (exotics) has a chapter or 2 in Mader's Reptile Medicine. Dr. Kirk (medicine/nutrition) pretty much writes or co-writes every nutrition book I've ever seen. Dr. Bartges (Medicine) is well known for urology (and is on VIN). I could go on. Essentially, if you are faculty in a vet school, you likely decent to strong. There are always exceptions

Dr. Schumacher = 😍

But seriously, dyachei is right. Smaller classes equal more personal relationships with professors, more opportunities, etc. UTK has research, but the students, the education come first, the clients second, and then the research. You'll be hard-pressed to find another vet school that cares for its students like UTK dos.

I agree. And if you are interested in research, there is a summer program at UT every year where students are matched up with various research projects that the faculty are conducting. The projects vary year to year, but they cover large and small animals with a wide variety of topics. I know several people who have done it and found it very rewarding.
