For someone who did a Cyto fellowship I would recommend everyone to bust their asses in residency to see as many cases as you can so you don’t have to do one extra year of fellowship. Look at a lot and hopefully try to get feedback from cases if you can. During your rotation look at as much as you can and sit at signout with the attending for ALL the cases of you can. Some places don’t do this. This is for those ppl who don’t want to do Cyto.

if you really want to do a Cyto fellowship go for it. It can get you a job as groups wantCyto fellowship trained ppl (aka they don’t want totake the risk of hiring someone who is not Cyto trained and have to train them at WORK). Why would you hire someone with 2 months of rotation experience vs someone who did a one year fellowship at a strong institution. Just remember people will come to you for cyto questions.

Cyto May be a dying field but employers still are loooking for fellowship trained ppl. Just look at Pathoutlines. Not sure why Webb doesn’t understand this? Hell, some places look for surgpath trained ppl because they want CONFIDENT junior pathologists, not someone who will waste their time to have the other pathologists look at ALL their cases. The head of one group mentioned that this happened in her group. The guy was showing all his cases and asking, “What’s this?”

I get it. Cyto doesn’t make money but it can be a ticket for some people to get a job in a tight job market. Do it if you like it. If not, learn it as best as you can in residency.

That's a lot of data when you are looking for someone to agree with you.
